Description

The Oneida Nation government destroyed the home of Danielle Schenandoah Patterson and her children on 2002 October 22. She and other traditionalists among the Oneida Indians of central New York, with the support of people like those in this group who camped out around her home, resisted her dislocation for more than a year. Danielle had led the resistance to the Nation's illegitimate ruler. Arthur Raymond Halbritter, dismissed by the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) for making a casino deal without the knowledge of his people, remains recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs as the representative of the Oneida. Halbritter makes new laws at will and created a wholly non-native security force and a court run by non-natives to keep control. Danielle was assaulted by security officers who came to inspect her home and was accused of assaulting them; eventually she was arrested and kept in a Pennsylvania jail and she had to agree to let her home be knocked down to have the charges dropped. Eleven homes were 'inspected', condemned, and destroyed before Danielle began resistance. The focus now passes to her sister, Diane Shenandoah, and the remaining five families on the traditional and sovereign Oneida land. To punish people who oppose him, Halbritter cuts them from nation membership, benefits, and access to Oneida public buildings. In short, the Oneida (or Onyota'a:ka, "People of the Standing Stone") traditionals are denied their rights, as Oneidas and U.S. citizens, to a measure of freedom, democracy, and justice. They need direct action, money, and public support to help resist dictatorship. Read the archive and, if you haven't yet, sign up to become part of our discussion on ways to continue to help the Oneida gain self-determination.
