I recently came across a reference to a song that teaches the states,
their capitols, and the river they are on. I've been trying to track it
down and most people don't get back the second line. I finally located
the words in this song in a book in the Project Gutenberg. I finally
found the words, but have no idea what the tune was. If you do, please
share. Go to this link
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/11722/11722-h/11722-h.htm

and scroll down to lesson XX.

Our historical society (Marshall County, Iowa) is restoring a country school to it's original 1913 appearance. If you can help us in any of the following areas we'd appreciate it: (haven't had any luck on-line)

1. reference to date country school desks

2. where to buy a stove similar to the one used in our school-it was a "circulating heater" (jacketed stove which vents outside air into
the school so pupils will be healthier)-we've talked with antique and reproduction stove people, to no avail.

3. where to buy an antique or reproduction globe - 1900 to 1913

4. where to buy an antique or reproduction U.S. &/or world wall map (to roll up inside our hanging map box)

Maybe I'll see you at the Mount Vernon, Iowa Country School Conference October 6-7.

Thank-you,
Julie

No, I haven't seen anything in print, or on the net, yet. It was announced
at last year's conference in Perry.

Subject: 6th Annual One-Room School Conference
robansuefarm
Send Email Send Email

This past week was the 6th annual National One-Room School Conference. This time
it was hosted once again by the Blackwell Education Museum at Northern Illinois
University in DeKalb. This was the conference’s second trip to DeKalb, as the
first full-fledged conference was held there. The Blackwell Education Museum is
certainly worth seeing with an incredible range of books and artifacts about
schools available. In addition, they had put together a collection of fairly
recent one-room school books for perusal.
It was a great conference and the main complaint I heard was that they packed
so much in that there wasn’t much chance to grab people to follow up, catch up,
or just absorb everything.
If you have been to one of the previous conferences you’ll be familiar with
some of the speakers, though they mostly brought new subjects. For example, Bill
Sherman spoke on the history of the Pledge and Pam Stover talked about a
particular radio show that was designed for use in one-room schools. Other
people were brand new to the conference, with a small, but strong grouping of
people talking about active one-room or small schools and the pedagogy methods
used. Another group of new people were the ones who’ve been working on an
exhaustive catalog of the one-room schools of DeKalb County. Their work will be
in a new book appearing very shortly and I for one have filled out my order
form. The preview was fascinating for everything they intend to include.
Wed’s bus tour was very comfortable in 2 tour buses. In a precedent breaking
move the tour was filled with stories that took place in schools, but
concentrated on former sites of schools and schools that were now homes. We were
allowed into 4 school – houses and it was really interesting to see how the
different owners had adapted the schools. They almost all had original
blackboards in the basement and stories about how it was used as part of the
school. One in particular had the remains of a coal bin, a cob bin, and an area
where they had a table for eating dinner (meaning the noon meal for the city
people in the group.)
Other people who attended please add your comments for the benefit of those
people who didn’t get to go.

The Country School Association of America (CSAA) was founded this June
at the 6th annual national one-room school conference. The mission of
the CSAA is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the
country schooling experience. An annual conference brings together
individuals (museum staff, volunteers, teachers/faculty/students,
preservationists, historians, interested citizens, and active
teachers) to exchange ideas and resources. A listserv devoted to
country schooling (oneroom at Yahoo Groups) has been developed to
facilitate networking. Please consider becoming a Charter member. If
you decide to join us and help support our efforts, please send $25
(full membership) or $10 (student membership) to our CSAA treasurer:
Mark Dewalt
3063 Colony Ridge Dr.
Gastonia, NC 28056.
The Seventh Annual Conference is scheduled at the same time next year
(June 18-20) in Nashua, New Hampshire. Susan Fineman is the program
and site chair for this event. Become a Charter member. The website
is at:
http://www.countryschoolassociation.org/

Future plans include awarding an annual prize to the outstanding
paper/publication on some aspect of country schools, a grant program
to encourage the preservation of country school buildings for
educational programs, a national survey of country school museums
(including colleges and universities which offer instructional
programs dealing with country schooling) and an electronic newsletter
published a minimum of twice a year .
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Richard
Lewis richard.lewis-1@... . Send an e-mail to Richard to get a
brochure.

I just added the link to the association's website to the links
section of the listserv's homepage under organizations.

The Wisconsin Historical Society's Board of Curators has approved the
acquisiton by donation of a one-room school house just outside of
Neillsville, WI (central Wisconsin). The brick school house, built in
1915, was attended in the early 1920s for a short-time by an
individual who became a major eastern real estate entrepreneur. He
purchased the property several years ago and asked the Wisconsin
Historical Society if they would like the property. Following
negotation the individual agreed to restoration of the property,
installation of septic system, ramp for disabilities, etc. per Society
requirements. He is also establishing an endowment to cover the
operating costs of the site.

The Society, under its historic sites division, will take over the
property; design interpretation plans and open the site in the spring
of 2007.

I will take over supervision of the site in addition to my site duties
as director of the H.H. Bennett Studio & History Center in Wisconsin

I will be interested in the experience of other one-room school house
museums and their interpretive and operational plans.

We have not as yet placed a security system in the one-room school
house we will be receiving from the donor. My experience with system
systems in the past leads me to the realization that it is difficult
(if notimpossible) to wire a historic facility without some
visability. Steps can (and should be) taken to minimize the visual
obtrusion. System design and budget will determine the extent of your
system. Sprinkler heads (if you have a sprinkler system); smoke, heat
and movement sensors cannot be totally hidden.

Our only security is two security lights (dusk to dawn) and heavy wire screen coverings on the building.  We are 2 miles from town just outside the city limits.  Our local city police come down and turn around in our drive, thereby keeping an eye on the building.  Local farmers also alert me when something seems out of place or the lights no longer work.  In 18 years, we have only had one BB go through one window, and last year, someone took one of the wire screens down, but did not break in.

I recently had some experience finding a vendor to replace a full window
unit for our schoolhouse that was struck by lightening. I initially
contacted Adam Architectural Wood Products(Adamarch.com) as I was told
they would do reproductions. I did not visit them in person but
communicated via phone and e-mail. I was disappointed that their
reproduction of a turn of the century (last century) window included
tilt out for easy cleaning! There is a company in Weston, Missouri -
Weston Millwork - that probably does amazing reproductions. They wanted
parts of the window to mill the frames and part exactly. Sounded great
but very expensive. We ended up with our own contractor building the
frame and ordering the sashes from a local lumberyard. The sashes are
basically barn window replacements. I do not know their supplier but if
interested let me know and I will try to get additional information.

I know volunteers are hard to find but there may be a wood worker who
may be able to help with rebuilding if you can find the sashes. Our
contractor even put the weights and pulleys in.

Good luck.

Sorry we can't help you now-we'll be developing our 1913 reenactment curriculum during the next school year.

Subject: [oneroom] Interpretation Plans

We are beginning the process of developing an interpretation plan for
Reed School (1915-1954) as a site for the Wisconsin Historical
Society. We are looking for written interpretation plans that have
been developed for other one-room schools. We would appreciate the
sharing of your plan! It will certainly help us! Thanks. Dale
Williams, Wisconsin Historical Society.

This is mostly for Iowa listmembers. Earlier this year someone requested
this from the Johnson County Historical Society. I eventually got the
words so here they are.

I am amazed at how many times people ask for this verse. It was supplied
to me by a workshop participant.

Iowa Counties

My home is in Iowa,
Westward toward the setting sun,
Between two mighty rivers,
Where crystal waters run.

It has towns and it has cities,
It has many noble streams.
It has nine and ninety counties,
And I’ll now repeat their names.

Lyon, Osceloa, Dickinson,
Where Spirit Lake we see,
Emmet, Kossuth, Winnebago,
Worth is near Lake Albert Lea.

Mitchell, Howard, Winnesheik,
And Allmakee so fine,
Make eleven Northern counties
On our Minnesota line.

Clayton, Dubuque, Jackson,
Clinton, Scott and Muscatine,
Less, Louisa, and Des Moines
On our eastern line are seen.

Van Buren, Davis, Appanoose,
Decatur, Ringgold, Wayne we spy,
Taylor, Page and Fremont
On Missouri’s border lie.

Pottawottamie, Harrison, Mills,
Monroe, Woodbury, Plymouth, Sioux,
Are all the counties that upon
The borders of our state we view.

Next we point you to O’Brien,
Palo Alto, too, and Clay,
Hancock, Cerro Gordo, Floyd,
Now see Chickasaw we pray.

Fayette, Bremer, Butler, Franklin,
Then upon the map we see;
Wright, Humbolt, Pocahontas,
Buena vista, Cherokee.

Ida, Sac, Calhoun and Webster,
Hamilton with name so rare,
Hardin, Grundy, Black Hawk
And Buchanan, Delaware.

Jones, Linn, Benton, Tama,
Marshall, Story, Crawford, Carroll,
Boon, let us not your patience weary;
We will have them all told soon.

Cedar, Greene, Johnson, Iowa,
Poweshiek by the same,
Next are Jasper, Polk and Dallas
(Names of Presidential fame.)

Guthrie, Audubon, Shelby, Cass,
Warren, Madison and Adair,
Marion and Mahaska,
Keokuk, too, is there.

Henry, Jefferson and Wapello,
Monroe, Washington we missed.
Lucas, Clark, Union, Adams
And Montgomery fill the list.

Written by Mr. Quenton Rogers, schoolmaster, Cedar Rapids, 1860.
