A former California Conservation Corps member could be sentenced to
prison next month for starting an Aug. 19 vegetation fire in the
Whiskeytown Lake area.

Zackary Murray, 20, of Shasta Lake has accepted a plea bargain that
calls for a prison sentence not to exceed two years.

Murray, who is to be sentenced Feb. 23, pleaded guilty to unlawfully
causing a fire in exchange for having an arson count dismissed that
carried a maximum punishment of six years in prison.

According to investigative reports, Murray admitted to starting the
fire near Highway 299 and Crystal Creek Road by lighting a cigarette,
tucking it inside a matchbook and throwing it from the window of a CCC
vehicle.

According to the investigative reports, Murray was part of a CCC crew
assigned to remove brush in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

And he admitted to investigators that some on his crew were angry
because they had not been assigned to fight the Bear and French fires,
the reports say.

In a September written statement, Murray said that he threw the
cigarette and matchbook out the window in hopes that he would be
accepted as a friend by some in the CCC crew.

"It was a bad idea," he wrote. "I tried to fit in the wrong way."

But, he said, it was not his purpose to start a fire.

"He said he thought it would stay on the roadway and someone would run
over it, extinguishing the flames," according to an investigative report.

The small vegetation fire was put out by California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters from San Diego who were
fighting the French Fire in French Gulch.

paramedics on last call had CPR in progress enroute and had shocked him once

Subject: Grass Valley to pull fire alarm boxes?
n6uru
Send Email Send Email

Grass Valley to decide whether to retire or upgrade alarm system

From http://www.theunion.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2005103080131 (which
could vanish from the web at any moment)

by Britt Retherford
March 8, 2005

Grass Valley city officials are trying to determine what to do with downtown
fire alarm boxes such as this one at the intersection of Bank and Mill
streets. Several don't work anymore, and fire officials feel the boxes have
become impractical.

With telephones just about everywhere these days, the red pull boxes that
make up historic downtown Grass Valley's fire alarm system are somewhat
impractical, fire officials say.

"Why would someone run out of their house, run across the street and pull
the box when they could just dial 911?" said Fire Chief Hank Weston.

It is now up to the Grass Valley City Council to decide whether it's time to
retire the 160 boxes, some of which don't work anymore. Some might be kept
as historic icons, with the others sold to help finance the restoration of
the old Race Street fire station into a museum. The money also could help
refurbish an antique fire truck.

The proceeds could be as much as $30,000, Weston said, with potential buyers
being "anybody who is a fire department buff. They are collectors items."

On the other hand, the City Council could opt to keep the system that has
been in place since 1951. If council members choose this route, they would
need to upgrade it at a cost of about $25,000. They could replace and
modernize the system, which could cost about $500,000.

Problems with the current system and lack of use are what prompted Weston to
bring the issue to the City Council tonight. Overgrown foliage, juvenile
pranks, inebriated jokesters and old wires with thin insulation have plagued
the system in its old age.

The system is also expensive to keep up. Parts are tough to find, and
repairing some of the broken alarm boxes would come with a high price. But
Weston said he will do whatever the City Council decides.

Nevada City's City Council faced a similar decision a few years ago when its
fire department brought a similar choice before the council. Instead of
decommissioning the boxes, however, council members opted to spend the money
to fix them.

This amounted to about $70,000, said Nevada City firefighter Kevin
Cartzdafner. Since then, while the maintenance costs for the system remain
low each year, "we haven't had one fire call yet," he said.

The Nevada City Fire Department does receive about one or two prank calls
each month - similar to Grass Valley. In an effort to deter these types of
calls, the fire department puts a little paste on the box that shows up with
a black light.

A call from an alarm box gets directed to the old fire station on Broad
Street rather than the station on Providence Mine Road. Firefighters must
get information from the Broad Street station on which alarm box was
activated.

This may have been efficient at a time when most of the firefighters in both
Grass Valley and Nevada City were volunteers and there was no 911 emergency
system, but nowadays the stations are staffed, Weston said.

"I think it is a wonderful historic attribute; however, in terms of using
it, it may be counterproductive," said Nevada City City Manager Mark Miller.
"But it is not my expertise."

Thanks Mike. Fully "charged" (as it was initially reported) and fully
"involved" are different ;) It was a save, with significant floor damage
near the back. The basement was charred with most fire under the back
"porch" and into the basement. Once we realized where the flames were,
and not even in the building yet, putting a Tempest fan up front to blow
the air out the back saved the rest of the house from significant smoke
damage. For a while we had hydrant problems and were only on tank water
- which was real scary at the beginning of the incident. We were doing
everything we could to keep the fire outside and contained to under the
back room only and not making it up the wall into the basement. It
worked ;)

For a basement fire fed with Natural Gas under a Victorian house, they
did an excellent job. Arrived with it fully charged (smoke coming out of
every orfice bottom to top,) and contained to what it is. Because it was
a basement fire, it's unknown what is really going to happen to the
pretty-much intact house above it. Besides the typical basement "junk",
I can safely say 95% of their belongings were saved.

We were on our normal, City Tac 1 153.830 for on-scene, heard 4 blocks
away on NorCalScan's live scanner www.norcalscan.org/live.html

Glad to have you on board again this season Carolyn. Hopefully you won't
have to sweat as much as last year. Where is fire season declared open
this early? Just your area? I know SoCal has their own calander of
events down there...

Butte County on up to Oregon usually start the last week in May.

And if it weren't a work day I would enjoy the ceremonies in Sac.
Hopefully some others here can go.

everything responding on CDF Local 151.160? That was their goal, to get

Hello,

The CDF Firefighers' Auxiliary will be selling CDF 100 Year Commerative
Bear's. If anyone is interested in purchasing a commerative bear, please
let me know and I'll put your name on the list. I'd be happy to email
anyone a photo of what the bears will look like. Depending on "selling
permit" issues on State grounds, we're not sure if we'll be able to sell the
bears on May 9th. We're working on it. If the bears arrive by the CDF
baseball tournament the end of April, we may be selling bears that day as
well.

Auxiliary applications are available via our website or contacting me via
email and I'd be happy to email an application to you. You could help us
tremendously by passing this information around at your stations. We are
seeking new members....spouse, significant-other, siblings, children,
parents, etc. Any person interested in the betterment of the CDF
Firefighters' and their families are invited to join the Auxiliary. The
Auxiliary to the CDF Firefighters was formed in November 0f 2001. The
Auxiliary is concerned with promoting camaraderie among CDF firefighters'
families, as well as providing comfort during times of sorrow or need. If
we can be of assistance to your or your family at any time, please contact
any auxiliary officer or member. Officer's are posted at the website below.

Thank you,

The fire was behind the green tree and on the exterior, went up the wall
to the eave. It also schorched underneath that door and window behind
the tree. I'm standing right above the red helmet. :)

Does any one have the Radio Frequency Plan for the Tuolumne/Calaverea
CDF Ranger Unit.

This list could be for the Midland or Kenwood mobile radio.

Also looking for a list of TCU local net repeater sites with tones.

Thanks,

Hey everyone, I think I finally got the feed tuned up right. Have a audio/video
feed of the scanner. So if everyone could stop by www.geocities.com/shastaradio
and test it out let me know what you think. Once again this is a feed of
Northern California based in Redding. Have mulitple CDF units, CHP, County Fire,
Blah blah blah on it. Let me know if you want a freq on or off. During fire
season this will be a FIRE only feed with SHU,TGU, SKU, NEU, LMU, as well as
LNU. Thanks!

Mike

PS Also the feed is available through Bens site. www.mattlogic.com/scanner5.html

Works just dandy for me, on both sites

Seems perfectly in sync, both sites. In my arrogant opinion it's the audio
that's most important, of course, and listeners familiar with NoVa scanning
often won't need to see the display, though it is nice to have it available.

And BTW, in the brighter "strip" near the top of the display I can see a
reflection of you (or somebody) moving around. Keep your clothes on ;-)

I think video feeds add so much to audio it lets me figure out who is
talking but would settle for a audio an be happy enjoy just
listening to scanners thank u so much for all your hard work

                                                     thanks Bg
