Oxfam is one of the best charities that operates in the UK, because as well as raising money to ease the problems brought about by world capitalism, particularly in Africa, they also do some serious campaigning.

In particular, in recent months, Oxfam have revealed that (assuming capitalism continues) tens of millions of babies and children will die in Africa in the next 30 years or so, and that 80% of government aid goes missing through corruption. Both of these points appeared as the main front page headlines of a free UK newspaper, the Metro. [The Metro is owned by the same people as the Daily Mail, but due to it being a new newspaper, it has attracted a new bunch of journalists and editorial staff that enable it to be very radical at times.]

Oxfam sells “Divine” fair trade hot chocolate, which tastes particularly good and is not sold at the rip-off price that some supermarkets charge for fair trade products to put working class people off buying them and encouraging them to compromise their principles by buying non-fair trade products. As well as giving farmers in Ghana a decent wage for their work (with them having shares in the cooperative that produces the hot chocolate so that the farmers get additional money when the cooperative does well) and raising money for Oxfam, there are Christian Aid and Comic Relief logos on the boxes indicating that some of the proceeds go to those charities – and obviously not the tiny amounts of money donated by Flora for Red Nose Day 2004 in an exercise of blatant commercial exploitation of that charity.
