Would like to make it but can't that night, could make it on the 4th or
5th or the following week.
Harper College would be a great location, if it can be arranged.

Bob writes,
In regards to the install location, I will call Harper College in Palatine and
see what it takes to start up an official CLUB there. I know some people
there and if we could get club status we might be able to schedule a room with
power. I will ask for a computer lab that isn't being used, but I'm not going
to expect that to be easily available, atleast not right away.
After next Wed. they will be closed until the new year, so if I hear anything
before next Wed I will post it to the list.

Yes, I stand corrected, January 6th is a Wednesday. Let's make it 7pm
at Borders. The subject of the meeting will be the organization of
NWCLUG.
I would really like to try and organize an install fest, so if anyone
has any good ideas for a location let me know. Probably the only
prerequisite for this would be someplace where folks could set up and
plug in their systems to get them installed. I am sure there is quite
a few folks out there that want to make the Linux plunge and we can
help give them the support an encouragement they need for that.

Hello All,
I have received a few inquiries about the health of NWCLUG (is it
dead?). I would guess it is not as we have in excess of 20 people
subscribed to the mailing list. I have not felt in any rush to
organize the first meeting though, as I only received four responses
to the poll regarding meetings and the fact that we are getting in to
the thick of the holiday season.
I really feel that the primary activity of the group should be focused
on install fest. The growing interest in Linux is creating a large
number of folks who are interested and willing to take that first
step, but would like to have someone around to help them out of a
sticking point here or there.
There seems to be at least a couple of folks who want to get together
as soon as possible and had suggested a coffee shop get together. One
individual had mentioned Borders by Woodfield on Golf rd. (NorthEast
corner of Golf and Mecham), which was appealing to me. I think
Tuesday January 6, 1999 would be a good time a it would prevent us
from conflicting with CLUG and give everyone plenty of notice. Let me
know if you are interested in attending. I think the forum will be
limited to the direction we want NWCLUG to take.

Folks:
I just got added to an egroups mailing list without requesting it... that's
a very bad sign, since I've only been signed up on that site for a week or so.
As such, I'm going to unsubscribe from NWCLUG@egroups.com and activate
NWCLUG@....
Anyone who wishes is free to subscribe to this list... I *PROMISE* that
your email address will never be given out to anyone and there won't be any
annoying ads at the bottom of each message.
To subscribe to this new mailing list, send email to
NWCLUG-SUB@.... You will receive a subscribe confirmation request
(to prevent spammers). Once you are subscribed, you'll start getting list
mail.

I'll offer to host this list on my server (MIDRANGE.COM) which already

The list name would be nwclug.

I am involved with the Chicago Audio Society (a club for audiophiles), and
we have a constitution and bylaws, although we're not yet registered with
the state. Basically all it takes is a phone call to Springfield to
obtain the registration information, although I don't remember the phone
number.
As for being registered, if the members vote to do it, it may be useful to
know nonprofit status is easy to accomplish for educational organizations.

Well, it appears that we don't have an outpouring of support for the
Starbucks idea (perhaps it was too short of notice?).
Maybe we could meet at the Borders by Woodfield NEXT saturday?
I like the library idea too though... the coffee isn't as good, but we
probably won't get kicked out :)

This does sound like a good location, both geographically and value. There is
probably some exception to the requirement for the registration for a newly
forming group but it does give some understanding why it will be necessary to
work out some of the detail on our group as soon as possible.
In all honesty we can probably get a lot of those types of details and actions
at least in a rough draft though the use of our mailing list. Lets face it,
this type of interaction is a lot of what has allowed Linux and many of it's
great utilities/ applications to become what it is.
Has anyone on the list have a background in this type of process ( creating a
constitution, bylaws, registering with the state, etc )

Good news! The mailing list has already grown to 19 members
I am glad to see that there is so much enthusiasm, to get things rolling for the
new NWCLUG. I would prefer to wait a little bit longer to even have an informal
meeting. This is because I have just got the list set up Wednesday night and I
did not even get an announcement out to the CLUG list inviting people to join
until yesterday. Of course any one who wants to get together is free to do so,
and I know there is some question as whether we meet before the next CLUG
meeting. I personally don't feel the need is so urgent, and would like to give
a few more people a chance to join.
I think the best way to proceed at this point is to decide on a meeting place
that we could have a more formal meeting than a few guys sitting around drinking
coffee. No offence but I have a feeling that a larger percentage of this
mailing list will attend meeting/events as it was stated in the invitation to
join that the CLUG mailing list would still be one preferred for
giving/requesting technical support.
I will start a few polls you should receive shortly asking:
1. How many people plan attending meetings on a regular basis.
2. How many people want to make sure that they attend the first meeting and have
input on the initial structure of the group.
3. How long we should wait to have the first meeting, giving the list a chance
to grow, especially since we are now getting to the thick of the holiday season.
It will be necessary to have meeting to discuss some of the core questions of
how we operate, if for no other reason than the fact that I typically value the
input of someone who has made the effort to attend a meeting.

I'd like to propose that we have an informal gathering of some sort to
hash out some of the details ... perhaps at a restaurant or coffee-shop
(I'm a sucker for starbucks).
In fact, what do folks thing about getting together this Saturday (12/5)
around 10am at the Starbucks on Rand, just south of Dundee?

As the list was just created last night there has been no discussion yet. I
have just check though and found that all but one of the people how were invited
to join the list has done so.
Remember from the first letter that one of the advantages of using egroups for
this mailing list is that old messages can be viewed at:
http://www.egroups.com/list/nwclug/
It would seem appropriate at this point to discuss a potential meeting place for
the group as this may greatly affect the time that it would take place. Based
on the responses I have received it seems that the Schaumburg area would be a
ideal location, central to our membership, but more importantly we need an
actual site. If anyone has any suggestions, please respond to the list

Man someone's impatient! =)
Shouldn't we be oriented by the next CLUG meeting which will discuss
the organization of daughter clugs?

Hi,
My name is Michael Schmitt (ipv6_128@...)
You are receiving this message because you sent me a e-mail expressing
an interest in a
North West Chicagoland Linux Users Group.
I received 12 replies thus far from my posting to the CLUG mailing
list and I have decide that the best way for this process to continue
is to create a mailing list which I have done on the site:
www.egroups.com
I have set the mailing list up such that it is un-moderated at this
time, but posting to the list requires joining the list. This of
course can be changed at a latter date if the members of the list feel
that it is in our best interest
If you wish to post to the list simply send to
nwclug@egroups.com
One of the reasons that I have used the egroups site for our mailing
list is the benefit of having postings archived on their web site.
For future reference the site to go to view these is:
http://www.eGroups.com/list/nwclug/
You should be receiving a invitation to join the mailing list soon.
If not you may do so by sending e-mail to:
nwclug-subscribe@egroups.com
I personally am interested in a NWCLUG because as much as I enjoyed
the last CLUG meeting, I have a hard time justifying giving up the
resources (time, energy, gas, toll money, etc) necessary to attend
another meeting.
I feel that it will be in all of our best interest to remain members
of the CLUG mailing list and use that venue for the purpose of
providing and receiving Linux tech support. My desire in attempting
to form the NWCLUG is that the two groups, NWCLUG and CLUG, will
provide a synergy to each other where by the two groups will be of
benefit to each other.
I believe the purpose of the group should be as stated in the Linux
User Group HOWTO
*advocacy
*education
*support
*socializing
This will probably be best initially served by having monthly meetings
with speeches, demonstrations and of course install fest, but we can
decide that as we actually become a group.
If my suspicions are correct we will see a significantly larger number
of Linux users attend the NWCLUG meetings, than will be lost from the
CLUG meetings, and we will always have the ability to join these two
groups together for large events (speakers, demonstrations,
promotional events, etc)
I think the best way to precede at this point is to join the list and
we will take it from there.
Sincerely
Michael Schmitt

Hi,
My name is Michael Schmitt (ipv6_128@...)
Last week there was a posting to the CLUG mailing list inquiring about
a North West Chicagoland Linux Users Group. I responded by saying
that I was not aware of one but would be interested in starting one.
I received 12 replies thus far from my posting to the CLUG mailing
list and I have decide that the best way for this process to continue
is to create a mailing list which I have done.
I personally am interested in a NWCLUG because as much as I enjoyed
the last CLUG meeting, I have a hard time justifying giving up the
resources (time, energy, gas, toll money, etc) necessary to attend
another meeting. I can install linux in 20 minutes but it took me in
excess of 1 hour of travel each way to get to the CLUG meeting. I
have a feeling that there are a considerable number of other Linux
users in the NW suburbs that would like to attend LUG meetings but the
distance factor limits the frequency of their attendance. The
individuals who responded to the posting of a NWCLUG possibility have
already expressed this.
My desire in attempting to form the NWCLUG is that the two groups,
NWCLUG and CLUG, will provide a synergy to each other where by the two
groups will be of benefit to each other.
If my suspicions are correct we will see a significantly larger number
of Linux users attend the NWCLUG meetings, than will be lost from the
CLUG meetings, and we will always have the ability to join these two
groups together for large events (speakers, demonstrations,
promotional events, etc). Keep in mind as well that with a minimal
amount of effort it should be possible to stager the two groups
meetings allowing individuals who are interested, the ability to
attend meetings for both groups.
I feel that it will be in all of our best interest to remain members
of the CLUG mailing list and use that venue for the purpose of
providing and receiving Linux tech support.
I believe the purpose of the group should be as stated in the Linux
User Group HOWTO

*socializing
This will probably be best initially served by having monthly meetings
with speeches, demonstrations and of course install fest.
I have set the mailing list up such that it is un-moderated at this
time, but posting to the list requires joining the list. Both these
settings can be changed at a latter date if the members of the list
feel that it is in our best interest. I have also already received
an offer by one of the interested individuals to set up the list on a
Linux box that he administers. The merits of this will probably be
one of the first subjects discussed. Anyone interested in joining the
list may do so by sending e-mail to:
nwclug-subscribe@egroups.com
If you wish to post to the list simply send to
nwclug@egroups.com
One of the reasons that I have used the egroups site for our mailing
list is the benefit of having postings archived on their web site.

David,
I think there is definite merit to your suggestion. As I stated the
advantage of using this venue is the archiving on their web site. From
what I have seen it is entirely possible to set up our own mailing
list that would still use their site for the purpose of archiving. It
is my intention to have an archive as I hate keeping old postings on
my machine, because “I might want to reference it latter. Another
possibility is to start moderating the list to prevent spam ( the
scorn of the internet).
Since you offered, I leave it in your hands. If you wish to host the
list by all means do so. One thing I am curious about though is the
possibility of future change. Will you always have the ability to
administer this list, or is it connected to another affiliation
(work?) that could change in the future and necessitate a major change
in the list set up.
Let me know.
