Clearly, Joel Klein's reputation for being a negative force in public education has spread far and wide to areas of the country where he generally gets good press. 
 
This is a potential  army of opinionmakers who should be harnessed --  whether he stays here in NYC or leaves for DC.

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/  -  the anti-Joel Klein  teacher petition --  now  has over 1,300 signatures; what's fascinating is that the signers  appear to come from all over the country and include a good number of academics etc.
 
Just two  examples -- who happen to be the most recent signers on the list - and whose names I looked up :
 
Signer # 1334:
Betty Lou Whitford  Dean and Professor, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development, at the University of Southern Maine, and author of  a recent book called "Accountability, Assessment, and Teacher Commitment : Lessons from Kentucky's Reform Efforts."
 
Signer # 1333: Nancy L. Cook, Professor of Law, Director, Community Justice and Legal Assistance Clinic, Roger Williams University

I too looked at all the signatures, mostly because I wanted to make sure it was the petition I had already signed (it was) so I wouldn't accidentally sign it...
