Hi Listmates,
I have just thought of a very good man that we need on our new Elba site. Mr. Marion Brunson would be a very valued member to us as he has written some outstanding books on our Area, and is a life long native of Elba. Marvin, you might call on him and check to see if he uses the computer and if he would like to join. The more good members that we have the more information we will be able to receive and enjoy.

Yea, Later, when I get time, I'll write about 1990 Flood and also the one in 1975, the one one that flooded our house in Riverview. I'll try to talk about my stint as sheriff in 1979 also!
Later,

Thanks for the intro Marvin, please feel free to send email to our Elba site whenever you want to ask a question or tell a story about Elba. I know that you worked with Emergency services during the recent floods of Elba. You might have some stories from those to share with us. If you would like to see our past messages just click on messages on the left upper side of our home page and they will come up and you can catch up on them.

My name is Marvin and I came to Elba visiting in 1963 and wound up staying there; however, I had been coming to Elba for quite some years prior to 1963. My home was in Chatom, Alabama, but I use to come visit relatives in Elba...My father's sister lived in Elba and we use to come spend a week at the time with them. After coming to Elba in 1963, I married a girl from Elba and have been here ever since except for about three years when I moved, along with my family, to Montogomery, AL. I worked for Dorsey Trailers and my job required me to move to the capitol city for a while. I came back to Elba, but sad to sa, my family stayed in Montgomery. This is home now, even more than Chatom, I guress I be here until I die!

Today (July, 31, 2005) My bride Dot Gatlin Merritt and I have spent most of the day on the telephone trying to contact members for our "Our Ole Elba Tales" site. So far we have had a few that wants to join and a few that refused. Please contact anyone that has an Interest (either past or present) and let them know of our site and either send them a copy of your invite or refer them to us at dottiepooh@... and we will supply them with a copy of the invite. We would like to have as many as the "Tales of Samson"
Back in the early 1900's there was a shooting in Elba that involved my Dot's family. If you know of anything of this event please let us know, it goes like this.
One New Year's eve, a young man named Gapper Gatlin was in Elba to celebrate. During the night Gapper became drunk and got out of line, when the police went to arrest him he became combative and was shot in the foot by an Elba police officer. The father of this man was also celebration New Year's at home and was all drunked up. When Mr. Joel Gatlin heard that his boy had been shot Joel got his gun and went out to get even. Well!! it seems as when he found the police things didn't work out for Joel because he lost the gun fight and is today buried in Woodland Grove Cemetery. John or Rudolph you may know of this event if so please reply.
Now that I have finished blowing my horn on the "Tales of Samson" I will talk about Elba. When I was in High school at Samson and on the Samson Football team we went to Elba one Friday night to play. Elba had not been beaten that year and we had a very good team that "We" believed could beat them. The night was very cold and damp. Our coach had given us high socks to wear and as the game warmed up, we found that the socks were falling down around our ankles which was very uncomfortable. Well we played as best as we could, but needless to say we LOST. We never wore high socks again. Eldon L. Merritt
Yep!! is seems as if the old Flood Lincoln was a bad one, Elba had a home guard during the Civil War that was made up of young boys and old men, it seems as if I and everyone old enough in Samson knew one of the boys who served in the Home Guard, it is said that an old Gentleman from near the Coffee and Geneva County line named Mr. George Quiller, George was one of the most colorful men that I have ever known. The job of the Home Guard was to protect the home town while the men were off fighting the war, but it couldn't keep the town from being ravaged by the outlaw gang.
Eldon you are filling me in on some history of Elba that I did not know. Growing up, we always remembered the flood of 1929. So glad to learn of the first recorded flood in Elba. The bit about Geneva was also interesting. I knew that their levee was built at the same time the Elba levee was built. I had assumed that the town of Geneva was built in its present location and the levee built around it. I did not know that the town had been moved after the Lincoln Flood you mentioned.
So happy to learn that my daughter Lynne has already signed on.
Good morning Lynne, and welcome to "Our ole Elba tales" I am Eldon L. Merritt and I married a girl from Elba by the name of Alice Faye (Dot) Gatlin in 1960. Dot and I set this list up so that the past and present citizens of Elba would be able to relive some of the past.
Please feel free to share any of your childhood days in Elba with us. I have always known your Grandparents "Saunders" from Samson, as I was born and raised there.
To change the subject a little I believe that the first RECORDED flood in Elba was in 1861 and it was called The Lincoln flood (after the President Ab. Lincoln) John or Rudolph, please correct me if I am wrong on this. That flood also caused the town of Geneva to be moved from it's former location at the junction of the rivers to it's present site. I have heard that this flood also destroyed the courthouse in Elba and the building that replaced that courthouse was burned by outlaws during the American Civil war in about 1863??? Ok. John help me out on this flood thing.
Hi everyone: I'm John Crook's daughter, Lynne Crook Daw. Although I've never lived in Elba, I used to enjoy visiting my Grandmother and cousins in Elba and always enjoy hearing stories my Daddy tells me of growing up in your wonderful town. I look forward to reading all of your great stories and memories. Thanks to those who started this group.

We need more members on "Our ole Elba Tales" so that we can get some good dialogue started. Please contact everyone that you know and ask them to join by sending the proper invite or contact us with their email address and let them request an invite. We really need some more from Elba and Coffee County.
Hello everyone, we have another new member to the "Our Ole Elba Tales"
Please meet Harold Rudolph Crook.
I knew Uncle Charlie Potter ( Porter) almost all my life as well. We would see him in town with his long corn sack getting all the garbage and old newspapers. He was always very friendly to us children. I have been to Uncle Charlie and his wife's house, we were always welcome. Finally some of the business men in Elba built him a small frame house on his property, he live there until his death.
I would like to know where he is buried. I have heard that he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Keep sending!
Regards,
Dot Gatlin Merritt and Eldon Merritt
My name is Harold Rudolph Crook. My father was Gerald Crook. My mother was Mattie Mae Crosby Crook. I was born at Goodman Al.I have lived here most of my life. I first knew Charley Porter when I was about 3 years old. We lived near the pool and my father was caretaker for the National Guard when they had horses. My older brother and I would go to Charleys and set on a bench at their table and Charley's wife would fix us syrup and biscuit by punching a hole in the biscuit and pouring syrup in it. Yes, we knew Charley well. Rudolph
I remember Jimmy Foley well, his dad was one of the local barbers in Elba. Jimmy always had a top that he played with and he was good with it, but he never wanted other children bothering him. I always remember Mrs. Althea Prescott, she was my 7th Grade Math teacher. One day I ask her what age she was and she pulled my ponytail and told me that she would throw me out the window. WOW, I was always afraid of Mrs. Prescott after that.
Mrs. Kate Ham was also one of my teachers. She was a very sweet person.
Mr. Dixon was my favorite principle, but he later started teaching D. O. and he wanted me to work for one of the lawyers in town, but my daddy would not allow it.
"Peanut Rushing" always carried a sign about the "Dooms Day". His real name was Cecil Rushing. He got his name from selling peanuts on the streets of Elba.
I guess that he made a pretty good living, because he had a wife, 3 very beautiful daughters and one son named Darrell.
I have heard that Darrell lives in Dothan and he is a minister.
Thanks for all the great memories!
Regards,
Dot
Eldon and Dot send me an interesting article on Uncle Charlie Porter that was writte by Mr C B McDowell for the ELBA CLIPPER. In the article he mentioned that at that time Uncle Charlie was more than 100 years of age and was the oldest person in Coffee County. I am sure that many of you knew and remember Uncle Charlie and where he lived in the "Lily Valley" section of the old Samson road. The thing I remember most is that Uncle Charlie always walked to Elba to purchase his copy of the ELBA CLIPPER. Come on folks and send in some of your memories of growing up in Elba. Do you remember the location of Elba's two livery stables (Mr Jesse Brown's and Mr Louie Dismukes')? Do you remember the old location of the ELBA CLIPPER? Do any of these names ring a bell for you: JIMMY FOLEY, RAY BAILEY, SMITH HARPER, WILLIS HARPER, MRS ALTHEA PRESCOTT, MRS KATE HAM, PROFESSOR JAMES C DIXON, MR "PEANUT" RUSHING? These are some of the older personalities. Join the fun by sharing your memories with all of us. John Crook

In our new "Tales of our ole Elba" You might like to ask questions such as, Who was Judge Carnley? Who started Dorsey Trailers? When was Sheriff Tillman elected and how long did he serve Coffee County? How old was Charlie Potter? When was Neil Grantham killed and by whom? When was the first recorded flood in Elba? You might be suppressed to see just how much we can learn by asking questions. I have seen on other groups where long lost relatives and friends have been reunited. Just ask and someone will know the answer.
Welcome to the "Tales" Sharon. This makes two 1960 Grad's from Elba High School to become members to our new website.
