Now that's a new one. This post comes to me too, so if the date is wrong
again, I'll check and see what's up with my server.

Whew...that place has gotten scary...Let's promise each other right now we
won't get into the arguments and flame wars that seem to have taken over
that group. I also noticed that none of us post there much any more.

Terry, did you ever go to the "Nationals" in Hutchinson, Ks.? I got to
re-reading your post, and remembered that it's still an NCRA sanctioned
race. No mo' super modifieds, though, but they do race all afternoon.
Seems like the two biggest classes were the IMCA modifieds and the late
models. The late models put on the best show, they had a ton of them, and
I believe they run 410 motors, too. I think the only sprint cars were
360's. Mike Peters won "as usual".
Also, I need to cast one part for a model I'm working on. I was told at
the hobby shop that talcum powder is a good release agent? Will that work
OK? What do you use, Chris? I can use the rest of the resin polymer for
an art project I'm doing at school, I'm sure it won't go to waste.

I don't know about other subscribers, but I personally prefer NOT to
have photos attached to my email. The mail server at my ISP is not the
fastest. Thus a message with an attached photo means my whole download
of new mail takes forever.
However, the basic web access is very good throughput. Therefore, I
prefer seeing photos from a web site. I would recommend two things. If
members have their own web site, post photos there and notify others by
the list that they are there. For those who have no web site, I think
we need to work with Terry to help him out with uploading files to the
group's web site.

I'm all for posting photos drawings anything to do with open wheel racing. I
don't know how to do it but anyone who wants is welcome to. I am really trying
to sit back and watch this thing take on a life of it's own.
I have a lot of photos, magazine photos, racing yearbooks, including a midget
yearbook from the 50's with Buzz Barton, Jimmy Reese, Cotton Farmer, Lloyd Ruby,
and a host of other greats from the days when a guy could race 5 nights a week
and never travel farther than 250 miles from Oklahoma City, 3 of those nights
with in 25 miles of OKC.
Sorry, I'm rambling again.
You have my blessing.

Thanks, Don, you're always so helpful. When you have time, let me know
what I need to do to get some of the CAE drawings to you. Can I save them
to a zip disk and e-mail them that way, or do you want me to send you the
disk in the mail? At this time you can probably do more with them than I
can. I don't have a scanner here at home, but we do have some at school.
If I copy them using jpeg or pict, can your computer read them even if I do
the work on a Macintosh? Since it's an art computer lab all they have are
Macs'. I'd be glad to do that, either way. I'd also like to scan in some
pictures of my models. Could we all do that and put them on the site? What
say ye', Terry? this is kinda your baby...
Went to Austin today to take a stress test. It's been seven weeks since
the heart attack. I guess I'm doing pretty good, he doesn't need to see me
again for a year. They weighed me again and I've lost 23 lbs. Pretty
proud of that, but still ashamed I let myself get in such crappy shape.
They got my heart rate up to 156. You bust your butt on those stress
tests, believe me!
Guys, of the vendors on Don's list, Etzell and Early Racing Classics are
the only two I've ever used. Like I said the other night, Chris's stuff is
always first rate. ERC stuff is really good too, and Karl is a real good
guy to do business with. I get most of my super-modified wheels and tires
from him. He has some neat and unusual bodies, too. I bought a 36 Ford
coupe body and a 32 Ford sedan body from him, as well as all kinds of tires
and wheels.

Mike and the rest of the list,
A number of years ago I was visiting Jim Gilliam of Gilliam Racing Wheels &
Beadlocks (one of the main manufacturers of wheels & beadlocks for open wheel
racing) and when I got to the area where the polish aluminum wheels I learned an
easy method for removing the plack residue from polished parts, flour, common
household baking flour, dust it on wipe it off.
Works great!
Have a great day all!

I had received so many questions about where to buy this or that that I
had put together a sheet of vendors I am aware of. I thought it might
be a good idea to send this to the list. It concentrates on wheels,
since for most scratch builders without a lathe the wheels and tires are

I use Mother's Aluminum polish. This stuff is very popular with classic
car buffs and is sold in many auto parts stores. I then use a buffing
wheel on a
Dremel cordless, on the low speed, for buffing it up. Just as it does
on aluminum, this polish turns the metal black. But when you are
finished buffing, the black then polishes off easily and you are left
with a shiny surface. I sometimes finish off with Testor's glosscoat,
but that does fog the parts a little, so I don't always do this. It
depends on how fragile the part is, and how accessible for future
polishing. If it is something I do not want to ever touch again, I
usually DO overcoat.
Anyone know how polished white metal, with a good polished surface,
oxidizes over time? Am I needlessly worrying with the overcoat?

Chris,
I'm glad you joined the group. Sounds like you have some neat subjects
coming along. I'll be getting a new catalog as soon as your new products
come out. Let us know.
The problems I have with white metal are probably a combination of lack of
experience and maybe some impatience. I'm a good modeller, but not a great
modeller. I'm not sure what to expect as far as getting a "chrome finish"
on the radius rods, grille (actually, I got that to look pretty good),
bumpers, etc. I may not have the tools I need, either. I did get a set of
really small files in Austin last summer, and they help with the smaller
pieces. I think I just need to relax and take my time. I don't think a
guy can just knock one of these out quickly. I've replaced the front
bumper with aluminum, but I never thought to ask you if I could order new
front and rear bumpers for my midget. Let me know how much they would cost
me, and I'll have a check on the way tomorrow. That might be the way to
go.
I hope Jon orders something from you. It's hard to explain the quality of
your work to someone if they've never seen it.

Hello!
Please allow me to introduce myself. I got e-mail about this group from
Don (thanks Don!) a couple days ago and have been lurking since. That
defines me pretty much when it comes to the net, mostly a lurker. My
name is Chris Etzel and I am Etzel's Speed Classics (with some help
from various talented suppliers). I am certainly glad this list was
started and want to pass my thanks on to those who got it off the
ground.
My interest is first and foremost open wheel oval racing, no matter the
type (Silver Crown cars mesmerize me). Then I like open wheel road
course racing (F-1 fan and IRL fan...how can that be?!<g>) and also
endurance sports cars (LeMans, 24hrs Daytona, etc.). If I had to rank
any of these as to my level of interest, they'd all be very close and
all lumped at the "fanatical" end of the scale. Indy cars, however, have
always held a special place for me.
My model focus is pretty much all race cars (where I started as a lad),
25th, 24th and 43rd scale. I also race scale 32nd slots (we have a small
league for Indy cars new and vintage). This is the closest I've gotten
to real racing with the minor exception of driving an old GTO way too
fast as a younger man and working for a drag racing chassis builder
years ago.
I build what captures my fancy (when I'm not building for work), so that
could be anything from a Tamiya CLK-GTR to a Monogram sprinter
stretched, widened and converted to a silver crown car. I actually only
build about one model a year for "me". The last three where Tony
Stewart's `95 Championship Boles sprinter in pavement configuration,
Donnie Beechler's `97 Zarounian silver crown car in dirt set-up and most
recetly Rodger Ward's KK500C from 1956 (Filter Queen Special). Most of
the other stuff I do is either my kits or other pieces with the intent
to sell.
Geez...I haven't typed this much since my last instruction sheet.
Well, thanks for the nice comments on my midget kit. For the fellow who
asked, I've put together some pics in a collage so he can take a look.
I've been meaning to get a web site finished, but other things have had
a habit of jumping in the way so far. I'll post a note here and
elsewhere when I get it done finally.
http://home1.gte.net/web103xk/midgetcollage2.0.jpg
Here's a couple links to what's next. The pattern shot was taken a
couple months ago and doesn't show correct wheels or wings. Everything
is now done properly and in the poduction pipeline. The decal sheet
still has a couple tidbits missing and isn't likely to be layed out
exactly as you see it here, but what the heck, these will give you an
idea. I might produce some limited run decals (Alps) for some others I'm
doing art for.
http://home1.gte.net/web103xk/dallarafinal.jpghttp://home1.gte.net/web103xk/whole_sheetfinal.jpg
On the pattern bench as I type are the bodies of two late fifties
roadsters with a third just days away from being carved. On the model
bench (same bench really) are...oh geez...`98 LeMans winning Porsche
GT-1 (43rd), Bardahl Kurts Ferrari (43rd), Miller 91rd (43rd), `98
Daytona winning Momo 333SP (43rd), Tuffy midget (25th), Jim White midget
(25th), Schmidt Special Kuzma (25th), a yet to be determined 32nd
Dallara slot car and test shot of Cheever's `98 Indy winner that I need
to start painting. As a friend said recently...too many irons in the
fire at Scuderia Etzel!
Sorry to be long winded...won't happen often as I'm not much for typing!

Boy, did I hate that guy! I was a big Al Lemmons fan, and he and Buddy
used to really go at it! Theirs was a friendly rivalry though, but we
didn't know that. If you remember back when you were probably in the fifth
or sixth grade, you kid you, we used to pack 10-11,000 into the Fairgronds
Speedway every Saturday night. Half of them were Lemmons fans, and half
Cagle fans. God, the boos and cheers. It was really FUN! You have to
respect a guy who has Denny Moore pitting for him. All I remember about
the Moores is seeing that ugly yellow Ford sedan at their house when they
were working on it. I had a friend who lived right down the street, and I
remember him getting pissed cuz Denny Moore Jr. kept trying to get in his
sister's pants. Now how do I remember THAT? Cagle always drove Ford
powered cars, as did Emmett Hahn when he started driving for Zink in the
seventies. That was another thing. When I lived in Tulsa, we all cheered
for Emmett, but when I lived in Kansas we all booed him. That ugly yellow
car at least had a little blue on it. Emmett won the last super modified
race I ever saw in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1978 or 79. Then I moved to
Texas. Bummer, should have stayed.
Listen, I have access to scanners and such at school, I'll try to figure
out how to get as much information as I can on a zip drive and e-mail it to
you guys. Or maybe I'll just set up a site of my own. I do have some cool
pictures, they'll really bring back some memories. I have Danley Clow's
1965 Yearbook that has pictures of almost all of the guys we talk about.
As for the models you're looking for, I remember one called a "Sportsman
Racer", but it was 35 or 40 years ago, so I don't remember who made it. It
does kinda sound like the ones you describe. I probably poured lighter
fluid on that one, too...I've modified a Mongram '32 Ford 3 window coupe to
look like a super modified body. I was going to send it to Karl Stark at
Early Racing Classics to see if he wanted to mold it, but I never got
around to it. It was simple to do. I just sectioned a quarter inch out
of it, and enlarged the windows to what I thought they should look like,
puttied it up, and voila! I'll probably scratch build a frame for it, and
use wheels and tires from ERC. Don't know about the motor yet. Probably
drop a Mongram after market 283 into it, or a small block Ford. Just don't
want to hurry it.
Talk to you guys later

Hey Mike,
If you were going to the races in Tulsa in the late 60's you saw another
roadster/super modified, John Zink fielded a roadster converted into a super.
Buddy Cagle was the driver and he won the Tulsa championship and many A-features
at Oklahoma City with that car. This car was almost as famous for it's ugly
paint jobs as it was for winning, one year it was Peptobismal pink, one year
Hunter green and another school bus yellow, which became Zink's standard color
until the stopped racing supers (later known as champ dirt cars) in the 80's.
Incidentally, the crew cheif was Denny Moore, the same crew cheif of Zink's Indy
winning cars.
Here's a little triva for those who were not familar with racing in the
Oklahoma-Kansas-Texas area in the mid to late 80's. Our main class of race cars
were know as super modified, but when it was discovered there were only minor
differences between these cars and the USAC champ dirt cars, they were renamed.
Racing under the NCRA banner several USAC vs NCRA races were held. I don't
remember all the winners, but the weekend racers of NCRA more than held they're
own agains the big professional USAC teams. In recent years NCRA has switched
to 410 outlaw sprints and have an annual "thunder through the plains" NCRA vs
All Star Sprints series.
Finally something from me about model cars. I would like to find a couple of
models I built as a kid by Lindberg, one was called the "Red Devil" and the
other was called the "California Sportsman", any help locating either of these
would be appreciated.
That's all folks!!!
Terry

have to buy for the kit is material for the rear axle and exhaust pipe.
There are several decal choices, at least ten or so, and the drivers and
cars are people and cars that you've heard of, not something someone made
up. There are painting diagrams for each car too, including seat color,
and if the car had injectors or carburetors. I don't think I cleaned any
flash off of mine, the castings were impeccable. I have a hard time
working with white metal, though, as I've never done it, and at this point,
don't like working with it. Maybe some tips, guys? Give Chris a call, or
e-mail him, he's a really friendly guy, and loves these cars as much as we
do. In fact, Jon, invite him to join the group like you did me. If you
don't want to, I will, but you do such a good job of creating interest in
the group! Also, Don Stauffer has built some of Etzell's cars, check his
site. How about it, Don, have a critique or advice for Jon? I say he
should go for it.
Also, Jon, Etzell has several other cars that might interest you. Old Indy
cars, champ cars, sprinters, a really cool 1/25 Offenhauser that you can
put in any car, figures, wheels and tires. His catalog is worth it, just to
see some neat subject matter.
Now for Russell:
Welcome! This site has taken off really well in a real short time. Jon
e-mailed me and told me about it. I think I was the third one. I know it
will grow, as we are finding out how many guys like these kinds of cars.
Visit these guys' web-sites. They do really nice work. Don has a really
nice website. I did see one roadster super-modified in my life. It raced
in Houston in the late sixties. It was just a roadster with a cage. Don't
remember the engine, that was thirty years ago (yikes!) They used to have a
paved oval there, Meyer Speedway. Every 4th of July they would have the
Liberty Bell 300 for supers. I think Wayne Niedecken won the first one I
saw, I guess he's sorta from your neck of the woods. Hugh Richards was
also one of the few deep south modified drivers who used to come to Houston
and really kick some butt. One year I think he won every feature.
Welcome, again, this is gonna be fun.
Best regards to all,
mike ehrlich

I took a picture of my current project today, and put it on my modeling
page; http://home1.gte.net/stauffer/models.htm
I guess I didn't lighten it enough for the web. Sorry it is so dark.
(it is the last photo on the page). Still to do is the rear bumper,
rear shocks, and knockoff hubs.

Hi all
Thanks for including me in this group. My name is Russell Whaley. I build
mostly
modifides of the late 50s,and early 60s. You can see some of my projects at
<A HREF="http://members.aol.com/brownstime/Page1.html">Russell's Page</A> .
I grew up in the 60s, in Tampa Fla. The local short track at that time was
the Golden Gate Speedway. It was a third mile oval asphalt. Buzzie Retiumann ,
and Will Cagle raced there before going up north to race the modifieds. The
track switched from coupes to sprinters in the early 70s. Many Tampa racers
have won the Little Indy. The IMCA sprinters used to race on the half mile
clay
Plant Field once a year. Jan Opperman was the best I have ever seen on the
dirt.
I am curently building the 1956 D-A Special Kuzma Offy, driven by Bob
Swelkert.
This is the Etzels Speed Classics model. It has sat half built for a year, but
seeing
Don Stauffers excellent build of this model in SAE April 99, I have got off my
butt,
and mine looks more like a real racer every day.
My favorite race cars are the supermodifieds built from the indy roadsters.
I never saw them race in person, but I can see the speed in the photos I have
seen.
I hope to start on a plastic version soon. I will probably start with the AMT
Watson
Roadster.
Thanks again Russell Whaley.

Say Hey !
Ouch ! One of my standard greetings just reminded me that I lost a
wonderful neighbor...and the world a wonderful person. The "Dimagg"
hailed from here in Hollywood in recent years. Whatta guy.
This is kinda an open reply to Jon and Mikes recent communications as
I'm a bit pressed for time....hope it's OK with you guys.
Thanks to Mike for the info on the race. Sadly this stuff never makes
our papers and seldom the news so when I nod off during the "B" main,
that's it. Can't find time to read all of the periodicals either.
Absolutely love ALL of the open wheel dirt cars (well maybe with the
exception of those sedans they run in the NE). Connections with my work
see me spectating at sports car and F-I events but I'd much rather see
an Outlaw or Sprint driver backing one into the cushion. My childhood
(a continuing saga according to my wife) saw me spectating in the
Easton/Allentown/Bethlehem area of Pennsylvania and I pretty sure I saw
some of Mario's early activity. I'm in the armpit of the world for this
type racing now though. The only action is St. Augustine and the
Outlaws once a year (and perhaps a bit around Tampa/St. Pete.). Things
are looking up a bit though as I'm currently looking at a move to
Tallahassee.....true, not a hotbed of action but a bit closer to things.
Mike, I for one would love to see the photos and drawings you
mentioned....not nearly enough of this stuff around. Have a ball on the
20th. That seems to be a real hot date for racing.....I'll be doing
Sebring (a pilgrimage), missing the CART event at Homestead,
Gatornationals (I think) and several others around the country.
You'll love that rotary table when you get it up and running Jon, mine
has certainly eased a great deal of work which otherwise would have been
drudgery. I can't say enough good things about the Sherline products.
I just upgraded to the new lathe and mill, both with the digital
readouts, new compound, indexed vise table and sine table. What
improvements ! Spoke to Joe Martin about the CNC stuff but we agreed
that since I do each car to order there was not near enough advantage
for me to offset the costs.
Most of my work tends to be 1:12 sc., however, occasionally I get a
commission off scale and/or sneak in something of my own. I've a Tameo
1:43 Lotus 25 of my own all painted and ready for final assembly (it
calls out to me from it's cigar box home in the wee hours) that I shot
along with a client car and two of the 1:20 sc. Tamiya's to do on
commission eventually, so I've done my homework on that subject. Let me
know if you need reference info, I've a ton of vintage/out of print F-I
& sports car material in my reference library. I still have some of my
re-engineering drawings for the Lotus 49 you saw in the posted photos if
you think that they'll be of help (shocks/injector
bodies/intakes/etc.). I'd kill for a 1:12sc. Tamiya
sprint/outlaws/super-modified car to use as a base ! Wonder how many
they'd sell ?
Currently a Ferrari 312T (Lauda World Champ. car) on the boards waiting
for my attempt at a fully machined monocoque. There'll be a bunch more
machined parts than the posted cars, however, I fear that the upcoming
move and probable reconstruction of my studio might disrupt that process
at least a bit :(
Gotta run for now, look forward to hearin from ya'll.

He Mike glad you joined,
I am 45. Stan Schoneberg was one of my dads best friends, a neat note about him
during his last season racing I work at Dale Parson Auto Racing and did repairs
on his car a time or two. Stan had a slot car racing center as well as my folks
and each week we took turns visiting each others tracks. I must have had a least
5 #11 "Ice Cream Wagon" slot cars. During the early 70's I was in Tulas every
Saturday night working with D.E. Suggs driving the Noel Crain & Danny Thurman #1
(I was pitman & also took care of D.E. helmet, I was 18 at the time) or Dale
Parson's #67 (I was crew chief) or Larry Hill's #11 w/D.E. driving (I was crew
chief). My favorite Tulsa driver was proably Chick Shattuck (can't remember
spelling) because he was so much fun to be around. Funny story about Tulsa, when
I was hired by Larry Hill to crew chief his car the first night we went to Tulsa
D.E. not only won the A-feature he set a track record that was never broken,
lapped everyine but Emmit Hahn and a young Mike Peters, after the races I made
the comment that I thought Mike Peters was the best young driver in the area,
when D.E. decided to build and drive a car we designed & built together, who do
you think replaced him, Mike Peters, Mike won the OKC championship 2 years
running then went on to finish 10 in the World of Outlaws points in Lavern
Nance's 1n sprinter (that is a story in itself). Back to Tulsa the following
week D.E. finshed 2nd and the next week he won again, you talk about setting the
rumor mill on fire, each week I would be met at Tulsa's pit gate with half a
dozen people with the latest gossip about me, people were giving me way too much
credit for D.E.'s sudden success, all I did was see to it that the proper
maintenace was being done, Larry gave D.E. and I the freedom to do whatever
needed to be done, D.E. and I always made the chassis and tire decisions
together although if you were around the pit it looked like I called the shot
solely, but I never made a change that we did not discuss.
I use to have a great time with Frankie Lies, and Frankie did lie, if you asked
him about his setup there was no telling what he might say and when he would ask
me what gear we were running I would tell him just as big a lie, then he'd go,
that's the same gear we're using.
I never had the success as a driver I want, but I was really blessed, at age 25
I was on a first name basis with Jack Walker (and his son Ricky were close
friends), crew chiefed for IMCA sprint car star & former Knosville Nat's winner
Jay Woodside, former Knosville Nat's winner Thad Dosher told my wife at the
Hutchinson National he hoped to get to work with me (I was thrilled he even new
my name), had gotten to be friends with Jan Opperman, knew all the OKC drivers
well from Aaron Madden (his son Larry is working on my mom's car tomorrow) &
Evard & Tom Humphrey & Bobby Laden & Bill Lewis (crew chiefed a car Bill drove 2
nights) & Bob Eichor & many others, Tulsa drivers Ray Crawford, Bennie Taylor &
Chick & Emmit Hahn & Doug ? & Dareal Brazil as well as others. I also got
aquainted with Cotton Farmer (he was always telling me I need to put a little
nitro, pop as he called it in the tank, Junior Hilleburg (Andy's dad), Rich
Vogler, Bob Wente, Jon Singer the best sprint car mechanic I ever met including
Karl Kinser (ask Carson, Wolfgang, Roger Rager, Thad Dosher, Ron Shuman, Bob
Trostle, Speedway Bill Smith, and many more he helped to major victories. I
also got to hang with early WoO star Bobby Marshall, James & Jim Mclreath,
Dallas ledgend Bullet Bob Ewell (he wated me to help him with his team a couple
of years ago), midget, sprint and indy car driver Buzz Barton, Chuck Gurney,
George Ziggy Snider, Doug "Mr VW Midget" Caruthers, Whicita/Tulsa/Pennsylvania
driver Jerry "Stoney" Stone (Dennis, Jerry's brother is an old R/C & Odyssey
racer), sprint car & super ledgend Harold Leep (Harold Lloyd (known as Leep Jr.
is a longtime friend.
I could go on for hours, I know or have known drivers from all over the US and I
even pitted for New Zeland midget driver Barry Handlin.
It's a small world after all.
Sorry, I's not hard to get me going.

I guess I've posted to and been posted from some of you at one time or
another. Great to see Don Stauffer here. You guys need to see the work he
does... it's awesome!
Terry, how old are you? I'm 48 and grew up and lived in Tulsa until I was
fifteen in 1964. I remember Dale Reed and Roy Bryant well, as I went to
Wichita every summer to see my grandma and grandpa, and I saw them race
there. My favorites in Tulsa were Al Lemmons and Ron Fowler, and I guess
my OK City favorites were Stan Schoenberg and Aaron Madden. My cousin and
I pitted for Frank Lies in Wichita in the late seventies. Looks like we
may have similar stomping grounds when we were young.
I'm like most of you guys, I love sprints, midgets, and super-modifieds.
I also remember the 50's and 60's style modifieds with the coupe and sedan
bodies. As soon as we get this thing up and running well, I'll scan some
of my photos at school and get them to you guys. Right now I'm working on
the Galaxie Ltd. '48 Chevrolet. It is an excellent kit. I'm doing it
stock, as most everything I do is either competition or hot rods. I guess
I'll build it to enter in contests, I'm doing a pretty good job on it.
The Dude won Saturday night in Las Vegas. The track was really dry-slick
for the feature, and they didn't do much passing (Want a challenge, try
explaining dry-slick to your wife!) He won the dash and started pole, and
was never really challenged.Tyler Walker is no longer the youngest outlaw.
There were two brothers racing who are still in their teens, and I believe
one, if not both, are still in high school. Lucky...
I'll be in Houston on March 20 for the outlaw show. My oldest son is also
a fan. He graduated from college last spring, and I promised him I'd take
him to the races as a graduation present. I don't think he realizes how
fast and scary they are. I used to think I'd like to try that once...
yeah, right!
Speaking of college, I'm a full time student at Southwest Texas State
University in San Marcos, Texas. I'm an Art-Education major. l should
hopefully be finished by spring of 2000. I'd like to graduate before I
turn 50.
I also have some drawings and such to share. I got a CAE catalog back in
the sixties, and it has some pretty good schematic drawings. Guys, this is
gonna be great. Jon, thanks for inviting me to join.

I would like to thank eveyone who has joined the open wheel group. My reasons
for starting it were very selfish. I don't have much time to search for kits,
part, plans, photos, etc. or even building models any more, but the interest is
still there, so I thought this would be a good way to stay in the hobby, learn
from everyone who joined. I believe everyone has something to bring to the table
no matter what their favorite model building is or their level of expertise.
I have to be upfront and tell you I have no personal interest in F1 or CART, but
I welcome everyone who is a fan of these racers, I am a racer at heart, I mean I
have known times in the winter when no racing was going on that if someone would
have put numbers on a bunch of turtles I would have been watching. My favorite
race cars are midgets, sprints, champ dirt cars (Silver Crown, Silvet Bullet)
and the old dirt track coupes & sedans of the 50's & 60's.
I mostly build sprints, midgets and old indy cars (pre rear engines), I collect
premium diecast sprints and occasionally refinish/customize diecast sprints to
look like cars that are not available.
I have raced slot cars, R/C cars, go karts, modifieds, super modifieds,
semi-late models, Honda Odyssey's, and even did a little drag racing. I have
been involved as a driver, owner, pit man crew chief, official, car
builder/repairman, track promoter, track manager. As a crew chief & car builder
in the mid 70's I passed up several chances to be a sprint crew chief or to work
in several famous shops just because I wanted to drive, what was I thinking. The
most famous driver I have worked with is Kenny Schrader while he was driving the
famous #55 Hamilton V6 Chevy midget, although it was a kick working with Kenny,
I was more excited about working with the car's builder and crew cheif Bob
Higman. I have had a long standing friendship with former World of Outlaw star
Shane Carson, this goes back to racing slot cars when we were teenagers. I
worked with OK-Tex-Kan ledgends, Roy Bryant, Dale Reed and D.E. Suggs along with
a lot of other good drivers. My favorite driver to work with was D.E. Suggs, he
could do more with less than any driver I have ever seen or worked with, I
believe if he had ever gotten with a money is no object team he could have
reached Steve Kinser status. My other favorite driver was my son, although by
the time he was ready to move up to full size race cars we no longer had the
means, I know he would or still could for that matter be really good. H was a
national & state Honda Odyssey racing champion at age 9. A feature article whas
done on him in a national raing publication (Midgets & Mini Sprints Racing News
now defunct) when he was 10 and racing micro midgets and then I was laid off my
job when he was 14 and we had to give up racing, who knows, he is only 25, we
may make it back into racing one of these days.
Well that is proably more than you wanted to know about me, but I am glad you
joined, I look forward to reading your comments and using your ideas. Feel free
to email me any time I can be of assistance or if you have a question.

Thought I would take a few moments to introduce myself.
Open wheel racing cars are my favorite model genre. I would say about
80% of my models fit that category. Several are on my modeling page. Go
to my home site and click the modeling link about a quarter of the way
down my home page. My other main hobby (though I have several others)
is vintage open wheel racing, which is, of course, highly related, so
you may also want to explore the IMCA Old Timers link.
I do a lot of scratch building. That meant I had to learn CAD to make
adequate drawings. After doing several drawings I decided maybe others
would be interested in purchasing them, so I started a small weekend
business. Send a stamped large self-addressed envelope to Superior
Features, Box 82, Anoka, MN 55303.
I recently bought a digital camera, so I can update photos more rapidly,
rather than waiting till they are developed, and scanning them.
My current project is a 1/8 sprint car using the old Monogram Big T for
the Chev engine block, heads, and oil pan. It is still under
construction, but is nearing completion (I think).

Just subscribed and visited the "group site" to see what's been going
on. Not
much apparently.
I've plugged in a couple of sites with about 10 (thumbnailed) pages of
photos of some of my open wheel cars to give ya'll an idea of what I've
been up
to. As you'll note it's mostly 1:12sc.F-I stuff but there is also a
pretty nifty 1:20sc. Indy car in there. Sorry about those photos not
being up to the
quality of the remainder but that one got away before I could get
the "pro" to shoot it so it's my photo work (as a photographer I make a
pretty
decent car builder:<). Site runs well/fast and the photo quality is
pretty good so it won't tie ya up too long.
How about ya'll ???????????? Don't leave me hanging out here ???
Anybody know the results of the Vegas WOO event ? It aired
late the other night and (as usual) I passed out before the end of
the "B" main (hate it when that happens).

I like the idea of a generic open wheel site. There's lots of
great subjects to be done and it's sure that the other
"specialized" sites won't welcome the discussion.
