Subject: Article about Olivia digital mode slated for December QST magazine
garylinnrobi...
Send Email Send Email

For anyone who may be interested there will be an article in the
December 2008 issue of QST about the Olivia digital mode. It is a
general information article and it is hoped that it will help create
more Olivia activity on the ham bands

The article is called "Ghost QSO's -- Olivia Returns from the Noise"
Subtitle "Olivia -- the magic mode"

Worth reading (though I'm biased since I wrote it) if you are at all
interested in quality digital qso's!

Also - On my web site I have posted versions (based off of FLDigi
3.03AB) of FLDigiROL - my own modified version. There are binaries
for WIndows, Linux (compiled on Kubuntu 8.04), and source code
available. These are beta versions and have very little in the way of
documention hi hi!

They will be updated in the future when FLDigi stabilizes and not so
many bug fix and updates come out so often.

I have made modifications and added features that suit me so it may
NOT suit anyone else's taste. But they are available for anyone to
look at on : http://home.roadrunner.com/~rolswana/

Just for info: We have moved with our quite regular activity in Olivia
500/16 in the evenings now: from about 20 / 21 UTC at 3581 USB + 1500
Hz (former frequency was about 3586 USB +1500 Hz). Frequencies and
times may vary (e.g. 3583 khz) and activity will depend on other
duties
and the availability of different group members as well. There are
always at least two or three stations qrv at the moment, however.

There is a good tool to monitor the activity in Olivia (or other
digital modes) in Europe: The Web SDR of the University of Twente in
the Netherlands gives you a good overview of the relevant portions of
80 and 40 m; look at

http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/

Not only DX, Chris ... At my portable qth during the week I have
extremely poor antenna conditions (a 15 m GFK Mast is still too low
to bring a wire above the houses surrounding me at all four sides)
but I am able to have Olivia qso's with very good copy at very low
S/N levels. Therefore the weak signal capability makes the mode a
very good choice for qrp stations or those with limited antenna
capabilities.

Hello folks,

What you find with this ‘broken link’ is that there are a couple of ‘spaces’ in the URL in Juergen’s original message. When you paste the URL into your browser, you may notice ‘%20’ in two places in the URL…these are the spaces.

You can simply delete both %20 and then hit the ‘enter’ button or follow this link…

Hi All,

Even during the sunspot minimum my skeds with DJ2UK on 30m LP (around
0630 UTC) are very reliable. We use 4/250 or when condx are particularly
poor 8/250. Beats PSK31 by miles!

BTW what time were the 20m openings Chris?

Hello Omar,

Chris has already responded with a new link. Hopefully you will now
be able to open the Web SDR.

I hope I can see your call next time when I will be home again (on
Saturday evening I will be qrv from my home station which is much
better equipped as you know).

Have heard some U.K. stations in last 6 months but not very many.
Worked G1GIL on August 15th on 14.075 - 500/16
On October 7th I worked 2 stns - G4MLA on 1000/32 at 14.106
and G8HYP on 500/16 at 14.075

I do NOT have a high profile station here but do hear some G stations
but hear more Germany and Italian on Olivia.

Hi everyone

I listen on 10.132.9Mhz + 1500Hz usually from 1100z to 1300Z. Work a
few European stations. I try to check the frequency through the
day/night as time permits.
I visited PEI [VY2] this summer and called many hours getting only a
few contacts.
For such a great mode there is certainly a lack of activity.

Hi John and all

I think you will find us Europeans are not allowed that low on the 30m
band. I have from the RSGB Band Plan 10.100 to 10140 is cw 200 Hz max
bandwidth and 10.140 to 10.150 All narrow band modes 500 Hz max
bandwidth. So I have a look at about 10.142 +, which is were I try
calling CQ.
Your right about a great mode, hope to see you on there.

I'm QRV most weekday mornings between 0900-1100UTC, either PSK or Olivia, on
20/40m. Please call if you want to try a QSO [eQSL and LoTW available].

I'm happy to QSY modes to other exotica [MFSK, Hell, Throb - MultiPSK
installed].

Hi Dick,

Just noticed this message, went on 20m and copied your QSO with OH2HN,
unfortunately only the local end of it. I have an S3 noise level here
at the moment and an antenna that probably does you no favours!

I have had a couple of QSOs with Europe on Olivia in the last six
months. I am awaiting a new audio interface box that will give me
better results than the home-brew one. Then some work on the antenna,
a few sunspots and who knows!

Will certainly look out for you when I get properly QRV.

Hi Jim,

Just out of curiosity: What DO you expect from a commercially built
interface box, that a home-brew one could not deliver? After all AF
impedance matching and PTT are pretty basic tasks, well within the
capabilities of below average talent home-brewers.

I have heard of many complaints about commercial interfaces that try
hard to make a simple task look difficult...

Some free time!

I agree totally with your thinking.

I lashed one up an interface with
a couple of transformers out of the junk box on strip board. It works
fine. But found I never quite got round to putting it in a box, nor to
breaking into the CAT RS232 cable to do the PTT. Twisting the ends of
the TX wire together or toggling the dangling switch is not ideal
(though perhaps the slow change over of Olivia means it is not
unreasonable on this mode!) So I have done a lot of listening and had
very few (data) qsos.

Since I have Scots ancestry (frugle, not mean), I did design my own
pcb with the required opto isolator, a couple of transformers and
audio and 9 pin D type connectors on it. Somehow never found the time
to etch and drill it what with other commitments (mostly re-building
XP systems for customers). So I decided to place an order with a local
firm who had made up all the cables.

Now I just need to find time to get the new I/F out of its cardboard
box and connect it. And then that better antenna so I can hear the
antipodes!

Hope to see you on the screen!

Hi Jim,

Yes I know the feeling if one wants to make it all too perfect in
homebrewing... A friend of mine has been working on his super-duper
homebrew interface for more than 6 months now, and he is still not QRV.
I cobbled mine together using construction techniques of the 60s - no
PCB, some soldering lugs, a small metal case and it took me less than 2
days. That was around 6 years ago, and all my digital QSOs have been
done with this one. In case somebody is interested - schematics and
descriptions on: http://ilgonis.orgfree.com/digiar.htm

glad you joined and are on Olivia
now we just need old Sol to give us some sun spots for HF prop.
Olivia works well on VHF/UHF also for those long ragchews with the weak signal qsb simplex,  the higer speeds make it almost like voice modes

If permissible, could anyone with experience with the Tigertronics
Signalink USB please give a review ? Does it work any better than the
usual built-in
computer soundcards ?

Thanks

Looking forward to trying Olivia on 160 meters.

It works well, and it has a couple of  advantages -- the system sounds don't play through the tigertronics usb --
they play through your regular sound card.  So you won't inaverdently transmit operating system sounds (like windows
startup tones, etc) through your radio.  Plus, it electrically isolates your radio from your computer --
no ground loops to worry about.  And, it has front panel input and output level adjustments, as well as a
transmit hang time adjustment -- which your computer sound card doesn't have.

Another advantage is that you do not have to continually readjust the
system volume sliders to proper levels when going from your digi
software to other programs. Also, if you do adjust levels from one
mode to another it is a lot easier to reach over and turn the knob on
the SignaLink rather than having to open the Window$ sound mixer.
Another advantage too, is adjustable delay in keying. I have found
with Olivia the transmitter occasionally momentarily un-keys during
the transmission if I don't turn up the delay a bit. I don't need the
delay with PSK31.
