New Census data show that fully half of adult Americans have fallen into poverty, or are living on earnings categorized as low income. Families with annual incomes of just $50,000 are now the richest family in the bottom half of America.
That's at least seventy million families that spend 97% of their income on essentials – 24% for taxes, 27% on housing, 12% on energy, and 34% on food, health care, child care, transportation, and household needs.
Open University welcomes DePaul University professor Paul Buchheit to discuss what the new data reveals about how Americans are now living. Paul researches and teaches on economic inequality issues. His most recent book is American Wars: Illusions and Realities (Clarity Press).
