Lots of Chestnut B Ms also appearing west of the hospital over the last
week. Saw c150 in a group on Saturday descending from the trees in showers
near the creek. Nothing since June prior to that.

the new management plan for cas coastal res (aug 2002) has a diagram showing
where dogs are allowed. Technically no dogs allowed between lee pt and buff
ck, however the reserve boundary is an odd thing. it doesn't cover the
entire beach area between lee pt and buff, but one would have to take their
dog through a 'no dog' area to get to the beach part. SO YOU HAVE EVERY
RIGHT TO TELL THEM OFF!
between lee pt and rapid ck dogs must be kept under control, and between
dripstone park and sandy ck, must be on leash.
Signs, education material etc will be done over the next few months,
followed by enforcement. I complained that it should be done now for the
birds, so hopefully they will start at buff.
Sorry Dave, you won't be allowed on buffalo ck again!

The Brown Boobies were well off shore from Buff Creek. We saw them through a
scope. I am confident of teh record, but they were a long way off.
I have seen them before whilst fishing for mackerel off Lee Point before.
Although I didnt keep records, mackerel fishing is only a dry season thing off
Lee Point.

The Brown Boobies are pretty interesting for the time of year. There
are historical but no recent Dry Season records of this species as
far as I know.

Interesting to note that not all Grey Plovers at Buf Creek were in colour and
some may have over wintered. I have records for Grey plover in every month this
year at Buff Creek.
Almost gotinto a fight about dogs on the beach. Can dogs runon teh beach at
Buffalo Creek?

Top day and a half Niven. Our usual spot for occasional Cistacolas
during the dry has been burnt to a cinder (RAAF on Lee
Point/Fitzmaurice).
'Lead' Chestnut mannikin arrived our garden 25/8/02, followed by 2nd
day later and now 15 this morning. This will continue to build if
pattern follows previous 4 years to about 200 on the lawn and usually
includes 1 or 2 yellow rump Mannikins in the group. They are a
couple of weeks early this year for us.
A first for our garden (Leanyer)yesterday afternoon - Leaden
Flycatcher at the water.
Receding waterhole at Mackinlay / Daniel Circuit Herbert (Humpty Doo)
on Sunday morning got 21 species and probably more duck species but
needed a scope. The large group of ducks were gone by 12.30 on a
return trip. There were hardheads, little black cormorant, little

Ibis, juvenile jabiru, 6 Royal spoonbill, heaps of tree martins and
as well as Pelicans on the water, about 20 circling overhead with a
jabiru high above them.
Benjamin Lagoon is close by but while there is public access around
the lagoon, appears to be no access thru' private property to get to
it?
Hi all
I had a Hungarian visitor to take out this weekend, so spent the
time dashing about, racking up as many 'quality' species as I
could. I didn't need to look for some of the basic ones as he'd been
to Queensland already and seen heaps. Nevertheless, we chalked
up over 150 for the day and a half.
Highlights were:
Marsh Sandpiper (first for season, 5 at Knuckeys)
Chestnut Rail (Buffalo Creek)
Buff-banded Rail (2, Palmerston Sewage Works)
Great-billed Heron (Buffalo Creek)
Black Falcon (Knuckeys and Marrara)
Purple Swamphen (Marlow Lagoon)
Little Curlew (Darwin Sewage Works)
Dollarbird (Driver, Fiddler's Lane, Humpty Doo)
Red-kneed Dotterel (Knuckeys)
Barking Owl (Nakara School)
Tawny Grassbird (Palmerston Sewage Works)
Masked Finch (Palmerston Sewage Works)
Little Kingfisher (Buffalo Creek)
as well as all the typical goodies like Pitta, Golden Whistler etc.
Dipped on Beach Stone-curlew, White-breasted Whistler and
Zitting Cisticola. As well as all button-quails!
Does anyone know any reliable sites / hints for Dry Season
Zittings?? Advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Niven

Hi all,
I went down to Alice Springs during the week. Got 16 Freckled Duck and one
Welcome Swallow at the sewerage works. Apparently they have been there for a
month.
Saw one Barbary Dove. Not sure of the current status of the feral population,
but they were common three years ago.
Got two Long-billed Corellas (feral again).
At Newhaven saw 20 Inland Dotterel, Orange Chats. No grey Falcon, Slaty-backed
Thornbill or Grey Honeyeater.

The only waders which are displaying mottling for me have been great knots,
and the sanderlings are not as washed out as they usually are later in the
season.
Also about 50 Greater Sandplovers at Lee Point on 11 August at Lee Point 11
August. One or two in very distinctive breeding plumage.
Grey plover East Point 14 July, not in breeding plumage.

Hi All
on a quick visit to Fiddler's Lane swamp this afternoon (Fri 23 Aug)
I noted six Wood Sandpipers (up from one on my previous visit)
and a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper.
Cheers
Niven
It must be the month for interesting sightings. Two, both in non-breeding plumage (one had trace breeding plumage only), on a swamp about 10 km north of Beswick, today (Aug. 18).

The Yellow-billed Spoonbill is still at Leaning Tree Lagoon. Also
there this morning were two cockatiels.
I saw a single Wood Sandpiper at Fiddler's Lane swamp this
morning (Sat 17 Aug), the first for the season so far. A Greenshank
was at Knuckey's though this species overwinters, so it's not
possible to know if it was a recent arrival.
Keep watching for the migrants, and report them as they arrive.

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] BUSTARD and FLOCK BRONZEWING RECORDS REQUEST
Greetings all,
I write in the hope of soliciting some help from the vast pools of
experience of Australian birders. I’m currently undertaking a PhD study
focussing on the ecology and conservation of the Australian Bustard in
northern Australia. Part of the study aims to examine broad, landscape
scale patterns of distribution and movements of Australian ‘nomadic’
birds. To this end I am focussing on the Australian Bustard and Flock
Bronzewing Pigeon as model species, both being reportedly “classically
nomadic" and relatively conspicuous and easily identifiable.
For this purpose I am collating records of the two species from as many
sources as possible and would therefore like to ask for your help. I am
particularly interested in any and all records of Flock Bronzewings and
records for the last decade of Bustards from the arid, semi-arid and
temperate zones, particularly from regions where they occur
sporadically. Required information includes location of sighting
(closest town/homestead or preferably GPS coordinate), date, number, sex
and signs of breeding activity.
All contributions will be most gratefully received and fully
acknowledged. To spare list members excess mail please respond directly.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
Best regards,
Mark

Bruce,
If there is no colour on them, is it expected that they were not recent arrives?
I assumed new arrives, even if failed breeders, would still arrive in, at least
part, breeding plumage.

I saw a Channel-billed Cuckoo in a tree at the Botanic Gardens this
afternoon (Tues 13 Aug). Presumably recently arrived.
Also, the Rufous Owls are still by the toilet block, with no sign of
any young, so they seem a bit late this year.

Hello and thanks for the invitation to join this list.
My job (working on management of mimosa) gets me out to some
remote spots. On the 30th and 31st of July I spent a couple of days
being helicoptered around the Finniss floodplains assessing the
impact of biological control agents on mimosa (looking promising, by
the way).
I didn't have much time for birding on the ground, but from the air
birds of note included quite a few bustards - double figures seen on
both days.
I spent the night on the coast at Dundee lodge and was surprised to
see three lesser frigate birds fly over at dusk.
Probably the most crazy sighting was in a remote area of bush a
few kilometers east of the Finniss River Station, when a lonely
looking peahen came trotting out of the bush to see what we were
doing.
Still no sign, though, of my NT bogey bird - yellow chat!
Cheers,
Quent

Further to Gavin's email there were around 10 red-necked stints in
among the red-capped plovers on Saturday pm. Most of the red-cappeds
were sitting rather than scurrying about. A couple of Eastern Curlew
and Whimbrel as well.
Nightcliff Rocks Sunday morning 10 Darters - is this unusual?

I had an email from a birder on Tindal reporting several Bustards
and a Red Gos on the base in the last few days. With a report
earlier this year of White-backed Swallow and a report some time
ago (poss 2 years, and from someone else) of Northern Shrike-tit
there, it seems like a pretty good place to go birding.

Hi NT birders
there was a Little Curlew at the sewage works this afternoon (Sat
10 Aug). My earliest sighting by a long way, and hopefully a sign
that there will be an interesting wader season.
Niven
A report of a Shining (or Metallic) Starling from Millner last Monday (5 Aug) is worth noting. Keep your eyes open in or around the area and give a yell if you see them. They haven't been seen since the first sighting despite several attempts.
Australian (Spotted) Crakes were seen at Holmes Jungle way back on 1 July. Worth watching there and in other swampy areas in case they turn up again.
Square-tailed Kites have been turning up in the Darwin area lately - e.g. at East Point & Charles Darwin NP.
Watch for arriving waders. Oriental Plovers could start turning up about now, along with all the normal migrants.
Help keep everyone up to date with sightings by reporting them regularly and quickly to ntbirds news.
