Dear Family and Church Friends:

It seems my lovely face is going to have a bandage or two this
Christmas! ;-) Let me explain.

Yesterday I had an opportunity to visit with a very humorous Dr. at
Sloan Kettering about a spot on my jaw that Sue noticed in early
October. We both thought it was a large dark freckle, a nod to my
Irish and red headed heritage. Instead it was a nod to my father's
propensity for things on his skin!

After a few tests from a biopsy sent from Middletown to Columbia
Presbyterian and then to Sloan Kettering, it was decided it was a
skin cancer and that it needed to go.

So on Monday, I am going back to Sloan Kettering for pre operative
testing: blood work, EKG, chest Xray, visit with a cardiologist
(anyone want to help me get there and back, first appointment is at
9:30am), and then on Thursday I am going to have the spot removed
along with a lymph node or two. The surgery is same day, so Sue and I
will go to NYC on Wednesday night and stay with her brother and his
wife, then drive over to the hospital for the surgery and then home
that evening. Driving together is the most dangerous part of this!

The doctor seems to think that the surgery will remove the cancer and
that will be that.

I'm hoping that the result will not be my handsome mug being all
scary for small children on Christmas, but oh well. The news so far
is better than expected and certainly an answer to prayer, and it
appears that though I will not be able to blow my own horn on
Christmas Eve (or on December 20th), I will be able to preach and
pray, and so I expect all you excellent folks will be there to see
how well this strange looking preacher man can do!

As for family, you have always argued I am a little off beat. Now it
appears I may look the part! Dr. Singh (yes, the same last name as my
cardiologist) even offered that the scar might be in the shape of a
small line or circle, so Sue suggested a lightning bolt scar so I
could be the new Harry Potter, kind of.  He and she got along just fine!

Your prayers and best wishes are both desired and a source of great
comfort. Feel free to call today if you would like. Sue and I will be
at home discussing at some length who has to put up the Christmas
decorations. Oh boy!

Sight and Sound Trip

Thank you to all who signed up for this awesome trip to see The
Miracle of Christmas. I have heard all good things and I'm sure the
show will be great.  I have confirmed our bus and have the tickets in
hand for lunch and the show.  So here is the itinerary:

Meet at the church about 9;45am-9:50am.  THE BUS will leave at 10:00am.
(It takes about 3 hours and 5 mins. to get there,so we have extra
time for traffic, construction and weather.  There is a gift shop to
look around in and stretch out our legs too!)

LUNCH: reservations are for 2:00pm at Good and Plenty, with a family
style meal of all you can eat!!  Amish home cooking...Eat a small breakfast!

Show: Our show is at 4:15pm and is about 2 1/2 hours long so we
should be on the bus at about 7:00pm and then head back to Otisville
and should arrive between 10:00pm and 10:30pm.

All of the costs are included in your ticket price.  The round trip
transportation, meal, show and all gratuities.  You will only need
extra money if you would like to purchase a souvenir, or a Christmas
present for me!

We are traveling on a Leprechaun motor coach with a bathroom and DVD
player.  If you have a movie you would like to share, please bring it along.

We still have 4 seats left if anyone would like to go.  If you are
going call your friends to see if they would like to join you!!  If
you really wanted to go but could not afford it, contact Jeff or
myself we would love to fill all the seats!!

I know we will all enjoy the trip and I look forward to seeing you
all tomorrow before 10:00am!

What a great way to start off the Christmas
season by experiencing the Miracle of Christmas, performed with live animals.

The Otisville-Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church has a
trip planned to see The Miracle of Christmas at
the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster,
Pa.  The trip is scheduled for Saturday, December
5th.  The bus will leave at 9:30am and return
approximately 10:00pm.  We will arrive for lunch
at Good and Plenty, an Amish restaurant that
serves family style, all you can eat.  Then we
will go to the theater for a 4:15pm show.  The
show is approximately 2 ½ hours.  Then we will
head home. We will be traveling on a motor coach bus with a bathroom.

The cost per person:

Adults                               $100.00
Teens (13-19yrs)                   79.00
Children (12 and under)        56.00

The price includes: your meal, show tickets,
round trip transportation, driver’s tip and
gratuities at the restaurant. If you are

One of the things a church can do is celebrate what God is doing in
it's midst. The other is to look seriously and carefully at what is
not happening and why.

We are headed off to the Presbytery meeting tomorrow to celebrate
many of the wonderful things that are happening here. We will have a
crazy good time. But I am curious what is not happening. And if we
can figure it out, why.

I am looking at next year's preaching and at how we have staged our
people and resources and just want to make sure that we are seeing
all that needs to be seen in looking forward.

Two areas of church life have caught my attention. One is we need to
ASAP get in place a Middle School Youth minister/ministry. Allison is
doing a fantastic job with the Middle School Sunday School, has
recruited some really special teachers (Joe Miedema comes to mind),
and Rita and Jim O'Loughlin and Kim Ferrier are working their hearts
out with the Senior Highs. But we need more and fast.

The other is marshalling the energy, imagination, and commitment of
our younger adults. They have such fresh ideas and boundless
excitement that we need to do something crazy and new with them.

But there could be more stuff we need to look at and do. So let me know!

What is it that is not happening in our midst as God's people and
why? Let the spirit flow friends!

Friday, when in fact it is on Sunday, 11/22 from 7-9pm in the

I am going to the Presbytery meeting with John Goldsmith , Gerda
Krogslund, and Susan Conklin to give a ten minute presentation about
our church during their worship service.

Gerda Krogslund and Elizabeth Orengo have produced a wonderful
Powerpoint visual montage to present, but we also need a script for
what we are to say. The theme is "Give Thanks", so I am looking for
one word, or short phrase items that the people of the Otisville -
Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church are thankful for about what God is doing
in our church.

I am thankful for God's gift of:
"gracious and grace-filled people"
" church leaders who love and accept me, flaws and all"
