I've got one sitting right next to me on top of a Pro-2067 and a BC-895. All
I gotta say its a great radio bar-none.
I've currently got the CDF Standard Statewide load in it along with CDF-RRU's
standard load. Alpha tags are perfect and I'm
one of the few that acutally really loves the Screen Mask feature. I don't know
about the holister area, but where I am, the
departments I need to monitor are on UHF (that definetly requires the use of PL
tones), an EDACS system, VHF-Hi, VHF-lo, and
a Motorola Type II system. The 780 is the only radio I have that will monitor
the systems the way I need to.
One thing I really love is the 2 line alpha tags that are not only channel
and bank, but in trunking talkgroups, they
are the Talkgroup and the List ID. The Control channel only mode is a miracle
for me. I can use 1 bank for the OES white,
FIREMARS, and the ITACS along with a Moto Type II 800mhz system. Before I'd have
to waste two banks for that!
A key point you need to ask yourself though is what do you want in a radio?
For me it was 500 channels min. 2 line alpha
tags, a VFO, Good trunking ability, Tone Squelch while just sitting on a channel
in manual mode (Pro-2067 does not do this),
Wideband coverage, small size but large display, and most importantly computer
programmable. The 780 did all of this for me
no sweat.
The only thing I could ask for would be Dynamic channels/banks and a 1000 or
more channels. Now that I have a radio that
does it all, I want to listen to it all. Departments that I never even knew I
could recieve come in loud and clear on it.
I'm pulling in Riverside County S.O from Huntington beach and Costa Mesa Fire
from Long beach. Would you beleive I've
actually begun monitoring DWP and such just because I can? Not much interesting
to listen to but its there and that should
count for something :)
By the way, I use it as both a mobile and a base radio. Which is why i'll
probably be buying a second one so I dont have
to keep plugging and unplugging it. I do recomend an external speaker in a
vehicle, but then i've done that with all of my
radios in there so that shouldn't be a surprise. The display is big and readable
in a vehicle compared to the Pro-2067, and
the backlit keypad is a great feature.
As you can tell I love my 780, and think its a great radio for my use.

I have had mine for about two weeks, and
I am very happy with it. Although, I am
not in an area with trunked systems, I
feel it is a real nice radio, better than
any I have owned.

Hope it helps,

Rex

Barely caught this but Shasta CDF is sending a water
tender and an engine to Tehama county for a large
structure fire. There, some action on this list! :)

Yeah - mom called me wondering what the column of smoke was out
Hooker Creek Rd was for. I told her it was probably a trash pile. Too
lazy to get out and check the radio. ;)

Action should be 151.370 dispatch and one of the following tacticals
151.175 Tact 3
151.190 Tact 4
154.385 County Fire

Are you kidding??!! Live fire posts is what it's all about here! ;)

Don't worry - this list was made to keep fire posts off of SCANnorCAL
right after the 99 fires up here. Too many people were complaining
about the fire posts on here.

It is just quiet right now until the fire season starts getting underway.

Good.
BTW: I found a pretty nice website for El Dorado County Fire.
http://www.eldoradofire.com/
The info is limited to their permanently-manned stations, but they
have some nice equipment photos plus a bunch of shots of the AEU
Command Center in Camino.
Enjoy.

Thank you Jeffrey for the heads up on the 780xlt. I hope to have mine
by fire season also, installed in the truck. It depends on whatever
tax returns come to be ;) sigh

Thanks to Mike and an insider with the RFD, I have what seems to be
most of the missing holes in the ID map for Redding's Trunked System.
http://www.norcalscan.org/shasta/rdgtrunk.html (not yet updated with
this info though)

All ID's found using fleetmap E1 P3

Fire Administration on 200
200-0 Admin Net
200-1 Support 1
200-2 Support 2
200-2 Support 3
200-2 Prevention Net

000-2 CityWide Net (used I guess for inter-department communications
although I haven't heard it used except for this "test" as we found
the ID's)

During the recent hailstorm last Thursday Mike found some more
information on ID's already found.
500-10 seemed to be all Airport related traffic although I have it
labeled as City Beautification. When I heard it as I was figuring out
the system they were talking about landscaping and flowers and all
that.
500-1 was called Field Ops which kinda makes sense - it seems to be
the dispatch or at least main channel for city works

This will be updated on my website as time permits at

As many of you know, and have seen by my past .sig file, I have been
associated with the Incident Paging Network
(http://www.incidentpage.net) for some time now.

The CAL-Statewide chapter has been without an administrator for about
8 months, since the previous admin resigned. I applied for the
position of Chapter Admin in November, and after much hemming and
hawing by the Grand Poobahs over at IPN, they've seen fit to allow me
to take over.

We're looking for a few good people to become dispatchers all over the
country. All it takes is 20 hours per month of listening to your
scanner and sending out dispatches using your internet-enabled
computer.

If you're in Central California, we need you. There's a big hole that
needs to be filled, especially since the only time anything comes out
of there is when I'm visiting my parents, or dispatching off CHP-CAD.

Some of the benefits of becoming an IPN dispatcher are: a free premium
membership, and the chance to win a free pager with service or even a
free scanner.

I hope to see some of you join and dispatch for us soon!

O.k., folks. I'm considering the purchase of a new, or nearly new
scanner. I'm looking for something that's relatively small, can handle
everything from 25-900Mhz (or higher), and be able to trunk-track. A
handheld is not out of the question, as long as I can apply external
power to it.

I'd like to stay under $200 if possible, and DEFINATELY under $300.

How about some suggestions...

Fire Season 2001 is right around the corner! Have those scanners
ready this summer. I will have FireCenter 2001 ready to go very soon.
http://www.norcalscan.org/fire/

I believe the Redding Air Attack base is holding training this week.
I don't know if there will actually be any flights or if it's all
classroom training. But if you see a tanker flying around Redding or
Palo Cedro (east of Redding where they normally train - being close
to the airport incase of any "rookie" problems but still out of the
airport's way) then tune in the tanker freqs......

I don't know which Victor Net they will be using so try all - they
use those during training....
http://www.norcalscan.org/fire/cdfair.html
They can be found on ANY freq listed in above website but most likely
will be heard below...
151.295 Air Tactics 5 (was formally CDF Green Air)
168.625 Air Guard
123.975 RDD CDF Ramp Control
134.975 RDD USFS Ramp Control (not sure if still current)

123.975 seems to be CDF ground control at all the air
attack bases around the state. I also will be getting
the 2001 plan very soon :)

Mike, are you going to post it somewhere?
If not, I would like to have a copy by email.
We occasionally have fires here in the southern Sierras that the CDF drops
on.

Thanx
