I was looking to crew on a sail boat. I made a connection and had my first
race last night. We won and it was great to make that connect at this site.
Thank you for this site. Big D

Big D,

I have just noticed that you are sending these messages through our public (not
members only) site. This is just an infomational site to give people an
introduction to the club and access to our membership application.

If you did not automatically receive the 2009 membership form when you became a
member of this yahoo group, you can find it on the "Files" section of the
webpage. Once you fill it out and mail it in with the small dues ($25.00 to pay
for group supplies when events are hosted), you will gain access to the members
only yahoo group, OSYC. On the member site, you will see a calendar of events
and will be able to chat etc.. with all the members... If you have any
questions, I think our membership chair has contact info on the webpage as
well...

Hey Bigd,

Welcome to Open Seas.  As you know, boats are quite personal and have limited
space, so sometimes it is tough for people to blindly invite someone on their
boat for a weekend until they get to know you.  This leads to it being
difficult to get your first crew hook-up on a boat in the club.  When I first
joined the group, I only had a daysailor, and had the same problem (but for a
very short time!....I met great people very fast!).  I think you will find it
easier to get offers once the group has met you.

I believe the best way is to try and look at the schedule and meet the group at
one of the weekend locations by car.  You can then hop out onto the boats if
they are rafted out, or just meet them at the marina for the day.  If it is a
raft-up and not a marina event, I would post a message to the group of when you
will be arriving, and ask for a phone number contact of someone attending.  I
am sure one of us can dinghy you out to the raft-up for cocktails etc...  Once
people start to know you, I'm sure you'll have no problem getting invited out
for an overnight cruise.

This is just a suggestion, but I think it is woth a shot...

Fair Winds,

Joel and Brian

Members of this list Openseasyachtclub:

Open Seas is eager to attract new members to our friendly group of mixed
powerboaters/sailboaters, for many weekends of fun rendezvous around the middle
and northen parts of the Bay, both shores, and one extended cruise. Membership
is only $25 for individuals, $35 for couples, for the 2009 season. Dues offsets
some of the costs incurred by hosts of the weekend, and support club activities
like modest participation in Pride, etc. Our membership communicates with each
other throughout the year via a members-only group on yahoo (www.osyc.org). If
you would like more information about the group, please feel free to post your
question here or email me at info@....

I have uploaded a 2009 membership application to the FILES section. To join, you
would complete and sign the membership application and send it to the address at
the top, along with a check for your membership dues. Yesterday we had an
awesome 2009 Captains meeting at a gorgeous undisclosed location :-) overlooking
the water and enjoying the summer haze, planning out the boating season, picking
destinations and hosts. Please consider joining and supporting the original gay
boating club of the Chesapeake Bay.

Hi All,

We're moving our 30' Watkins down from Philadelphia this Spring to the
Chesapeake to the Sassafras/Still Pond/Rock Hall area as we like to
swim (freshwater) as well as sail.

I'll post some pics of us and our boat to the Photos section.

We had a great group of friends were we use to keep our boat before
moving to Philly (Atlanta; Lake Lanier) and am curious if there is a
common raft-up place folks frequent in the North/Middle region of the
Bay?

Cheers!

Hello everyone,

Brian Wheeler posted the question: Is this group a going concern? It
is...here's the story. We have two websites, both in Yahoo! groups.
This, the one titled openseasyachtclub, is the public website. The
other, titled OSYC, is our members-only website. The OSYC website is
accessible to anyone who has joined the group as a member, this
website is open to everyone to promote our club and encourage further
inquiry into membership. All of the real action happens on our members
website, and I would be happy to give anyone temporary access if you
would like to get a feel for the group and consider joining. In
general, there are rendez-vous planned almost every weekend in the
summer, at different locations around the middle bay (Poole's Island
to Solomons Island, both shores). We really could use some new members
and active participants, since the group has been going for many years
and from time to time the organization ebbs. Basically, we are gay and
lesbian boaters, both power and sail, with the majority of our members
in the Annapolis/Balt/ DC region.

Thank you Brian for asking the question, and in the meantime I will
try to update this public site and make an additional pitch for
membership in June, when the fun really starts on the water. Our
membership is $25 annually, which gives you full access to the site,
including event and member lists, photos, postings, etc. The
membership fees cover the cost of some events, a contribution to
CHesapeake Pride so that our group publicly supports that, and other
small things. We have a very small budget, we just need to offset with
minimal contributions from boaters to keep the group organized in a
semi-coherent way. Also, charging a modest membership allows us to
distinguish the core group or active members.

Please feel free to ask any additional questions or email me offline
with questions or comments.

Thank you!
