Re: New here and in a pickle!

Well I can tell you our experience with Risperdal was excellent until the
meddling over controling DHR group got our son taken off of it, and we have been
fighting tooth and nail to get him put back on it. Instead they want to leave
him on the same meds he has been on the last 5 years, that his body has adjusted
to and are not working. Medicaid really sucks because no one wants to deal with
perscribing him anything new.

My hubby and I came to the realization that if we dont work together we are
doing a dissevice to our other children by letting our son get away with
everything while the othe 3 are suffering with the attention he seems to think
he warrants all the time.

I will pray that your DH will see that he needs the medications. Our son has
been arrested 8 times for physical aggretion and it is not an easy thing to
handle. Please feel free to email if you need to vent I am glad to listen and
try to help if I can.

issues, but here's where I am in a bind. My DH is totally opposed to adding any
more meds and is adamant about not using Risperdal based on what he's read on
the Internet about its side effects. I love DH dearly, and we have what I would
consider to be a relatively strong 10+ year marriage; however, he has been
fighting me tooth and nail on everything related to DS's diagnoses since day
one. He is very "old school" when it comes to mental illness, believing that we
should be able to handle our DS without meds, and feeling as if it's a
reflection on his ability as a parent if we do not. He has been VERY slack about
attending appointments with me, having only been to one counseling session and
NO Ped. or Psych. visits. It took A LOT of discussion, arguing, and research for
him to even agree to put him on the Vyvanse. He feels that this is enough for DS
to get him through the day.

evening after DS's meds have worn off. The other night, his rage was so bad that
both DH and myself had to physically restrain him for close to 20 mins so he
wouldn't attack his brother. The Psych informed me that the Vyvanse is not meant
to treat the aggression symptoms of ODD, ONLY the attention issues with ADD,
which is why she prescribed the Risperdal. She also felt that the Risperdal
would help with the insomnia and appetite issues that the Vyvanse causes. So,
here I sit with the prescription for the Ris. on my kitchen counter, unfilled,
and a follow-up visit with the Psych scheduled for this coming week. Any words
of wisdom on how to handle this situation with my DH, and also any personal
experience with Ris. and its side effects would be greatly appreciated!

If you are not too sure about the risperdal, you may want to try clonodine.  My son is 51/2 and he had been on clonidine for several months now and it has...
