No need to guess since I'm the designer/builder of "Tardis" (the name refers to
a sci-fi contraption which is larger on the inside than on the outside). It is
indeed a pram--an SOP design (ala Bolger) 5'10"LOA,40"beam,and sides (including
cabin)28" high. The dimensions were dictated by the size of the bed on my Toyota
pickup. It floats at its design waterline with only myself (200lbs+) aboard so
unless you have two very small people, it's a one-person-only craft. The
transoms and center bulkhead are of 3/8" MDO and most of the rest of the
structure is made from 1/8" luan doorskins (doubled or even tripled where more
strength is needed. The exterior is FG/epoxy covered --6oz on the bottom and 3oz
on sides and cabin top. Since it uses a leeboard (ala Michalak) the sole is wide
open and there is room to sleep ONE (with legs slightly bent (I'm 6'1"). It does
sail quite well but since the original tests I've replaced the end-plate rudder
with a more conventional kick-up rudder blade for better low speed control.
There are many pictures at the Eastern Messabout Yahoo group both in the
"Tardis" folder and the June 3,4,5 Elk Neck Messabout folders.

Then you need to look pass the paint job. If you do this you will see the the

I HAVE SAID IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN, GOD IS ANGRY AT WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO CHANGE OR TAKE OUT!!!!  That’s why all of these terrible things are happening in the world.  SO, IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG IN YOUR LIFE YOU ASK GOD, WHY ME!  After reading this you’ll know why!!!!!!!!!

Apparently the White House referred to Christmas Trees as Holiday Trees for the first time this year which prompted CBS presenter, Ben Stein, to present this piece which I would like to share with you. I think it applies just as much to many countries as it does to America ...

The following was written  by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday  Morning   Commentary.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every  single one of my ancestors was Jewish.  And it does not bother me  even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled  trees, Christmas trees.  I don't feel threatened.  I don't feel  discriminated against. That's what they are, Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a  bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me.  I don't think they are  slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto.  In fact, I kind  of like it.  It shows that we are all brothers and sisters  celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that  there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach  house in Malibu .  If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me  as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting  pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting  pushed around for being Christians.  I think people who believe in  God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.  I have no  idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist  country.  I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it  being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it  another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship  celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God ?  I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too.  But  there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from  and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many  jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little  different:  This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's  intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter  was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could  God let something like this happen?' (regarding Hurricane Katrina)..   Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response.  She  said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for  years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our  government and to get out of our lives.  And being the gentleman He  is, I believe He has calmly backed out.  How can we expect God to  give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us  alone?'

In light of recent  events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.  I think it  started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a  few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we  said OK.  Then someone said you better not read the Bible in  school.  The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal,  and love your neighbor as yourself.  And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock  said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their  little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem  (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide).  We said an expert should know  what he's talking about.  And we said okay.

Now we're asking  ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right  from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their  classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think  about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.  I think it has  a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is  for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to  hell.  Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question  what the Bible says.  Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail  and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages  regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.  Funny how  lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace,  but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and  workplace.

Are you laughing  yet?

Funny how when you  forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list  because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you  for sending it.

Funny how we can be more  worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of  us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.

If not, then just discard  it.... no one will know you did.  But, if you discard this thought  process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is  in.

My Best Regards,   Honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein

I would like to build a Tubby to use with my 29 ft sailing boat as a service boat. I checked the files, photos and databases but couldn't find the drawings.
Is it possible to send me the link of the drawings ?

Selim: And to you also. Take a look in the Files area or
Attachment area. Also check out my photo album of my
Tubby build. Very simple  boat to build.
Take a sheet of 1/4 inch ACX and have 3 ft
cut of one end (laying down long way) this
piece will be the bottom. They run the 5ft long
X 4 ft section though a table saw so you end
up with 2- 15 inch X 48 inch pieces (sides)
Don't cut the 3d piece as this will end up being
the bow and transom. The extra material
will be nice to have so as to lay over apair of
saw hourse ( see photo)

Then build away

Hello Selim,,

I am the designer and owner of the group welcome.

If you go to the photo section look for (A – Tubby plans) make plan picture
large by using the function above the picture for size.
Or go to the file section and look for (planz for boyak and tubby word doc) has
info,,, or talk to Greg on the members forum here,, he`s an expert on Tubby. He
has built one and would be all good with answering some questions along with
myself on your build.

Please take photos and send them to us, getting photos from members is awesome.

Cheers
Phil.

Ken,

Sorry to be so late on this, but I do get different results. What about  8 x 8 x 96 inches, or rather .75 x .75 x 8. That's 4.5 cubic feet, a little short of 300 pounds to swamping. That's the same capacity as many small canoes, Atkin Mouseboats, and other one sheeters. Just steer clear of Grand Manan.

6144 / 1728  = 3.555... x62= 220.4 lbs is a quick guesstimate of its swamp capacity.
thats likely a fair estimate for the dimensions I'm seeing in its plan.
not knocking it, I think its a cute idea, but isnt adult size capable.

looking again the bow are 6" and transoms 12".. so..
8x8x8=512..x8 linear ft of pontoons=4096
4096 / 1728 = 2.37 cu ft x62= about 147 lb.. and hull weight deducted from that..

yes I wanna kick myself! .. but thats what I'm seeing with it, darnit!!

small boats, anything joining sheeting I like to use about 2-1/2" wide of the same stuff.
aka: butt blocks, good stuff as long as the panel isnt gonna have any hard curve in it.
butt blocks to the inside, fiberglass taped outside over the butted join.
doing real scarph joints on 1/4" panel you'll probably lose 1"+ of length too, it isnt impossible but it'd probably be much more difficult to do a smooth join.

side panel to bottom type joints, I prefer inside chine logs and glass tape + resin outer.
a quart of polyester resin and a 1 yard pack of cloth cut into strips for tape is enough to tape all the seams and a couple resin coats to the whole outside of something small..
it isnt the best, epoxy IS better, but regular polyester resin is a quick grab at about any local hardware or auto parts shop. the 20 bucks more can sure help a project last..
and it isnt near as sensitive to UV like epoxy, so it can be left "wood lookin" after a good 3 or 4 coats outside, and 3 or 4 coats poly-varnish inside.

This is the simplest comprehensive summary of joining plywood I have seen.

http://www.pdgoose.com/plans/joints/index.htm

done to show how to make joins for making 12 feet sheets out of 8 feet sheets
but the principles are the same if doing a split side design like those on
Hannus boatyard

Links to Hannus boatyard and much more interesting one sheeter reading here:

Are you a member of the onesheetwonders@yahoogroups.com because the pictures are there of the build from the form that he set up to build it on with his two boys to include cutting out the pieces gluing them up and finishing plus launching all in steps that show the steps he took.  After reading Gavin's book and seeing the pictures I think even I could build one.

Hello all

Long time without a post.

I've been working out how to display plans and building sequences by building
models to explain. Neptune skiff photos uploaded, a more comprehensive revamp of
this little boat and other plans and new additions will follow when time allows.

Once again sounding like a broken record - photos of one sheet boats????????????
anyone building, we have new members joining all the time and yet no photos
coming in????????? If anyone has built one of my designs please post a photo to
me or here in the photo section thanks.

HI Jack,

Thnx for sharing, the Neptune looks like a neat little boat. I have all the
sheet cut and the 12ft 2x4's necessary for Ken' Canoe/Kayak (see in Photos
section). At this time, I need the garage cleaned out to give me actual building
room. Will post pics when I get that far.

Back to lurk mode,

The most important thing is... what is the intended use? A one sheet
boat is good for getting started, but not if you want to take your
kids out for a sail or something.

Thomas,

I figured a one sheet boat would be a good place to start since I have never
built one before, so I guess the purpose of this boat is to learn and hopefully
it will float for a while.

Once I know what I am doing I plan to build another, bigger boat that I can take
out with the kids.

Thanks

Don

Hi Mike

Thnx for sharing, Neptune Skiff is going to be a popular choice im thinking over
time. Cant wait until someone trys her out.

Great news about your build, will be checking photo section, if you need any
advice post here on the forum, there are some great boat building brains here.

Its been a bit of a desert here for a while not to much action for a while so
good news to see the forum kicking into gear again and new photos to share.

Good luck Mike.

Hi Don

I`m Phil the group owner moderator welcome. PD Racers are heavy not to portable,
great stable sailors but not the best to row about.

Depends what you want your boat for

Sail?
Rowing?
Motor?

Depends on your skill level? ease of design to build?

I of coarse would recommend one of the designs here, because its for the good of
the group and myself to see and discuss one sheet wonders here.
At the end of the day, its important to build a boat not for intended use by
others but yourself. I've built boats that i thought i would take others for a
ride and allowed for comfort, but i ended up 99% of the time sitting in it alone
doing my own thing and didn't really need the extra space.
  I'm a big fan of build x2 - 1 person capacity boats rather than x1 - 2 person
capacity boats. Also boats should be portable and as light weight as possible.
Let us know a bit more and we can help you out if you want?

Cheers
Phil.

Hi Don,

The easiest boat to build would be a BOJAK – a 3 panel canoe kayak, there is a
step by step building sequence in the photo section and plans.

- You only have 3 panels to cut

- 1 sheet of plywood, rails and 2 supports, cheapest to build in material
cost

- Stitch and glue for ease of the build

- can be built open or use scrap pieces of plywood to make covers, see varients
of the design in the photo section

Cheers
Phil.

Phil,

I am looking for a sail boat. I am bigger guy so it needs to be able to hold a
decent amount of weight. I am a little over 300 lbs.

I am not experienced at all with boat building or wood working for that matter.

Thanks

Don

While there may be one sheet sail designs appropriate for a 300lb man, I'd also suggest the Duckworks or Clark Craft sites as resources for plans.

http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans.htm

http://www.clarkcraft.com/

There are many designs on both sites, but you need to be conscious about what you choose to build.  It would be a shame if your 1st boat didn't handle well or was unsafe after all the time and effort of building. Pick a boat with 2-adult capacity that can be sailed single-handed.

Can folks more familiar with One Sheet designs offer suggestions?

Best,

Don

Pluto pram or Norsk would be the only one sheeter here i could recomend, or you
could try a Bolger Big Tortoise design, instant Bolger boats are a good way to
start.

Or I have a easy to build range of jon boats called Dragonfly`s. They are basic
to build - cut 2 side panels then wrap a sheet of 4/6mm over the sides, no
bevels or joins on the hull, stable in protected waters and can carry a big guy
and gear no problem. The link is here for that group and my web site for further
info.

Cheers
Phil.
