Why didn't Bensky call us and invite us as guests?? He must be aware of us.
Was anyone aware of the topic ahead of time? Did he invite the others? Or
did they swarm the station and take over?? Does anyone know Larry or want to
call him and ask? I don't necessarily think this is a visibility issue, but
Larry's bias.
Why is this posted to the Oakland Greens?
Oh yeah. Yes, I will coordinate an Oakland Tabling WG. But not till after
August 6.

County Councilor

I am not really very active but I have a friend who is quite sharp politically and would like to volunteer. Greg never responded when she offered to help in the past and she got discouraged. She is a great organizer and was well known in the Peace movement. Her name is Shirley Lens and her phone number is 510 330 7315. If it is possible have Rebecca get in touch with her. I know she would be a valuable asset. June Spero

It's sad to say, but, as was said on the show, he rarely sees Greens in
this county actively out here doing things except occasionally getting on
the radio. I would suggest that is the responsibility, first of the
County Council that hasn't done much since the election, and secondly all
of us who haven't volunteered or insisted that more happen. If we were an
active and vital force, the radio coverage would follow. Hopefully the
Oakland Greens will become just the kind of active force that's needed.
To that end I'd like to know if there is anyone interested in forming an
Oakland Greens "Tabling Working Group" to occasionally do some outreach
for the Green Party in Oakland.

Minutes to the first meeting of the Oakland Greens
June 26, 2001 7:00pm
Energy Crisis
Background
* Greens against deregulation since the beginning
* Not an energy shortage, but a democracy shortage
* Public power will be on ballot in San Francisco's next election
* East Bay also moving toward a vote for municipal power
* Quiet talks have begun to convince EAST Bay MUD (now just water)
to become a public power district as well
To Do
* An Energy Committee sign-up sheet was passed
* Berkeley is helping low income people with conservation (not just rebates)
- Who is sponsoring this? The city, PG&E?
- How can we help/get involved/implement the program in Oakland
- Global Exchange has made a Rebate Info Sheet (so have we. Merge
efforts?)
* Greens should get involved in growing anti-nuclear debate
Oakland Election
* Greens need a Jerry Brown alternative
* support Green issues like JUST CAUSE
* Wilson Riles for mayor (Greens not yet official endorser)
* ran in 1990 (outspent 4 to 1)
* nominated Jerry but has since been disappointed
* founder of Oakland CAN (Community Action Network)
* wants to implement neighborhood organizers
(side note: someone brought up John Russo's Lawyers here)
- Wilson is a progressive democrat
-one person expressed a need for a Green candidate in mayoral race
- another asked why Wilson is a Democrat if he has Green-like platform
- the need for coalitions of all kinds expressed (Democrats included)
- many other elections (Spring 2002) have no progressive or Green
candidate challenging the two party system
Emeryville Elections
* school district in debt, super intendent facing felony charges
* school board recall election August 28th
* need Green questionnaires sent to candidates
* could run somebody in official election (November 2001)
* sign up sheet passed around
Branch in Oakland?
* Alameda branch has been very successful (two years now)
* when asked, most were excited about prospect of Oakland Greens
* There was an attempt a few years back; to avoid repeating its failure the
following suggestions were made:
- Electoral Involvement (year-round)
- Direct Action
- Social/Cultural relevance
- Administrative structure
- Outreach
* How do we get new people involved and keep them active?
- BIG "Coming Out" party for Oakland Greens
~ celebrity speaker, press release
~ announce our name and major Oakland issues
~ invite local progressive groups
- real issues that will broaden the member base
- general meetings with all candidates running in all elections. "Put
them on the spot" and ask them, "How Green are you?"
- newsletter and Treasury (dues and/or newsletter subscription)
- email/mail minutes to all present (also 5,000 registered Greens in
Oakland, but we don't have all their email addresses. Call to get them?)
* Consensus reached: "Oakland Greens" is an appropriate name, but it could
be changed at a later date if the group agrees.
Organizational Committee
* Headed by Sheelah Weaver. Next meeting at her house.
- 2731 26th Avenue (off East 27th Street)
- 532-0994
- sheelahw@...
- meeting will be held on Monday July 30th at 7:00pm
- house accessible by Fruitvale BART
* to meet last Monday of each month because Oakland City Council meets
Tuesday and we should attend their meetings to observe and speak out
* Volunteers to organize next meeting
- Llyana
- Sylvia Levy, 655-6533
- Brent (also volunteered as webmaster for branch)
- Karen Engel, 465-5887 (can just make phone calls)

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE on WELFARE "REFORM" & VALUING CARING WORK
Welfare "reform" is being discussed in Congress again and decisions will be
made that affect all women. But every mother's right to welfare and decent
wages, and our children's right to our care, are not being considered,
either by Congress or by organizations claiming to represent us. Welfare
"reform" promotes uncaring, racism, homophobia and criminalization of women.
*Oppose welfare "reform" which forces us to leave our children for any
low-waged work. Oppose forced labor, increased poverty and homeless.
*Speak out for welfare as a woman's right and for welfare benefits to
reflect the full value of caring work.
*Results of the dialogue will be submitted to Congress as testimony.

CARERS' RIGHT TO PAYMENT, CHILDREN'S RIGHT TO CARE
Welfare 'reform', now up for reauthorization (review and renewal) in
Congress, has destroyed welfare as a right and entitlement. It puts
forward that caring for your own children has no value, and forces
women into a killing workday. It is forced labor and low-waged work
recruitment, and has widened the pay gap between women's and men's
wages. It results in more women and children living in poverty, which
means more of us will end up in prison.
Mothers and their children will be left with nothing when the clock
stops on their 60-month lifetime limit to receiving benefits. Money
is cut for women and children, but more is spent for Star Wars and
weapons for military action around the world. Caregivers are the heart
of the economy but along with our children always come last.
Welfare 'reform' is a racist attack; the majority of those on welfare
are women and children of color. It denies the work older women and
women with disabilities do caring for themselves and others, forces
lesbian women to name the father of their kids, forces marriage, puts
women at risk of violent relationships, discourages breastfeeding and
cuts benefits to immigrant women. It has destroyed what was every
woman's insurance policy against complete dependence and starvation.
Reauthorization is a chance to change welfare 'reform' but the voices
and demands of mothers who are suffering the most and who want the
right to care for their own children are not being heard. We want to
choose, not be forced, whether or not to work outside the home. It's
time for a change!
MOTHERING IS REAL WORK -- WE WANT REAL WAGES!
* * * * * * * * * * *
Every Mother is a Working Mother Network campaigns to establish that
raising children and caring work is work, and that the time mothers
spend raising children, and the economic value of their work be
included in our right to welfare and other resources. We campaign for
resources to enable a mother to raise her own children full-time or to
also work outside the home. We are a national multiracial grassroots
network from different situations. EMWM is coordinated by the Wages
for Housework Campaign

Greens,
This may be of interest to you, a training on building a muticultural
community sponsored by Just Cause Oakland. I have been involved with this
campaign to stop unfair evictions for quite a while and feel that we can
learn a lot from each other as we look for new ways to build coalitions
adressing all types of issues. The meetings are always open to new
participants.

Oakland Greens:
Here's something worth knowing about, perhaps getting involved with enough
to call your City Councilmember about...
--Leslie Dinkin
forwarded from Brian Kettenring <caacornsaro@...>
=======================================================================
Dear Friend of ACORN and Oakland Communities,
We are writing to ask your support for a critical piece of legislation
coming before the Oakland City Council. If you do not live in Oakland or
represent people who do, please forward this email to all Oakland or
Oakland-interested contacts.
On Tuesday, July 10th, at 10 am there will be a rally in support of
the proposed Oakland Anti-Predatory Lending Ordinance that will be heard
at the 10:30 am meeting of the Community and Economic Development
Committee (CEDA Committee). The rally will be on the front steps of
Oakland City Hall. This vote, we believe, will be the decisive vote in
that it will set the tone for further discussion on the ordinance, which
is scheduled for a first and second vote before the full City Council July
17th and July 24th.
If you can do nothing else please do two things:
1. Call the four members of the CEDA Committee before July 4th, ask them
to support the proposed Anti-Predatory Lending Ordinance. Feel free to
leave a voicemail if offices are closed:
Jane Brunner, District 1, Committee Chair, (510) 238-7001
Ignacio De la Fuente, District 5, Council President, (510) 238-7005
Nancy Nadel, District 3, (510) 238-7003
Dick Spees, District 4, (510) 238-7004
2. Submit a copy of the attached letter of support. Fax it to Councilman
De la Fuente and to ACORN (510) 436-6395. We will forward the letter to
other Councilmembers.
We invite you also to join us for the:
Rally and Committee Vote Against Predatory Lending
Tuesday, July 10
10:00 am
Oakland City Hall
In California, there were 170,000 subprime loans made in California in
1999. Fannie Mae estimates that as many as 50% of subprime borrowers were
actually eligible for a prime loan. In Oakland, hundreds of families are
coming forward who have been victimized by predatory lenders like
Household Finance or the Associates. They often have outrageous interest
rates over 12%, 15%, 20%, 25% or more, often have substandard credit
insurance financed into their loans without their full knowledge, often
have been flipped [a process of continuous refinancing without benefit to
the borrower], or have simply been ripped off in any number of ways. You
will find attached to this email the story of two victims of predatory
lending in Oakland. Also attached to this email is a fact sheet on the
Oakland ordinance.
Should the predatory lending ordinance pass, Oakland will join cities
like Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, and the State of North Carolina in
passing consumer protections. But it will not be easy. Predatory lenders
and banks opposed to strong regulation have fought tooth and nail against
such laws. As an example of the difficulty we face, industry recently
succeeded in getting the Republican state legislature in PA to negate the
Philadelphia law. ACORN is fighting for passage of similar legislation to
that proposed in Oakland, or is preparing to, throughout California and
across the nation. For two years, the California Legislature has failed
to adopt adequate protections of California citizens, despite the best
efforts of Senators Solis and Dunn, and ACORN, AARP, the California Labor
Federation, CRC, Greenlining Institute, Consumers Union, Congress of
California Seniors, and many, many others. Please help us win relief for
Oakland's communities.
Thank you.
Fannie Brown, Oakland ACORN Board
Tara Polansky, Oakland ACORN Head Organizer
Brian Kettenring, Northern California Regional Organizer
PS. Should anyone want a copy of the ordinance language itself, please
email us. Thanks.

Thanks for your help Evelyn,
I don't think that it is going to go under - early
signs look good. It's only been a few months since
we cleared the place of the tons of garbage
that people dumped here, but the rental schedule
is getting pretty busy. We've had quite a few
major parties, banquets, a funeral, and a memorial,
however, we still have a long way to go. And the
building, though basically sound, needs major
repairs. Anyway, we are working hard to have
something to pass on to our ancesters so that
they can continue to use this hall to support the
left.
thanks again,

June,
You don't have to do anything heroic. Just try to
make progressives aware of this hall. We want to
support the left and are trying to do it by making
this hall available for meetings. Maybe it's the
wrong thing to do? I dunno. But it's worth a try.
If nobody out there cares then that is ok, we will
simply move on and try something else. However,
the early signs are that there is quite a bit of
interest from the left.
thanks!

Sent your request to our Women for Peace group. In the 70's we held
annual fund-raising dinners there. Also, a very successful breakfast
gathering for trade unionists - amongst other gatherings held there.
Would hate to see the Hall go under. It's easy to get to by public
transportation and there is easy street parking.
Hope your email has gone out to all political and social justice groups
in this area.

Hello Oakland Greens from the Fellowship of
Humanity!
Some of you may know that our hall used to be a
major
hangout for the Green Party back in the eighties.
But about ten years ago, this greedy lawyer guy
kicked everybody out of the hall, tried to get it
into his name somehow, and then sell it off for his
own profit. What a fate for a hall built by
Communists! Anyway, he was stopped recently and
the hall was reopened to outside groups. This was
not easy, some wanted to keep the hall private and
quiet - kind of a geriatric men's club. But some
of the commies here wanted the hall to return to
being a resource for the left, something along the
lines of La Pena. This strategy has worked
somewhat,
there are some great groups meeting here
(Committees of Correspondence, Workers Democracy
Network, Just Cause, and Uhuru). But we need more
support to keep this place from becoming another
auto dealership. And we also need help making this
place as Green as possible. We've done the
compact florescent thing but we've got a huge
South-facing roof so we should be able to get off
of the grid at some point. Some part of our lawns
should be converted back to native vegetation, etc.
Anyway, enough babbling! Is there any interest in
helping us?
Dave Oertel
Caretaker and proud Green Party member

Subject: PROTEST THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 4:30-6:30 P.M.
HELLO! PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THURSDAY'S BIG PROTEST AT IES!!
WE EXPECT A LARGE TURNOUT, BUT NEED EVERYONE TO HELP MAKE THAT A REALITY.
Also, call Ellen Garvey at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to
demand they deny IES' Title V permit in light of the recent massive
violations at the plant, including IES' defiance of a cease and desist
order issued by the State. (415) 749-4970
We encourage Oakland and Alameda residents to be contacting your city
council and county supervisors about this issue!

in Big Rally for Worker and Community Health
"We are Fed Up With Breathing Toxic Air!"
PROTEST TO DEMAND AN END TO MEDICAL WASTE BURNING
AT INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS
THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2001 AT 5 P.M.
IN FRONT OF IES INCINERATORS, 499 HIGH STREET, OAKLAND
Oakland, CA -- Oakland and Alameda youth, senior citizens and soccer moms
will join community, health and environmental justice groups in a major
protest in front of the Integrated Environmental Systems medical waste
incinerators, Thursday, June 28, 2001, 5 p.m. at 499 High Street, Oakland.
The protest will be large, multiracial and very spirited.
Fed up with toxic emissions and ongoing serious violations of IES' permit
and the law, the community will rally to demand IES become a good neighbor
by replacing their medical waste incinerators with safer non-incineration
treatment technologies to protect workers' jobs and worker and community
health. The IES incinerators emit dioxin, mercury and other toxic
chemicals and metals into the air of surrounding neighborhoods.
Adding fuel to the fire of community concern, IES recently was found in
serious violation of their permit and California law for large scale
illegal storage of medical waste as well as other violations. In response
to these violations, the State Department of Health Services issued a
Cease
and Desist Order to IES. IES then violated the Cease and Desist Order and
compliance agreement, prompting state officials to suspend the company's
permit for 30 days.
At Thursday's protest, the Coalition will announce if IES has responded to
our request to immediately begin good faith negotiations to address
community concerns regarding the incinerators and other safety issues. If
IES fails to agree to negotiate in good faith, Coalition members will
begin
a nonviolent and direct escalation of the campaign.
