Why? All you are going to accomplish with the stick is to tick it off
and maybe get bit. I would guess that this snake gave you plenty of
notice of it's presence, and was probably trying to run away from you
by the time you spotted it.

My understanding is that the stick is a moving object for the snake to focus on instead of your leg.  Also, sticks can be used to make noise to scare any snakes away before you get close enough to alarm them.  Singing works too - in my case, everything runs away!

I think it is much safer with a walking stick also.  If you are going to look under a log or want to move a rock it is much safer using a stick than your bare hand.  Even though rattlesankes are non agressors and will try to retreat, if you reach under a log and the snake feels threatend it will strike.

Take it from a former herpetologist who worked at the San Diego Zoo once upon a time... stick to the stick!! ...it most certainly IS a good idea!! By the way, not all rattlers have read the books that say they are not aggressive.. any rattler can get down right testy and belligerent at times... especially when they are about to shed and are blind (which can be 3-4 times a year... depending on the availability of food). Some just like to stand their ground, too. Experience has demonstrated to me that they seem to have various personalities almost like humans... some have a short fuse, some are very mild mannered... some strike without opening their mouths, some don't seem to want to keep them shut! :o)  Rock p.s. for rattlesnake removal... give us a holler! :o)

The stick is to poke around in front of me as I walk. Give me some warning as to where not to step. Not interested in fighting any snakes. That would be stupid. Saw this guy as I got to about 3 ft from him (he didn't rattle before I saw him) but then realized I was not able to see every step back to my Cruiser(tall grass) and I've heard they are like mice "where theres one theres more". Don't know if its true but why risk it?
