Dear folks,

I'm currently helping to organize this class. Martha and Elizabeth came to the
NW in 2010 to teach. They taught a Fair Isle knitting class at the Nordic
Heritage Museum and a knitting and spinning for Shetland lace on Whidbey Island.
They are both amazing teachers and a wonderful resource for this traditional
knitting style. Spread the word!

Martha Owen from the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC and Elizabeth
Johnston from Shetland, UK will be returning to Whidbey Island this fall to
teach. The class that they will teach this year is titled: Fair Isle for
Handspinners: Exploring color through fiber blending, dyeing, spinning and
knitting. It will be held from October 26-28, 2012 at Garrison Hall on the
grounds of the Fort Casey Inn in central Whidbey Island.

You can find out more information about the class, Martha and Elizabeth at
http://nordichandcraft.blogspot.com . Class descriptions and registrations
forms will be available at the end of April. In the meantime, I am collecting
an email list of folks who might be interested in the class that I can send
these out to later next month.

Dear folks,

If you tried the URL I gave in my last note, you will have ended up on a site
that was in Swedish. Sorry for the inconvenience! That's what I get for
sending the link out when I am tired. Here is the real link!!!

Dear folks,

I just sent out the registration information for those of you that were
interested in the fall class with Shetland spinner/knitter Elizabeth Johnston
and John C Campbell resident artist Martha Owen. We have had 27 folks that have
shown interest, but need to keep the class to about 23. So check your spam
filters if you don't find my email in your boxes, and register early if you
really want to take this class.

I'm still adding photos and commentary to the blog as well. Martha sent me some
great photos of her visit to Fair Isle with Elizabeth last summer. I will be
adding these bit by bit over the next few weeks.

All the best,

Wendy

Nordic Knitting Conference

Nordic Mittens!

Nordic Heritage Museum

Seattle, Washington

October 5 – 7, 2012

Dear Passionate Knitters and Spinners,

For those of you who have been waiting eagerly for more information about the
Nordic Heritage Museum's Nordic Knitting Conference, taking place in Seattle,
Washington from October 5 – 7, 2012, here are a few updates:

Registration

Registration opens on July 2, 2012, and will be, on a first-come, first-served
basis (You may have noticed our earlier information listed July 1st, but it is
difficult to get a postmark on a Sunday!). The registration form will be
available online June 20th, 2012, or you may call the Museum and we will mail
one to you. The registration process is a lottery. Registrations are collected,
sorted, and processed by postmark date and all the registrations with the same
postmark date are randomly entered into the computer. Registrations received
before July 2 will be considered a July 2 postmark. Be aware that some classes
may fill up quickly. While a July 2 postmark gives you a better chance of
getting into your first choice, it doesn't guarantee it. You will receive a
confirmation of your registration with further instructions once we start the
registration process.

All classes and instructors are subject to change without notice. Classes will
be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met.

The museum website is: www.nordicmuseum.org

All class descriptions and registration information is on the museum website.
Here is a bit more information from the museum regarding questions that have
come up.

Greetings to all of you passionate knitters, spinners, textile designers and
artists,

The response to the 2012 Nordic Knitting Conference has been great! Many of you
have already sent in your Registration Forms so you can enjoy your first choices
of the wide range of classes focused on Nordic Mittens during this unique
knitting and spinning event. Some classes are nearly full, but at this early
stage there are still some openings in every class.

In case you wondered, your registration fee includes a special "goody bag" that
you will receive when you sign in at the conference, and a Friday evening Happy
Hour, where you can meet all of the instructors and many of the other attendees
in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

We do need to clarify a few items: First, those of you who wish to sign up for
two 3-hour classes on one day should note that the fee for each 3-hour class is
$60, for a total of $120. The Registration Form online has now been altered to
make this more clear, but if you have any questions, please contact us.

Second, Susanna Hansson's Lapland Hand Garments: the Mittens from Rovaniemi
includes a 3-hour Friday afternoon session as well as a 6-hour session on
Saturday, for a total of 9 hours. The total cost for the class is $170. It is
also necessary to take both sessions. Susanna has created a very comprehensive
class with an incredible amount of information and knitting experience for her
students. We think you will find the class to be an outstanding experience.

And one last thing (Sorry!): Please make sure you have put your class choices on
the proper days, and please check your math before you send in your Registration
Forms! (Don't forget to add in the cost of lunches.)

Thank you all for the wonderful response to the 2012 Nordic Knitting Conference.
We are sending out the first wave of confirmation forms now.

Happy Knitting and Spinning!!

This is from Evelyn. It's a VERY nice ebook. Karin

"This summer I have been organizing some designs. Earlier this month I wrote up
Trail Hands, a lacy ribbed fingerless glove that has been part of my winter
wardrobe, and it is free on Ravelry.

I also gathered seven of my favorite Icelandic lace designs into an ebook titled
Icelandic Lace Collection. It includes an article about Icelandic lace, three
previously published shawl designs—Bertha, Brimnes, and Sigridur, two new
ones—Alda and Bertha, two versions of Nammi wrist warmers, and the simple Lava
scarf.

That Icelandic lace ebook was a practice run for reissuing Knitting Lace
Triangles in ebook format. It will be updated with a few new designs, and I plan
to also offer an addendum with the enhancements for those who already have the
book. My goal is to have this available by the end of this year."

Annemor Sundbo is described as "the mother of Norwegian knitting." She has
written several books on the history and culture of knitting in Norway.

She is the foremost authority on Norwegian knitting in the world. Interweave
Knits featured a wonderful story about her in the Winter 2012 issue. She was
just awarded the Statsstipend, a five-year state income support grant from the
Norwegian Minister of Culture. The award is a highly selective award that allows
professionals in the arts the opportunity to pursue their work. (Preceeding
paragraphs from Wild Purls)

Her website
http://www.annemor.com/english.html

There are just a few openings left in Annemor's classes. I am really looking
forward to her Knitting with the Wild Fleece.

She will be the guest speaker at Saturday nights banquet.
(If attending Banquet only, no registration fee required)

Please join us !!

Hi, there. Waaaaaay back when, Alice Starmore created the Oregon pattern. Over
time it had become a vest, a cardigan, maybe a pullover
(of course any knitter can make any pattern anything they chose) and finally
redone in new colorways a few years ago.

I immediately fell for the large leaves along the edges and began the hunt for
the colors I needed. Eyebright, oh, how I love Eyebright.
It took a while to gather the colors but I finally found them all.

So, I dug in and got going on it. A few inches above the leaves I was in love
with I put it aside. While the tree like motifs are nice, it was the leaves I
really wanted.

So, I thought I would ponder a bit how I could transmogrify the pattern to suit
me best. And, here it sits, ages old and now a bit
more done than it was ten or so years ago.

Yes, the yarn is intact, thanks for that knee jerk reaction some of you were
sure to have had.

But, here's the thing. First, to my delight joining Weight Watchers when I
found that grandmotherhood was looming has paid off. Lost 28 pounds and kept it
off for six years now. So, the vest in progress as begun prior to the weight
loss would be verrrrry roomy.

Second, now that I have FOUR grandies to knit for, plus my day to day
needlewrangling fun, something that is done on size 2 needles in an adult size
is a daunting task, at best.

So, taking too long to get to the point...what I want to do is turn the swath of
gorgeous leaves into a segment of something done on larger needles or somehow
else make us of it other than by completing the vest as planned.

One idea was to change to twice sized needles and half as many stitches in
stages. Another was to felt it and make it part of a knitting tote bag. Yet
another, I am less sure about how this would
work, was to change to a lace and make it the top edge of a stole or shawl so as
to get the most use out of it.

For sure I do not want to "lose" the work I have done up to now but I
cannot see completing it other than as a chore, to be frank.

What would YOU do?

Thanks for your insights,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Yes, it is hard to lose weight and then pull a UFO out from the closet, only
to find it is way too big. My suggestion is to finish it just as it was
intended and give it to a friend or relative that wears that size.. be sure
to take a picture for your memory book..

Happy knitting,

Linda,

I have been where you are more than a few times. One time I just needed the
'guilt' to go away so I sold the partially finished sweater (w/needles, rest of
yarn and pattern) at a garage sale. At that time it was acrylic yarn so it
wasn't so precious…but I did have lots of time into it.

Since you know you will never finish it 'as is' here are my ideas. Convert it
into a pillow, a hat, a small purse, or a knitted animal. I have a sheep puppet
that has an Estonian knitting pattern for the hand and then has a plain colored
knitted head and face that came from a pattern out of Spin Off a few years ago.
I've also seen old Swedish sweaters that had knitted sleeves sewn onto a vadmal
type material that comprised the body of the garment.

Since the yarn has been 'locked' into place for so long, it would probably have
the same effect as a steek, so you might be able to make some well placed cuts
and sew up what you want. I wouldn't felt it, since you might loose your lovely
leaf pattern. But you might want to wash and full it, which would also help to
lock the yarns in place and then do your cutting.

Have fun!

I had very sentimental parts to a sweater I knit when I lived in Mongolia.
They were all wool and cabled, and I knew I'd never finish or wear it.

After several years in time out, I used the cardigan fronts to make a purse
(cut and sewn like the other lady suggests), and I still plan on using the
back, fulled, to make a roll accent pillow.

Linda - get a grip! You can finish this vest.

1. About the fit - you've got a steek up the front, right? At my gauge the
pattern repeat on my Oregon measures 3". How much too big is your vest? You can
easily eliminate one (3") or two (6") repeats on the part you've already
finished and continue on in the new size. You'll need to take out whole
repeat(s) but since it's meant to have some ease, an inch or so either way won't
make too much difference. You'll in effect have a really wide steek on the
already finished part. So you will mark the new steek edge at the beginning of
the pattern repeat that will become the new center edge and add 3 or 4 stitches
for the new steek allowance and start knitting up from there. Then when you
finish, cut off the extra width on the bottom part. If you need any help (other
than knitting it), let me know.

2. Knitting the rest - just think about the remainder as 3 or 4 pairs of socks
because that's about what you have left to knit. You knit socks on size 2s don't
you? Eat that elephant one bite at a time ;-)

3. Lots of reward. Wouldn't you rather have a beautiful vest that every one can
see rather than socks no one sees? I absolutely love my Oregon cardigan and I
get lots of compliments on it. The weight is perfect for our weather and I wear
it from September thru June.

Just do it.

Unfortunately our Icelandic instructor cancelled at the last minute.
The museum has contacted all students that were registered in her classes. We
were looking forward to having Ragga in Seattle.

Greetings!

The Nordic Knitting Conference is almost upon us! We are very excited to be able
to host so many wonderful instructors and we look forward to meeting all of you
knitters and spinners.

A PDF is attached with some information about the Museum's location, parking,
and other basics. Please remember that both the Museum and the Sunset Hill
Community Center are old buildings with rather whimsical heating systems—so be
prepared for any temperature.

More Conference activities:

Registration begins at 8:15am each class day in the Museum Admissions Lobby.
Your Registration Fee includes a Goody Bag with a ticket tucked inside for the
Happy Hour from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Friday evening. ("Banquet Only" registrants
do not receive a Goody Bag.)

Banquet doors open at 6:00pm on Saturday. Annemor Sundbø is the featured
speaker. Raffle prizes!

Vendors Acorn Street Shop and Jorstad Creek will be open from 8:30am – 5:30pm on
Friday and Saturday and from 8:30am – 2:00pm on Sunday on the Second Floor of
the Museum.

The Museum Gift Shop will be open from 8:30am – 5:30pm on Friday and Saturday
and from 8:30am – 4:00pm on Sunday. Conference participants will receive 10% off
on purchases. Instructors' books will be available, too.

2010 attendees may remember Ulla-Karin Hellsten and her yarns from Östergötland
Ullspinneri. More of her special yarns will be available this year at the Gift
Shop.

Icelandic Einband and Nature Spun yarns hand-dyed by volunteers will be for
sale. Thanks to generous donors and volunteers, all of the proceeds from sales
of these yarns will benefit the Nordic Heritage Museum.

On Saturday there will be a Silent Auction table located in the Museum Admission
Lobby. Bid on knitting books--including some rare and valuable classics, yarn,
and other special items. Winning bids announced at the Banquet. You do not need
to be at the Banquet to claim your items, but you will need to pick them up in
person at the Museum. Bidders, make sure we have your contact information.
Proceeds benefit the Museum. Bidding closes at 5:00pm.

Mittens from the Museum Collection and some on loan from Museum Members are
exhibited on the Second Floor.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support of the conference. Please contact
us if you have any questions. Remember that most of the homework and materials
fees are listed on the website (www.nordicmuseum.org). If added homework is
mentioned and you haven't received it, let us know right away!

See you very soon!

From the PDF
Welcome to the Nordic Heritage Museum's 2012 Nordic Knitting Conference—Nordic
Mittens! We
look forward to the start of the conference. Here is some important information
to help you plan for the conference and your classes.
Location and Parking
The Nordic Heritage Museum is located at 3014 NW 67th Street in Seattle,
Washington (Entrance to the museum is on 68th St). This area of Seattle is
better known as Ballard, which is known for its Scandinavian history and
culture. The Museum is located in a residential area and near METRO bus routes
#17, #18, and #75. There have been recent changes to METRO bus routes so to plan
your bus trip and to determine bus fares, visit
http://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov. Parking is available in the Museum's parking
lot and along nearby residential streets. Please see the enclosed map regarding
the location of the Museum.
One off-site venue will be used during the Conference. The Sunset Hill Community
Center, located at 3003 NW 66th St., is within 2 blocks of the Museum and
classes will be held there throughout the Conference.

Registration
Registration will start at 8:15 am at the Museum each conference day.
Registration will not be
available at the off-site venue. Plan to check in on your first day of class to
receive your conference materials. The registration desk will have volunteers
available throughout the conference to answer your questions.

Lunches, Banquet, and Happy Hour
As the Museum is located in a residential area of Seattle, we encourage you to
order a lunch from the Museum or to bring your own lunch each day. There are
restaurants and grocery stores within driving distance, however the lunch hour
may not provide you enough time to enjoy your meal and get back to the Museum
for your class. No lunches will be sold at the Museum during the conference. The
Banquet will be on Saturday, October 6th from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The banquet is a
wonderful opportunity to meet other conference goers and Nordic knitting and
spinning enthusiasts over a decidedly Northwest-inspired dinner. We are
delighted that Annemor Sundbø will give the keynote address. There will be a
limited number of banquet tickets available until they are sold out.

The Museum will host a Happy Hour on Friday, October 5th from 5:00 – 7:00pm.
Enjoy wine and appetizers while mingling with your classmates and instructors.
There will be a raffle during the Happy Hour.

Books, Yarn, and Knitting Accessories
The Museum's Gift Store is your knitting book headquarters! The Gift Store will
have books available from many of the class instructors. Acorn Street Shop and
Jorstad Creek will be the vendors selling their goods at the museum this year.
Prepare to be tempted !

Hello Knitters and Spinners!

Here are a few very last-minute updates about the 2012 Nordic Knitting
Conference:

We have sent out student and conference information to everyone attached as
PDFs. Most of the homework along with materials lists and fees are available on
the website (http://www.nordicmuseum.org/docs/NKConference2012DetailsUpdate.pdf
) so if you have forgotten what is needed for your classes, check there first.
Also we have been notified that several of you have not received the updates,
and that they have been found in Junk Mail. Pass the word along about that!

As instructors have provided additional information we have sent that out as
well:

· Annemor Sundbø has provided homework for her Design Your Own
Norwegian Mitten for Knitting and for the Hugin and Munin class.
· Susanna Hansson has provided additional homework for Thumbs Up!
· Sandy De Master and Mary Germain have an updated materials fee and
supply list. The information is the same as the website.
· Mary Scott Huff made a correction to homework for Fearless Two-color
Knitting.

We believe we have emailed everyone in these classes with the latest
information. If you have not received updates, please check your Junk Mail
folder, then contact us and we will email the homework to you.

One space left in Knitting Directly from the Fleece…/Sundbø
One space left in Danish Travelling Stitches/Rhoades
One space left in Distorted View of Cuffs/De Master and Germain
A few spaces left in Susanna Hansson's two-part intensive class Lapland Hand
Garments: Mittens from Rovaniemi
If you missed Distorted Cuffs, try Distinctive Cuffs/De Master and Germain.
If you have a friend who is new to stranded knitting, try Mary Scott Huff's
Fearless Two-Color Nordic Mittens.
There are still spaces left in other classes! You may add a class until 12:00
noon on Thursday, October 4.

There will be a very limited number of Banquet tickets available for last-minute
purchase on Saturday. Once they are gone, no more are available.

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the 2012 Nordic Knitting Conference.
It's only a few days away!!!

Warm regards,

Linda

of hand-crafted gifts, Scandinavian musical performances, and Nordic treats to
inspire holiday cheer.

Enjoy traditional Scandinavian entertainment featuring fiddlers, singers, and

and finish your gift shopping early this year!

Take a break to enjoy Nordic specialty treats available at several locations in
the Museum, including open-face Scandinavian sandwiches at the Nordic Café;

Yulefest is perfect for the entire family, with crafts for kids and Santa Claus
will even appear for photos!

I've been in contact with The Dutch Knitters to order their new book on Estonian
