What is CURE: The NoRagging Group

CURE was started by two students in the year 2001 under the banner of The
NoRagging Group. We started with an Online Discussion group and an informative
website. From that time, we have come a long way and today we are in process of
joining an NGO as an independent unit under them. We aspire to mature to an
independent NGO by next year.

I will like to take you through our journey and activities across these three
years. For the first year CURE was basically an online group and extended
help by educating public about the phenomenon of ragging and extending support
to victims through emails.
In the year 2002, Harsh and Rajiv joined CURE and gave it a new lease of life.
At the same time, many dedicated members including Kiran, Rajan Srivastav,
etc. joined our group. This year and the coming year was an era of activity
which also led to the re-christening of The NoRagging Group to Coalition to
Uproot Ragging from Education.
Due to Rajan Srivastav, we were able to publish the story of Harsh far and
wide through an NGO magazine, thus making public more aware. Rajiv helped
us organizing a talk at Unnatis (NGO) Seminar. This paved way and CURE
addressed talk show on Sab TV, organized talk show for DD-Bharti, etc.
Today, CURE has matured, it has a clear understanding of what it wants to do,
what are its policies, has an organizational structure and a list of projects it
want to take-up.
Welcome to CURE, we require your support to end the menace of ragging.

CURE Principle
CURE is against severe physical and sexual ragging, while we are open to
discussion on mild forms of ragging.

Objectives of CURE
Dent the public opinion about ragging by spreading awareness.
Maintain a record of ragging incidents, news, measures, etc. to
create a permanent reference.
Convince faculty and institutions to start Anti-Ragging Programmes.
To devise alternate interesting means of interaction between
freshers and seniors.
Prevent ragging by setting up CURE Student Chapters at colleges.
Counsel victims and help them get justice.

Implementation Projects
Publication of a periodical to update you about ragging.
Maintenance of the online website with constant updating.
Arrange talks at colleges, NGO seminars.
Establishment of Student Chapters at colleges.
Arrange an all-India essay competition on ragging to divert attention
of public towards ragging.
F-CURE: Arrange a network of faculty cooperation across India to
prevent ragging.
 Arrange a mega-seminar on ragging.
Try to put-up an activist movement
to get justice to ragging victims.

How we work at CURE?
CURE has a hierarchy on the lines of NGOs, which gets elected democratically
annually. The idea of hierarchy is to streamline energy and reach decisions,
while management is very flexible.
CURE members have brainstormed many projects as noted in the previous
section. CURE looks for people who could get involved in these projects (or
conceptualize new ones) as conveners or volunteers.
These project are/will be managed by conveners independently with support
from all CURE members.

What CURE is looking for?
Volunteers for taking movement against ragging forward.
Financial Aid for financing various CURE projects.
Reciprocal links with educational institutions and organizations.

Did you know that...
CURE has evolved from an initial membership of just 4 to 170 members.
CURE has chapters at Delhi, Bombay, Pune, Kanpur and (soon in) Bangalore.
The CURE website is the only online dedicated forum to condemn ragging.
CURE has contact with noted psychiatrist, Dr. V. M. Sharma, Vimhans for
online counseling of victims.
CURE has presented seminars at Unnati (NGO), organised DD-Bharti Show, etc.
CURE had actively pursued Harshs case through letters and emails to serve as
an eye opener to the society.
CURE is in contact with international organizations such as Play for Peace
and Ofafoo to work together and initiate innovative activities in colleges.

Dear Members,

In the sixth year of its existence CURE is finally successful in entering into a phase where colleges are approaching it for formal tie-up with to curb ragging. Last year CURE apprised BIMTECH Director of severe ragging incident taking place in its institute, the college administration took serious steps to control ragging and set up an expert committee to find out ways to make the campus Ragging-Free. This year two professors from that committee contacted CURE and sought its help in preparing guidelines to stop ragging besides many other activities.
Yesterday members from CURE Delhi chapter met those two professors to give final shape to CURE-BIMTECH partnership, not only this the professors also expressed their desire for affiliation of CURE with the other educational intuitional being run by Birla Foundation to make them ragging free too.

I have hopes that taking example from BIMTECH many other educational institutions will come forward and will take proactive steps to make their campus ragging free.

Regards,

Harsh Agarwal

Dear CURE Members

As the Communication Head of CURE, I want the following details of all the members (active/dormant) --

  1. Name
  2. Contact numbers (mobile and landline)
  3. Residential address
  4. Chapter you are affiliated with
  5. E-mail id(s)
  6. Period you have been associated with CURE

Dormant members -- Please send the above mentioned details to me ASAP. Secondly, dont be dormant. Your opinion, about the various issues that come up for discussion, matters a lot. You might not realise it but its a fact. As of now, its like, just 10-15 of us dominate the group while the rest of you stay in the background. So what is happening is that we take a decision and we thrust it on all of you. As the Communication Head, I dont want CURE to function like this. Its no point boasting to the world outside that we are a 400 members strong group although in reality its just 15 of us who actively participate. 15 in front of 400 is like a drop in front of the ocean!!

All -- If you are not comfortable sending the above mentioned details on the group, you can send it to me on any of the following mail ids: vidya1512@... , vidya3ns@... , vidya.swamy@...

PLEASE DO SEND THE DETAILS. If you sincerely want CURE to grow as an organisation, all the 400 members HAVE to participate. I personally request all the dormant members to start taking an interest in CURE and its activities. Also, if any one of you come up with any idea whereby CURE can function even better, without any second thought or hesitation, put it on the common mail id(s).

Chapter Head(s) -- Pls mention which chapter you are heading along with the above mentioned details.

Naviin Agarwwal and Dr. Neeraj Tripathi -- Please mail me or send on the common mail id, the developments in Allahabad regarding CURE.

Hi Friends,
Life is full of ups & downs... its known to everybody, so I won't
like to give any lecture on this. I would just like to remind
ourselves of one little saying-

The saying they used in the Movie "Black"

An opportunity to do something good in life doesn't come always.

So when we have such a unique opportunity to do our bit for our
innocent brothers and sisters- trying to save them from being
tortured mentally, physically, sexually...in the name of
RAGGING... we must try our best to save them.

We may do something to save them...
Thus we ll also do something for Healthy Education...
And we ll do something for the society

AT LEAST WE SHALL DO SOMETHING GOOD IN LIFE!

Dear friends,

As you all know that last year we bought the noragging domain and the webspace and shifted to a new server and hosted noragging site as a completely independent one, as a result we lost all the search engine points which the old noragging website had earned in its five years of existence. In those five years the old site received more than 20,000 hits and use to come on the first page of google search engine whenever the word Ragging was searched by anyone, anywhere in the world.

Many students and strangers who are looking for anti-ragging organization are now finding it difficult to reach to our website because now our website is on a totally new server and it has to earn those search engine points once again to get back to the top pages of Google. Therefore I would request all the members of CURE yahoo group to please visit www.noragging.com website daily (at least once) so that our website bounces back to the top pages on google search engine and freshers and victims of ragging could find the noragging website easily during their hour of need.

I hope everyone would take this mail seriously and would help us in this least and the easiest possible way to fight against ragging.

Regards,

Harsh Agarwal

Dear members..

I'm anjali and i've just finished my12th and eagerly waiting to step into a new world leaving behind my secure and comfortable zone. As any other teenager i'm very much anxious to experience the change but i'm equally scared to step into the new path. Recenty , when i enquired about the different medical colleges i was shocked to the core to realise the various ragging pratices being practised.Mostof the victims [ some cases the witnesses too]suffered so much from the POST TRAUMATIC DISORDER and were emotionally shreded. Most of the parents , like mine, think they have to send their child to a different region , a little away from thier safe zones inorder to train them to face the hardships which might pop up in the later stages of life. But unfortunately when something happens to their child, they would probably be the last people to know and then it would be too late and things might have slipped beyond their control. W hat i wish to share is that students who experience mental, physical or sexual abuse in the name of ragging find it difficult to cop up and face the situation . What they require most at these times are - someone to confide or pour themselves out, someone to boost their confidence and prepare them mentally. They are at a state of complete disaster and feel isolated . However intelligent or whatever be their IQ level , they feel completely useless and often results in suicide. Its really heart breaking that even after so many incidents colleges have failed to enforce a strict abiding law against ragging and such inhuman pratices done under its name. BOYS AND GIRLS , equally, fall victim. While boys are being mostly physically abused , girls are mentally and sexually abused. I express mystrong disapproval and condemnpt . I here by express  my sincere willingness to work for this cause.
I CAN , I MUST , I WILL.

New Delhi, June 25: TRYING to put a lid on cases of ragging, Delhi University has decided to make it mandatory for all colleges to introduce a sealed complaint box to enable victims to drop their complaints.

DU Proctor Gurmeet Singh today said the complaint box will be placed outside each college principal’s office.

The University has also decided to give the colleges more teeth to deal with ragging cases. According to another new order — Clause 5 of Ordinance 15 — colleges will now have the ‘‘authority to exercise all (appropriate) disciplinary powers’’. Shorn of officialese, this means colleges would judge ragging cases on their ‘merit’, and award punishment accordingly.

Singh said the idea behind the sealed complaint box is to guarantee anonymity to the students. The first-of-its-kind move, he said, will give the students, especially hostellers, an opportunity to register complaints without fear. “Also, the presence of this mechanism in itself would act as a deterrent.”

He added: ‘‘According to the nature of the complaint, the colleges have been given the power to decide punishment this year — it could be a small fine of Rs 50 or even expulsion.”

Singh said it will also be mandatory to identify a Disciplinary Resource Person in each college, hostel, department

and faculty.

DU officials define ragging as ‘‘any obscene or unpleasant activity that embarrasses the fresher.’’ This is different from “interacting” with freshers or talking to them about the college’s traditions.

Under Ordinance 15, ragging in any form is banned in DU colleges and, in extreme cases, can invite expulsion for the offender.
