Just FYI to anyone planning on attending the CITO at the RCGDS Mile this month.
Improper Disposal? Not on the RCGDS Mile!! (GC26QPB) on June 12th.

The Bridge at Hazel Avenue will be closed to traffic in both directions.  If you live North of the river (or will be joining us for breakfast) your best bets to get across the river will be to take either the Sunrise Blvd bridge or one of the crossings in Folsom.

Breakfast Event - Fuel Up Before You Clean Up! (GC26QM9)

CITO Event - Improper Disposal? Not on the RCGDS Mile!! (GC26QPB) 9AM to Noon.

Also, for those of you out completing challenges.  This would be a great opprotunity for the 7 Icons Challenge.

Within the RCGDS Mile there is a Multi, Letterbox, Traditional and an Earthcache. Who knows, there may even be the final for a puzzle that I don't know about.  (Not sure about the accessability to the EC at this time with the construction.)

7 Icons Challenge (GC1QQF4)

Subject: QFC - Summer Competition
quadmft
Send Email Send Email

This is the 3rd year we have been having our Quick Finders Competition (QFC).
This year Krypton and geocaching did not want to "encouracge" other to hide
caches by playing this game.

We are playing the game but Geocaching and Krpton don't have to endorse it. I
am posting here for those folks that might want to to play along. I will tell
you that there are some excellent caches in this series so far and we are up to
8 of 20.

Here is how the original page looked so you can get a feel for the game:

"Here is the way the game is played. (Slightly different from last year's QTF
competition) This is the initial cache hidden, find it.
Each player's score will begin on this cache.
Each of first fifteen (15) finders receives a score (which will be kept on this
page updated each Saturday) and the cacher with the highest score at the end of
twenty caches will be the winner of a special prize at the event cache at the
end of the competition.

The scoring method is designed to include a lot of people in the game and
besides we all (at some point) have lives that can get in the way of an FTF
attempt. But you still want to be quick to find, to score maximum points.

The points scoring goes like this:
FTF AND the hider (cache owner) – 5 points
(Yes, five points for the FTF AND for the hider of the next cache)
Second and Third – 4 points
Fourth and Fifth - 3 Points
Sixth and Seventh– 2 Points
Eighth through Fifteenth - 1 Point

Co-FTF? In a series like this a Co-FTF can complicate issues. So here is the
suggestion. Try to make the call on the FTF.
If there are a few people looking for the cache at the same time when the cache
is found, how do you decide who is second, third etc.? I don't know. Draw
straws? Rock-paper-scissors? If you want, maybe you add all the points together
and divide by the number people finding. Just let me know how you want it done
when you log the find.

If a cacher finds a cache but is not in the competition (has not found QFC #1)
then that cacher will not receive a score on that cache. If someone joins in on
the fun on a later cache and wants to be part of the competition, just let me
know and I will include you. The more the merrier.

For the first cache – I will be applying the same scoring method as with all
subsequent caches. Therefore, I start with 5 points for hiding.

Bobolu says – "Let's have fun, since that is what this hobby is about"

If, as the caches go on, there is a problem with your or any score on the
series, please let me know via email.

If you want to find quality cachesn look for these. Our code is that er of the
next cache in cache know it is part of the series. (look for a 9 - published by
Eswolf for the next cache.

Just to let everyone know there is one heck of a geocaching power trail down on highway 375 in Southern Nevada between Tonopah and Alamo. All are roadside caches and on average 550 feet apart.
Redvoodoo, Blucruz, and BigSis91 managed to log 1077 caches between Friday Morning and Sunday Afternoon. At one point we were getting 1 cache every 35-40 seconds but Blucruz was driving like a madman and Redvoodoo was logging like a freak possessed! Our average for the trip while caching on the power trail itself was one cache every minute and 6 seconds. We also set personal bests of over 600 caches in one day, actually it was in about 9 hours on Saturday.
Hope some of you NUTS can get down there before the desert claims some of them!

Saw this posted by GorgeHiker in the Groundspeak forums and thought someone in
the area might want to check it out

"As I was watching the commercial for the upcoming movie: "Cats & Dogs", I
happened to pause the video just as the evil cat was taking a picture. On the
screen was some numbers that looked familiar. "Hey, wait, those are coordinates"
I thought. At the top of the screen was the numbers 34.6813844 -118.4986719.
Those coordinates convert to: n34 40.883 w118 29.920 and is located right off a
road in Angeles National Forest north of LA.

I'm on the other side of the country but just wondering if a final to a multi is
located there or maybe something put there by the makers of the film? I'd check
it out myself but I'm just too far away.

If anyone is out that way, it be cool to know."

Let us know if you find anything!

Thanks for the reminder Faith.

DaughPack, the Four Ladies, and Rock&Crystal will no doubt be there. Maybe MtnTrek and BluCruz, though no word there yet.

This is a real "cool" annual rally with a venue in the Nevada desert. This year Lovelock is rolling out the carpet for geocachers. There will be 50 fresh caches placed for the event in addition to those placed for the rally. GBES always does a great job of putting this event together, and if you've never combined a navigational rally and geocaching this would be a great one, on road or off.

Hope to see some more NUTS there, Rock&Crystal

I was contemplating starting a RCGDS fan page on Facebook but I wanted to get the group's permission first.  There are many of us that are already on FB every day and I think that there would be many potential benefits to a page that we could all tune into and participate on.  (I would also need a couple of you who would be willing to Co-Administer the page, minimal commitment)

Things that I could see the page useful for.
Posting experiences on awesome caches. (Cache recommendations)
Caching collaboration and excursions.
Update on new event postings for those who don't get notifications or don't utilize "premium" member features.
Awareness of other Non-Geocaching events that can impact or supplement the Geocaching experience.
Posting of invites to geocaching events outside of the RCGDS.
Bring attention to updates in the RCGDS website forums.
Help new area geocachers find us.
Geocaching advice, tip and tricks and constructive criticism.
Maybe a FAQ section in the Discussions section.
And much much more!!

What the page would not be used for:
Player or Cache bashing!!
A political playground for personal agenda pushing. (either real world or caching)
Blatently offensive material. (Use common sense here)
Let me know what everyone thinks.  And worst case scenerio, I could start the page and if it falls apart or gets out of hand it can be deleted very easily.

Great idea! A lot of people are on Facebook anyway, and it just means fewer
places you have to go to get updates on things you're interested in.

I am looking for a Geocaching partner, somebody to go with me. I'm tired of
going alone. I'm unemployed right now and have plenty of time on my hands, but
everyone else I know that is into this, has other things going on usually, even
on weekends.

I'm a 24 hour type of guy so I can pretty much go whenever. Right now I live in
Chico, and I'm looking for company specifically this weekend, both days, or
either, doesn't matter.

Angel Island

I have been re-inspired to look at a multi day trip to Angel Island next spring/summer.  Anyone interested in joining me or have any advice?  This is my initial plan with dates to be determined and other details to be hammered out.

Taking the Amtrak train to Emeryville, bus to the SF Ferry Station.  Hop on the Ferry to the island.  Camp out for two nights and return the same way. (Ferry, Bus and Train)  This would give me a full day and two partial days to explore and cache on the island.

I was thinking that taking the train would be just a bit less expensive than paying for gas, tolls and a few days of parking.  Of course I would be dragging along my mountain bike since it can be taken on the train, bus and ferry.(Bike rental available on the island as well)  With just enough gear/food in my pack for minimalist camping I would pack light.  And be forewarned, I plan on visiting every cache and historical site on the island so if you can keep up, great!  If not, enjoy the island at your own pace.

If anyone was interested in splitting the cost of the nightly campsite 2, 3 or even 8 ways that would be great. (8 per camp site max)  I was thinking about one of the campsites on the backside of the island.

Costs involved:

Train & Bus - $56 Round Trip (Amtrak)

Ferry - $16 Round Trip (Blue & Gold Ferry and includes park fees)

Campsite - $60 (Two nights but could be split up to 8 ways)

Schedule:

Friday

            Amtrak Train – 6:35AM - 8:10AM

            Amtrak Bus – 8:25AM – 8:55AM

            Ferry to Island – 9:20AM – 10:05AM

Rest of the day – Set up camp and explore

Saturday

            Play and explore all day

Sunday

Play in the AM till 2ish or so

            Ferry to Mainland – 4:30PM – 5:50PM

            Amtrak Bus – 6:15PM – 6:50PM

            Amtrak Train – 7:05PM – 8:55PM

With what looks like 40+ caches on the island and lots of hiking trails it would be a fun filled few days.  I might even schedule an event on the island to see if any of the locals would make the trip for a meet and greet.  Anyone interested??

Tammy: To answer your question about the bus.  The Amtrak does not cross the bay bridge so I woulld get off the train in Emeryville and catch the Amtrak Bus over the bridge. (I would be coming from Sacramento using the Capitol Coridor train)

Ken:  Service Project.... that's a great idea.  With this much time I will see what I can work out with the parks department and the Island Association.

Everyone else:  Like I said, I don't have dates just yet.  Just working out the idea and I am pleased to see that there is interest from many of you.  Now I need to do some work over the next few months to make this happen.  (I will be riding the train and taking the bus to SF tomorrow so I can gauge the bike hauling capability)
