Been a long time since I was here. At least 8 years. I've just retired so I now
have time to do things I want to do.

For those interested, the first part of my email address is my Amateur Radio
Call Sign. I have been a ham for five years now, and get on it every chance I
get.

Not a lot of activity in this group, but I will keep and eye out.

Take care

I use Faceebook and there are a few Overend Groups on there but not one that
deals just with the family tree. Until now that is, as I've just created
one.

It takes a while before facebook picks it up in its search but if you are
logged into Facebook then this link (hopefully) should work:

I was wondering how many of us are on Facebook and if anyone would be
willing to create a Facebook page for us to share our family pictures?

My husband's family has one and the area from where they come from in
Newfoundland has one and we have beenable to share a great deal of photo
history.

Is anyone willing to do this if we make it?

A few weeks back I uploaded a family group shot from around 1906 of Charlotte
Overend, daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Smith, with various New Zealand
descendants and relatives. After circulating this picture among the oldest
Overend descendants here in NZ and in Australia all but five of those in the
group have been identified.

It appears that the gentleman in the centre back row is James, Charlotte's older
brother, who would have been in his early 50s at the time. As this seems to be
the only known picture of James I've uploaded an enlarged detail, in the hope
that it'll be of interest.

Best Regards,
Joe Wylie

My apologies - it appears that the uploaded picture of what was widely believed
to be the young Charlotte Overend is not her, and is likely to be one of her
half-siblings. Thanks to information from the excellent
http://canterburyphotography.blogspot.com/ it's been possible to establish that
Charlotte Overend would have been at least 20 years old when that picture was
taken. Plainly it's of a rather younger woman. Picture deleted, apologies for my
error.

Hi George,

Many thanks for that. While I'd been able to glean a certain amount of
information from NZ BMD and cemetery records, much of what you've provided is
new to me. Even after more than a century and a half it's sad to discover the
tragic start - the deaths of the twin infant girls - to the resilient Fagan
family's saga.

While you most likely have this info, I have a death date for Robert Henry Fagan
of 25/6/1937. For his spouse Ellen Mary Carney I have a birth year of 1882, with
her death in 1969.

Where my searches have given different dates:
For Amy Ada I have a death date of 6/11/1935 in Dunedin, with 1898 as the year
of her spouse James King's death.

For Alice Agnes, the now online BMD records have an Alice Agnes Thomas reaching
the age of 93, with a death year of 1967.

I'll have to check further as to whether there may be more than one Alice Agnes
- stranger things have happened. In the meantime, thanks again for your helpful
reply.

Best wishes,
Joe Wylie

Hi hystricomorph

Im married to one of the Fagans that desended from Fanny and Michael (Joy the
Sister of Niell who also replyed) before he died I spent some time putting the
information their Dad had gathered on the family tree into a database my own
father had created on his family and have a pretty extensive setails of Fannies
desendants in NZ.

You asked about the twin daughters Martha and Mary who were born in 1855.
they weren't on the Robert Small because both had died. Mary on the same day she
was born (9th Feb 1855) and Martha two days after that on the 11 Feb 1855.

The Robert Small sailed from London on the 7th Oct 1759 and arrived in NZ on the
29th Jan 1860.

Michael and Fanny went on to have 5 more children once in NZ.
Robert Henry (7/Nov/1867) - married Ellen Margaret Carney on 10/May/1899
Amy Ada (25/June/1869 - 1898) - married James King on 13/June/1886
Walter Herbert (12/July/1871 - 9/Dec/1951) - married Emma Elizabeth Campbell -
1906
Sarah Bridget (13/Nov/1872 - 1931) - married William Eagle on 13/May/1891
Alice Agnes (9/Oct/1874 - 1911) - married Joseph Thomas Hutt on 4/Feb/1891

Walter Herbert also married a Margret Rapley on 30/July/1902

Both Niell and my Wife Joy are decendants of Thomas Edward

Hi Neil,

Many thanks for that, it's certainly given some extra detail to what information
I've been able
to gather so far. Apart from attempting to compile a family tree for my Overend
line in NZ I'm
very interested in the circumstances of assisted immigrants to New Zealand at
the time of
Fanny and Michael's arrival. For example, how attractive was the prospect of
starting a new
life on the opposite side of the globe to those who, in many cases, might never
have left their
native county. The human circumstances, such as Fanny, her husband, her brother
Nathan
and his wife, plus three recorded children travelling as a family group, has
been a marvellous
discovery for me.

Very much appreciate your help on this. While I've been able to trace some of
Michael and
Fanny Fagan's immediate descendants through local BDM and cemetery records I'll
certainly
investigate the link you provided.

Once again, many thanks and best wishes,

Joe Wylie

Hi

I am a great great grandson of Michael Fagan and Fanny Overend. Unfortunately
I have only a sketchy knowledge of family history but did come across some
relevant data some years ago.

With regard to the family of Michael and Fanny there is this information which I
copied from the Overend website

Michael Fagan

· Born: 17 Sep 1831, Dublin, Ireland

· Married: 28 Aug 1853, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England

· Died: 23 Aug 1902, Alfred Forest, Springburn, New Zealand

· Buried: 27 Aug 1902, Alfred Forest, Springburn, New Zealand

Michael married Fanny Overend, daughter of Robert Overend and Sarah Curtis, on
28 Aug 1853 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. (Fanny Overend was born on 14 Oct
1834 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England, christened on 26 Dec 1834 in Dewsbury,
Yorkshire, England, died on 16 Jan 1912 in Springburn, New Zealand and was
buried in Alfred Forest, Springburn, New Zealand.)

Fanny Overend

· Born: 14 Oct 1834, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England

· Christened: 26 Dec 1834, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England

· Married: 28 Aug 1853, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England

· Died: 16 Jan 1912, Springburn, New Zealand

· Buried: Alfred Forest, Springburn, New Zealand

Fanny married Michael Fagan on 28 Aug 1853 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England.
(Michael Fagan was born on 17 Sep 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, died on 23 Aug 1902
in Alfred Forest, Springburn, New Zealand and was buried on 27 Aug 1902 in
Alfred Forest, Springburn, New Zealand.)

They had a large family in New Zealand with many descendents in the Canterbury
area, later scattered across NZ & Australia. This link lists some of them from
the LDS database. It includes Mary & Martha who would appear to have died at
birth. The record is clearly wrong as to the place of birth as the family did
not emigrate until 1859.

Dear Joe W

Sorry that I cannot help on this score.

I was married into the Overend family of Earlsheaton, Dewsbury. West Yorks.

The only thing I find which is of a similarity is the fact that one of my
deceased husband's great great great grandfathers was called Fagin Overend.

However I will put this letter on my file.

Thank you.

Great to hear from the group and wondering if anyone has any connection with
the Overend's linked to Orton Westmorland
I have a tree going back to John Overend & Isabelle Windar on one side and
Elizabeth Overend and Robert Thornborough on the other side
Lots of intermarriages with Thornborough ( various spellings ) and Bowness
My direct line from Thomas circa 1787 & Mary Sanderson were in Whitby from early
1800's and the line follows from there

My name is Joe Wylie. I'm in Christchurch New Zealand, and currently researching

While I'm late to the party with this thread, thank you Loretta for starting it,

great help in finding and confirming some elusive connections. Thanks specially
to Harry

invaluable. If
there's anything I can do by way of passing on relevant information please let

born 1860 in Christchurch, sister of James Overend who arrived in NZ in January
1860
with parents Nathan and Elizabeth née Smith.

While I'm late to the party with this thread, thank you Loretta for starting it,
as it's been a
great help in finding and confirming some elusive connections. Thanks specially
to Harry
Overend for this great forum, combing through the posts here has been
invaluable. If
there's anything I can do by way of passing on relevant information please let
me know.

Hi Harry,

How nice to get an email from you.

We have moved to an apt. in a retirement community about 20 miles from
where our house was, we are still in Pennsylvania. My new mailing
address is: 433. S. Kinzer Ave. 47 VSA in New Holland, PA 17557.

I am replying to you on my with my old email address but it will be
canceled on Mon.

Also, we do live in another state from Dec. thru March every year and
that address is: P. O. Box 744 in Santa Teresa, New Mexico 88008-0744.

I am looking out at snow falling, nice to see but challenging to drive
in. Fortunately, we will not be going out until morning for church and,
hopefully, by that time the roads will be good.

I do hope you are well.

With trying to sell our house, a challenge in this economy, and all the
sorting and packing we have been extremely busy the past several months
so the genealogy has had to take a backseat to other things but I hope
to get back to it soon.

Take care,

Regards,

Mary Painter

   Hi all,
hoping someone can help me with a dilemma.
Some time back I printed up the details from your website with all the
   generations.
For Generation 8, you have John Overend born 12th Feb 1758, Farnhill,
   Kildwick.
And that he married Margaret Atkinson on the 12 Feb. 1782.

Now my dilemma is his wife.

This is what I have found:
Kildwick parish Registers - marriages - Grooms index.

John Overend of Sutton, woolcomber, bachelor to Margaret Wilson, minor, on
   the 12th Feb, 1782.
This is also on the IGI.

John Overend of Farnhill to Mary Wilson of Farnhill, on the 1st, March,
   1802.

The IGI has an LDS member contribution for the Marriage to Margaret Atkinson
in 1788, and his birth as 1763. I do not trust the contributions.

In the Brides index - the only Margaret Atkinsons mentioned as marrying are:
Margaret Atkinson of Silsden, spinster, to William Lowcock of Silsden,
   husbandman, wid, 3/10/1785
   and
Margaret Atkinson of Skipton to Jonas Gill in 1789.

Ok, now the children of John Overend and Margaret? that were baptised at
   Kildwick state
that the father (for most of the baptisms) is a woolcomber from Sutton,
   Kildwick.

However, for the children that were baptised for John Overend and Mary
Wilson, it states they are from Farnhill.

Should my line, Thomas Overend, born 4th July 1793, bp. 6th Oct 1793, son of
John and Margaret, woolcomber, of Sutton, be the child of Margaret Wilson,
as I can find nothing that verifies it is Margaret Atkinson.

   Driving me crazy,

   regards
   Margaret

Hi MC,

Sorry for the delay in replying, blame the day-job and I wanted to revisit
the census and BMD data and look at Matthew and Mary Ann's marriage in the
Calverley records. As well as using the Calverley church some Overends used
the parish churches in Leeds or Bradford, and later Farsley got its own
parish church. There was also an active Baptist church for many years in
Farsley

There were several Samuel Overends of similar age, two in Farsley and I had
not been sure which married Mary Harper but I feel certain you are correct.
Mary Ann was christened in Bradford but there was Elizabeth Harper Overend
entered in the Farsley Baptist records in 1828 who may have been a sibling
for William and Mary Ann. I could not find her in any census records so she
must have died before 1841.

I looked at the marriage of Matthew and Mary Ann on 1st April 1839 at
Calverley. Matthew is listed as 22, bachelor, a clothier, and signed his
name. Mary Ann is listed as 20, a spinster, and made her mark. Both were
resident in Farsley which is not much help. Their father John and Samuel are
both listed as clothiers which was the most common occupation in the area at
that time. The witnesses were William Overend, ?Mary Ann's brother, and
David Threapleton. (Both signed their names.) There is no birth or baptism
record for Matthew Overend but the name of the witness and that there were
not many other John's having children in the area at that time led me to
John Overend and Susanna Threapleton and there is a gap in their large
family at the time Matthew was born.

> My grandmother was Susannah Overend who married Joseph Henry

>
> How did you discover the marriage of John Overend 1791-1872 and
> Susannah Threapleton? I haven't been able to locate it. There are a
> lot of Threapleton marriages in the Calverly registers at the

> Yes , you are quite right about Daniel (1841) having three

Do you think this is correct? I was unable to find Susannah and Joseph Henry
Rawnsley in 1901 and wondered where they got to.

My grandfather was James Overend, born in Bramley in 1874. His parents were
James Overend and Martha Farrar, married at Calvereley. James Overend senior
was christened at Calverley in 1832 but the parish register records that he
was born in 1830. James' parents were Nathan Overend born about 1800 and
Elizabeth Harrison who lived in Stanningley with their large family. By 1851
Nathan has remarried to a widow Martha Parker and they have one child
together. On the certificate for his second marriage Nathan gave his
father's name as Nathan.

Best wishes,

Gillian

Here is what I have about John and Susanna with Matthew included:

Hi Gillian,
My grandmother was Susannah Overend who married Joseph Henry Rawnsley
on 14 October 1891. Susannah was the oldest child of Daniel Overend
and Grace Ann Petty. One of Susannah's brothers was called Joseph
Harper Overend, The name Harper comes from his great grandmother,
Mary Harper who married Samuel Overend on 14 October 1811.

How did you discover the marriage of John Overend 1791-1872 and
Susannah Threapleton? I haven't been able to locate it. There are a
lot of Threapleton marriages in the Calverly registers at the
beginning of the 19th century but I haven't found a reference to a
Susannah.
Yes , you are quite right about Daniel (1841) having three children.
I wonder if there were others that we haven't yet found.

Dear MC,

My name is Gillian Overend and I descend from Overends of Farsley. I live in
Bradford, Yorkshire, not too many miles away from Farsley. Perhaps you would
like to introduce yourself to the group a bit more.

I have never found a birth or baptism record for Matthew but I believe his
parents were John Overend 1791-1872 and Susanna Threapleton. Mary Ann
Overend's parents were Samuel Overend and Mary (surname unknown).

I have found 3 children for Matthew and Mary Ann, a daughter Eliza or
Elizabeth, born 1839 or 1840, and 2 sons, Daniel born about 1841 and
Frederick born about 1852. Is this correct?

Gillian

I have a family photograph of Matthew Overend who married Mary Ann nee
Overend. He was born about 1817. They lived in Turner House (1851
Census) and in 1871 at 25, Red Lane, Farsley. He died in 1900. I think
his father's name was John but would appreciate help in tracing his
ancestors.
Thanks in anticipation.
