Description

Welcome to the o3ozone Group. Ozone is a toxic allotrope of oxygen, yet vital to life--without ozone in the stratosphere, much more harmful ultraviolet radiation would reach the Earth's surface. Some of man's chemicals have produced ozone depletion in the stratosphere, and the most severe loss has taken place above Antarctica every spring for 30 years. In some years, major ozone depletion has occurred above the Northern Hemisphere, although not as severely as over southern polar regions.
The 2010 Antarctic ozone hole season was not particularly destructive, but it lasted unusually long -- up to the December solstice. This allowed unusually high UV indices over the Southern Ocean and, at times, populated regions. Residual low ozone affected southern South America and the Falkland Islands over the first few days of 2011. On January 13, another low ozone area moved over Tasmania.
The Arctic stratosphere has had a long cold winter -- cold enough to produce "ozone-eating" stratospheric clouds. There is evidence of major ozone depletion over high latitudes, including northern Russia. Maps from several sources -- ground, SBUV, and TEMIS/KNMI -- can be compared here. Also see the British Antarctic Survey Ozone page, NASA's Ozone Watch site and the NOAA Stratospheric Analyses and Forecasts Page. These UV Index forecast maps are courtesy of KNMI/ESA.
