How and what to post on NorCalFire.

1. Northern California Fire Radio

Any and all questions regarding how to monitor fire radio are welcome on
NorCalFire. This may include how certain agencies work, their frequencies,
methods of operation, and any other info to better our listening hobby. This
list is also used for incident information for fires in Northern California.

2. Common Sense:

We know it's a fire. We know it's a new fire. So don't post New Fire or New
Start in the subject line. By the 2nd message about the fire, it isn't new
anymore. We'll see a new fire started by seeing a post with a new subject line.
This is a pet peeve of mine, and many others. Expect it enforced.

3. Subject Lines:

Get at least the following: County or Jurisdiction, general location, incident
name. Example subject lines that please everybody include:
Butte - Honey Run Canyon
SHF Bolli Incident
Timber Fire, Lassen USFS Turner Mtn
Calavaras - Alpine Lake fire?

4. No one-liners, or one-acres, or thank-yous, or you're-welcomes.

This goes for the "play-by-play" posters. Please combine the information that
you've gathered into a larger post. If you're posting sooner than every 15-30
minutes about a fire, you're posting too much. Wait for a size-up of the fire
before posting. If it sounds like a large incident with lots of radio monitoring
potential, then post it.

No Strike Team deployments, unless they're going to a Northern California fire
that isn't posted on the list yet.

Don't send thank you's (or if one gets through, don't send you're welcomes
back") to the list. If a large fire got covered nicely on the list, and it is
quiet on the list, and you were directly affected by the posts regarding that
fire, you may thank the list or the particular people. If this is abused, you
will be asked to stop. This just adds to an already busy list.

5. Replying

Read all messages before replying. You might be replying to a question that got
answered ten times already. Also use one message to reply to all items for any
particular topic.\

6. Acronyms
Learn them. Do not complain about them. Too many people on the list use these
acronyms in their daily lives. They do not need to stop when posting to this
list. It is expected of you to learn these acronyms if you want to enjoy fire
radio of any degree. Acronyms are readily available on the Internet. There is a
link to acronyms etc. at the bottom of every post. Use it.

Thanks for joining NorCalFire! If we all follow these rules, the list will run
nice and smooth. If you don't follow these rules, refer to rule #6

1. No whining or complaining.

There is zero tolerance for whining and complaining on NorCalFire. You will be
moderated fast and if you continue, you will be removed from the list. There is
no room on the list for your personal problems. That is what direct email is
for. If you have a problem with someone on the group, try emailing
norcalfire-owner@yahoogroups.com for help.

Do not whine about acronyms. Learn them or look them up. Print them and put them
next to your screen. Too many people on these lists use these acronyms in their
daily lives and will not bow down to your lack of appreciating the hobby. If you
want to enjoy fire radio, learn how to listen to fire radio. We will NOT hold
your hand.

http://fire.norcalscan.org/glossary.html

2. Keep it on topic.

Northern California Fire Radio. If it doesn't involve THREE of those FOUR words,
do NOT post your message. We are not here to learn about what radios you have to
sell, or how to turn on your scanner.

4. Sphere of Influence.
So the fire is 200 miles from you? Don't worry about it. We don't need to know
if your second cousin's best friend's sister lives 10 miles away and you want
every little detail about the fire. The person who posted about the fire will
post more info as they see fit. If you know of immediate family in the area, you
may ask the poster privately, using their direct email. Don't use the list
please. You will be moderated if this is abused.

Choose your home and stay put. If you live in Fresno and have a keen interest in
Butte County fires, then move to Butte County. Do not live vicariously through
the list and ask every little detail about incidents in Butte County. Etc. Etc.
Etc.

5. Replying

Read all messages before replying. You might be replying to a question that got
answered ten times already. Also use one message to reply to all items for any
particular topic.

6. Moderation

New members are automatically placed on moderation. This is mainly to stop the
spam that has become pervasive on the system. It's also so that we (the
moderators) know that you're okay, and not some kind of wierdo. You'll come off
moderation when we feel that it's okay to turn you loose to the list.

Once off your initial moderation, you generally have to screw up really bad to
be put back on moderation. One of the things that we will not tolerate is
incivility. We are all adults here, and those of you between 13 and 18 should
have enough maturity to act like an adult. We can disagree without being
disagreeable. If you've been placed on moderation, you'll be taken off when the
moderators think you can be trusted again. If you keep being put in moderation,
we may ask that you leave so our time is not wasted in holding your hand and
babysitting you.

7. Have fun!

This list is for getting the information about fires in NorCal out, so we all
know what's going on. The news media isn't very much help in getting the
specifics out, and you can listen to the incidents as they unfold.

If you have any questions, complaints, or suggestions, email them to norcalfire-
owner@yahoogroups.com and we will try to get to them as soon as possible.

Gas Cost Spike Has Firefighters Changing Response
Big Fire Trucks Won't Roll On Every Call
VISTA (AP) ?
Spiking fuel costs will soon change firefighter responses in the San Diego
County community of Vista, where huge fire trucks will stop rolling on every
emergency call.

A new "priority dispatch system" will determine if those big engines are needed
on calls. Fire Chief Gary Fisher says dispatchers at the North County Dispatch
Joint Powers Authority are now being trained.

Currently, firefighter and paramedics crews respond to all emergency 911
medical-aid calls. The priority system has dispatchers asking 911 callers a
series of questions to determine the amount of emergency personnel needed.

Sounds like they're just doing regular EMD. CCEMSA has been doing that
for years. Fire only rolls on "Priority 1 Medical" calls, which are
any compromise to the ABCs, i.e. Cardiac, Difficulty Breathing,
Choking, severe bleeding, etc. or if the EMS unit has an extended ETA.

Fire is at SR 96 postmile 24.50, which is about 1 1/2 miles north of
the Hwy 169 junction. The CDF units have quite a drive, as it's
roughly 60 miles from the 101/299 interchange in Arcata, plus their
drive to that point. I heard some traffic about crews from High Rock
and another camp, but didn't pick up the details.

Anybody know the weather up there? It's all fog/clouds in Eureka.

About 5 miles further north at the Yurok RAWS in the canyon, half an
hour ago it was 49 degrees with 87% RH. Wind gusts out of NW at 13.

Yurok's utility is still the only person onscene at 22:12, but HIA E564
just now reported enroute, plus Alder Crew 5 and High Rock Crew 1
responding, probably at least 2 hours ETA.

Jake just posted the current weather obs, and at Orleans the high today
was 85° no precip.

Sorry for the delay in replying, Mark. Yes, all three Ferraras are in
service. Type-3 "Brush" engine 8239 (2007 Ferrara, 4x4, International
chassis) is at Mad River Station. That "benefit assessment" vote was
the best thing that's happened for them in a long, long time, three new
engines and 24/7 staffing at Mad River and McKinleyville stations

The new narrowband tac frequencies, 151.1225 and 155.7675, are
scheduled to go into service next Monday, May 12. They will replace
the tac frequencies they've been sharing using until now: Willow Creek's
153.83 and 154.31, and Petrolia's 154.145.

Also, Eureka FD and Humboldt Fire District #1 will be going to the
countywide numbering system soon, EFD will be 8300s and Humboldt #1 will
be 8100 series. A number of departments are using the system already,
but I haven't kept track. Has anyone?

Control burn on private property has been burning since Sunday. Putting
up a lot of good smoke. It finally went berserk tonight when the winds
picked up. TGU response with 3 Salt Creek crews, multiple local gov
engines from the west side, some Type 3's and a couple of dozers. This
is in addition to the private dozers that belong to the property (who
happen to be Ehire dozers and have fire radios in them). Total of 6 dozers?

At 2215, winds on the ridge are gusting ENE at 18 with RH of 56. Valley
winds peaking at 27 out of the NW. Good glow and flame lengths seen from
the west edge of Red Bluff. Extreme torching of some trees that
practically triples the glow intensity once every minute or so.

AA 410 and Tanker 82 out of Columbia, as well as Tanker 76 diverted
from the air attack "class" taking place in Redding this week. I just
saw AA returning back to Redding out of my office window 20 minutes
ago. I believe Copter 205 and its crew is working it as well. It is
terrain that I wouldn't want to be driving a dozer through at night.
Very steep canyon walls and gullies everywhere.

Winds picking up again in Cottonwood for the afternoon.

There is presently a wildfire burning above Oroville in the Feather Falls area.
It had been contained but the winds last night kicked up a bit and now it's
making runs and showing increased torching and crowning. There has been talk of
closing the Feather Falls recreation area due to blowing embers. On site
commanders are requesting air resources but are being given extended ETAs due to
other area fires. Two tankers and two helicopters are on order. The fire is
presently making major runs in every direction and the radio reports by scene
commanders are growing more and more concerned. This is definately something to
keep an eye on. More info as it becomes available.

Scene commander reported in with approximately 20 acres and concern for the
increased winds from the east that are forecast to start very soon. More
resources are being called for. Can sort of be heard on the Butte County Public
Safety Scanner but it doesn't appear to be on a repeating freq so it fades in
and out. Sorry.

I just received a call from the PIO of Butte County Fire and the fire has blown
up to 50 acres and the winds are howling. More and more resources are being
requested and a third tanker is on order. It sounds like this is going to be the
first big one in Butte County this year. Fortunately, the area is pretty remote
and there are no structure threats at this time but if this can't be knocked
down soon, it could be trouble.

Tom - you should be able to hear the command on Butte Support 154.415.
They're using the Sunset Hills tone though and I've heard that's hard
to hear from anywhere in the north.

Butte SAR doing the evacuations on and around the trailhead. They're
anticipating lots of hikers due to the amount of cars at the trailhead.

Industrial fire and vegetation fire to go with it, requesting all the

All on norcalscan.org live scanner - although tactical is a little
scratchy.

Extra engines responding are reducing to code 2 or canceling. The
school shelter-in-place should be for smoke only. Sounds like the
structure fire portion is knocked down now. Quite the little chaos
call for the city. I'm stuck at work out of town.

And now S&R is performing a TR at the Kelly Ridge Visitor's Center for a patient
complaining of heat exhaustion and chest pains. When it rains, it pours. Good
luck, Mike.

I was up in Hangtown for a seminar, and we could smell the smoke and hear the
radio traffic on all the command channels. It was about 10 acres when they got
in with a hot wind feeding it. They immediately started calling for all kind of
resources including crews, engines and aircraft. I'm not sure what's going on
now, but I did see ST9410C headed north as I was heading south through
Livingston.
