Ok, ok, so it's an Oregon fire..but wowser, working hard!

http://www.pnw-team2.com/florence/index.html Very good site, very good updates.
:)

The Florence and SourBiscuit fires are expected to merge, which will span the
CA/OR border.

The Shelly fire, about ten miles out of Gasquet (pronounced GasKey, by the way
LOL!), has a site at http://www.r5.fs.fed.us/sixrivers/incident/shelly/

Whew - voice tones sounded more threatening than the fire. 2 acres
per air attack with wind in their favor. Engines making good
progress. No more updates.

Simplex is simple, with a letter x.. ;) All it means
is that the transmissions arent going thru a repeater.
Kinda like those FRS radios, you are transmitting ht
to ht. Unit to unit. Thats all simplex is. So when you
hear an engine say go to simplex or what evere they
are not using a rpeater they are talking radio to
radio its retty much line of site, much like a CB
radio.

Working isnt the half of it! The Oregon Fire is Working 200% Overtime! I
was just up there and we had to leave the area of the Florence fire and we
went over to the Medford and Ashland area and there was smoke and ash all
over our car and farther from there also. So the fires are really causing a
stir up that way.

Berry Creek volunteer firefighter gets six years

By TERRY VAU DELL/MediaNews Group

When Berry Creek volunteer firefighter Reed Rankin looked for his "structure
hose nozzle," it wasn't there.

For two months, until the copper piece could be replaced, "We had to use a
wildland fire nozzle, which isn't as good in attacking (house) fires," the
assistant fire chief observed.

Fortunately, there were no mountain rescues at the time, or Berry Creek
Volunteer Fire Company 61 would have been entirely out of luck - someone had
also stolen the station's only rescue ropes.

When sheriff's deputies served a search warrant last February, the vital
equipment, along with thousands of dollars in other property stolen out of the
fire station and several surrounding homes, was recovered in the garage of one
of their own.

Scott Silverthorn, 31, who at one time held the rank of volunteer fire captain
at the Berry Creek station, was sentenced to six years in prison Thursday after
pleading no contest to the thefts.

He was ordered to pay nearly $38,000 in restitution to his victims, including a
fellow firefighter and a medical-aid patient, whose home he burglarized after
dismantling the alarm system, according to Butte County Sheriff's Office
reports.

In a 21-count criminal complaint, Silverthorn was charged with operating an
illegal "chop shop" and stealing or being in possession of several vehicles,
including four all-terrain vehicles, as well as safety equipment and other
property taken from the California Department of Forestry and his own volunteer
fire company in Berry Creek.

One of the victims wrote the court that Silverthorn had broken into his home and
taken more than $14,000 in property after "casing it" during a medical-aid call
when the man's wife broke her leg.

"Firefighters are seen as the first line of protection in a community," noted
Judge Stephen Benson Thursday.

"By the defendant's acts, he struck a terrible blow ... (and) broke a very
sacred bond and trust," the judge said in handing down the six-year prison term.

Silverthorn's attorney, Grady Davis, contended the ex-firefighter was being used
as a "sacrificial lamb," pointing out that a co-defendant in the case drew only
a 120-day jail term for his part in the crimes.

But deputy district attorney Mark Murphy pointed out the other defendant could
only be tied to one of the stolen ATVs recovered from Silverthorne's Hidden
Springs Road residence in Berry Creek.

Leroy Tipton, the owner of the double-wide mobile home, used Thursday's
sentencing to serve a small-claims lawsuit outside of court against Silverthorne
for alleged damage to the rental.

Tipton told the Enterprise-Record/Mercury-Register the home was so infested with
"cockroaches and garbage," he estimates it will cost him as much as $15,000 to
make it habitable again.

While inspecting the debris on July 14, the property owner said he had to rescue
his wife when a fire suddenly erupted in a crawl-space under the house.

The fire, which did about $5,000 in damage, has been termed "suspicious" and is
now under investigation by local and state fire inspectors, according to Tipton.

Silverthorn, who until Thursday had been free on bail awaiting sentencing,
worked as a volunteer firefighter in Berry Creek for about six years before he
was arrested for the rash of thefts in February.

Four of his fellow firefighters attended his sentencing Thursday to request the
"maximum punishment."

That is the only way that Berry Creek residents "will regain their confidence in
the fire department," said Reed, assistant chief of the eight-man community
volunteer fire company.

Volunteer Fire Capt. Steve Zuk had a more personal reason for seeking justice.

Silverthorn had stolen property worth more than $5,500 out of his home while Zuk
was on duty in the Bay Area.

He felt particularly betrayed, having been the one who recommended Silverthorn's
promotion to fire captain.

"Thanks to Scott, I trust no one," Zuk told the judge. "He stole tools that were
just tools to him, but to me they were tools left to me by my dad, who died when
I was a kid."

The fire captain reminded the judge: "He also stole emergency equipment from the
volunteer fire department and CDF that ... put the lives of the entire community
in danger."

Silverthorn remained silent. He had written a letter earlier to the judge
expressing his "shame and sorrow."

Benson said he believed the ex-firefighter was "truly remorseful."

While he is in prison, the judge urged Berry Creek residents to "reach out and
help" the defendant's wife and four young children.

Moonlight Bunny Ranch? Units will stay on scene overnight? No wonder units
are rolling from 18 miles away for that assignment. I wonder if Don or Tim
could pull together a testosterone-impaired OES Strike Team to help out.

   Hi everyone,

I'll be taking a trip up to San Luis Obispo, CA this weekend and I
was wondering if anyone had any frequencies for Law Enforcement or
Fire in the area. Anything will help!

   Thanks,

   Rich
