This topic happens to be of great interest to me.  As a retired teacher and a long-time fan of LIW's books and other historical American fiction, I am eager to learn more about the history and operation of one-room school houses.

Hi,

I think this list will be very helpful to those of us seeking
information.

We are currently working on setting up a one room school in the
Allison,Iowa, area to show what school was like back in the 1920s.
We are trying to find out if those dreaded eighth grade examinations
were given on an all state basis or whether they were county driven.
We found the Kansas example on the internet, but haven't found
anything about Iowa yet. I took the eighth grade examination in
1951,
my sister took it in 1947. We had to travel to New Hampton and the
test were given in the courtroom. If they were trying to impress us,
they certainly did.
We are interested in when the tests started and what they contained.
I assume they ended when the one room schools ceased to exist. We
would like to find a copy if possible. Thanks for your time. LaVonne

I don't know about Iowa, but I'm currently researching schools in
Kingsbury County, South Dakota. Just today, I came across
announcements in a county newspapers in 1895 for eighth grade
examinations to be given at the county seat (bring pen, bring paper,
etc.). Questions were supplied by the State Superintendent of Schools.
Afterwards, it was reported that 49 students had passed.

I've heard people say that the Kansas exam online is a fake???

It does seem like the Kansas exam would be too hard for eighth graders
and for me, too. My cousin's husband wanted to go to a Lutheran high
school in Mankato, Minnesota. He and two of his classmates traveled
to Mankato and took the test. Only one passed the test and that was
back in the late thirties. I guess I had better try to reach the Iowa
State Superintendent of Schools which probably has been changed to a
Department of Education position. We are compiling a booklet for a one
room school reunion and thought it would be fun to include it. I
think this list is going to be very helpful to many people. Thanks
for your comments. LaVonne Edeker in Iowa

The eighth grade exams given in Iowa were tough by today's standards.
Doubt any of the kids today would pass - probably take one look at the
first question and quit! The Adair County Historical Society have
original copies of several years of test. Not sure we have the
answers! We also have the school registers indicating not all students
passed.

All this talk about Eighth Grade exams really makes me mount my hobby horse.  As a retired teacher who was in the classroom for more than 30 years, I watched the deterioration of standards first hand.  The "dumbing down" of America is truly terrifying.  There is so much emphasis on extra-curricula activities, sports in particular, that learning has become secondary.  I could go on for hours about the negative influences of television, video games and whatever else kids are into now, but I won't.  Standardized testing is a joke.  In the earlier days of one-room school houses and even graded schools, it seems to me that learning was of paramount importance.  Unfortunately, I don't see any hope of returning to that state.

I would be dubious of using the "Kansas" example as actually representing 8th
Grade an examinination.

Nothing on its face actually says that it is an 8th grade exam. And
contextually, one of the math problems seems more aimed at a teacher than a
graduating student, asking the examined to calculate amounts related to school
expenses and income. I'd guess that the exam is more likely to be one for
prospective school teachers than their students.

As for Ms. Ganz's contentions on the "dumbing down" of modern education, I'm
afraid that we may be comparing apples and oranges. Given the much higher and
more accepted rate of historical students dropping out, the much broader
expectations on our students in science, health, computors, driver's education,
and social studies, and the much broader cross-section of society being served
by the educational system...I am not sure that most immediate comparisons
between early and present education can be treated this simply.

Hi Lavonne,

I have several Iowa 8th grade exams from various years. I used the
music questions as
part of my dissertation and I know that I have them in the computer
if you would want to
use them. Unfortunately, I am leaving tomorrow for the summer and
won't have time to
sort through my boxes of stuff to find them.

If you are in a hurry, I know that I got two of them from the
One-Room School museum on
the University of Northern Iowa Campus. Terry was one of the
curators at the time, and
Sue is fantastic to work with.

I also have exams from Indiana and maybe Pennsylvania. Regulations
varied by state, with
some states giving the same exam throughout and others were set up by
county or
district. Some newspapers published the questions after the exams
were given. Check the
historical societies, because you can find amazing things in the
county histories.

Sometimes you will get a good report from the Superintendant of Rural
Schools. Jessie
Parker held this position in Iowa for many years. Some of her papers
and bulletins are
held at the Iowa Historical Society in Des Moines.

And for those of you from the one-room school conferences....is there
a conference this
year? I didn't hear anything, so I booked a research trip to Germany!

Susan...thanks for setting up this list!

Pam Stover

PS Lavonne, my dissertation focused on music in one-room schools in
Iowa, Illinois, and
Wisconsin and due to lack of data in music (specifically), I have
broadened it to include
one-room schools in general. My focus time in right when you want to
set your school.
Please email me off-list if you want some additional info.

I taught in McAuley school, 45 miles west of Chicago for thirty
years. It was the last fully recognized school in the midwest,
closing in 1989, when I retired. I also founded the Pioneer Sholes
school museum,(www.pionersholesschool.org)in St Charles, Ill which
has been functioning successfully since 1978.
It is delightful tobe able to connect with those of you who are
keeping this history alive.

At Sholes, we have BOUND copies of the eighth grade required exams
given by our County Superintendent, it you might wish to examine them.

I also have several song books used in my own one room school, which
I attended in 1938-41, at Lakeside School near Oshkosh, WI. (There is
a story about my exceptional teacher, Always Amber, under the sholes
Website.

Some of my former students are in the process of trying to get
McAuley School made inteo a useable museum, too. Looking forward to
hearing from some of you... Fay Stone

I live in Keokuk County, located in southeast Iowa.  I attended rural school for 8 years and also taught the same rural school for one abbreviated year prior to the Korean Conflict.  Currently, I am assisting in the maintenance and support of this same school which is named Lancaster. The school closed in 1964 but the furnishings mostly remain intact with a modest museum quality. Our supporting members number about 100.

My message of concern today is the reporting of a fire of unknown origin May 9, 2005 that destroyed a restored one-room rural schoolhouse in Keokuk County about 7 miles northeast of Sigourney, IA. The school, known as White Oak # 5 in Plank Township was located on its original site which was now included in the Belva Deer Park Recreation Center. The restoration of the schoolhouse by the Keokuk County Conservation Board used donated money to purchase the school and raised additional funds to fix the old school up.  The Ottumwa, IA unit of the National Guard assisted in the building restoration work.  In 1993 artist Greg Bordignon painted the White Oak School  for a painting called "School's Out" that was used as a Pheasant's Forever fundraising effort.  After restoration, the school has been used with the outdoor classroom project put on by the Keokuk County Conservation Board.

The loss of this school removes another of the very few rural schools that we had remaining in Keokuk County. This very visible and well visited school had continued to serve an important role for the youngsters of our county.

The following is part of one of about 40  3rd grade student letters to the editor of  the Sigourney News-Review that appeared in the May 25 edition:  "I'm so sorry that the little schoolhouse out at Belva Deer Park burned down.  It was a tradition for all the third grade classes to go there.  We went just a little bit after school started.  It was great to have a chance to see what it was like when other kids were in school and how kids had their desks.............." (Meridith)

If you have any questions let me know.         Thanks, George W. House

Yes, I do (at least a little bit).

A few years ago, I was teaching gifted children in two very rural downeast
Maine towns. In the same school union was a one-room school -- on an island
five miles out to sea, accessible only by mailboat twice a week.

This school had several extremely gifted children, and the superintendent
asked me if I would be willing to travel out there one day per month to
consult with the teacher, teach mini-courses, and help adapt the curriculum
for these kids.

Now, traveling on a mailboat to a one-room island school sounds idyllic when
it's July and sunny and warm, but let me tell you, there's nothing *quite*
like traveling there in the middle of a snowstorm in February!!!!! (I get
seasick anyway, so I'd always take a double dose of dramamine before the
mailboat left, but I really thought I wasn't going to make it that day!)

The island didn't have internet access (and neither did the mainland, unless
it was a long distance call, at that time), so whenever I needed to get
anything out there to the kids or the teacher in between the one day a month
I went there, I had to contact the captain of a missions boat that made
regular trips to all the islands. Thus, I was able to get curriculum
materials and books to them once in awhile between the times I was actually
there.

Maine still has a number of small island schools, so there is an annual
Island Schools Conference each year put on by the Island Institute. Many of
these schools are one-room schools.

It was a really fascinating experience to do this consulting one day a month
and I'm really glad I did it, even if I did get seasick!

I tried printing the curriculum, but was successful only on the first 6 pages.  What I was able to print and read looks like a good guideline for the teacher's in our area who use our historic village and schoolhouse.  Could you send a copy to me at Marion County Historical Village, 1145 McKimber Street, Knoxville, Iowa 50138  Att: Kathleen B smith, Curator.  Let me know costs involved and we will send necessary funds.  Thanks!
Our schoolhouse was moved to our village from the rural area SW of Knoxville.  It is equipped with desks, books, etc and is used quite often by school classes in this area.  I attended a rural school for the first 8 years of my schooling in the 50's and have many good memories from those years.

Subject: [oneroom] one room experience?

Does anyone on this listserv actually have experience in teaching in a
one room school? There is a possibility that I may be doing so in the
not-too-distant future, and I'd appreciate any assistance you can give me.

To David, Dawn, Deb,

I have sent a message direct to your email addresses, but don't see it listed on the board.

I have thirty years of teaching in a One Room school forty-five miles west of Chicago. It was the last one fully recognized in Illinois and the midwwest.

I went to a one room school as a child, and took the Rural Education Couse at UW (they no longer offer this) Then I began my teaching experience. I'd like to know more about your propects in this rea and will help anyway I can.

I don't think messages send directly to someone would appear on the board.

I've been contacted by a church that is interested in expanding their
preschool to a PK-8 school. They realize that numbers won't be very
great the first few years, so one teacher will have to have most grades.
The current PS teacher would most likely take PK and K, possibly also
1st. I'd have the rest, probably less than 10 kids.

I've taught multi-grade classrooms before, but only two grades (5th/6th
or 7th/8th) for the entire day. I've taught single subject to three
grades at once. I did sub in a 3-grade room a few times, but there the
teacher had everything laid out for me.

My question deals with time management: how do I try to divide the day
in such a way that all students get some instruction time with me? I can
combine two grades for some subjects, but if I'm dealing with, say, five
grades, that still is likely to have me teaching two or three classes
for just that subject. Should I try to do only half the subjects on any
one day, and double up on what is covered on that day (A/B days)? Do I
have older students work pretty much independently, coming to me only
for tests and help as I can fit them in, so that I can spend more time
with the littler ones? Suggestions and ideas are welcome!

Hi, David.

To get an idea of how to manage your time, perhaps you could look at some school teacher's lesson plans from country schools.  I know I've got a few around here in our collection, if you would be interested.

I sure will.  I am leaving town today on business, but will get it to you next week.  Don’t worry about costs.

This is fewer than I have for language arts and I believe
VERY manageable.

This week I presented at the ALHFAM (Association of Living History
Farms and Museums) and about the state of the one-room school museum
in America. I've uploaded my handout into the files section. You just
go to the group's webpage at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oneroom and
click on the Files link on the lefthand side of the page. This is a
summary of my basic points and citations for the books I thought I
might mention.
