Description
The Nonviolence Discussion group is committed to the Gandhian approach to conflict, satyagraha, i.e., the inseparability of means and ends, ahimsa (nonviolence), "loving your enemy," relative truth, and noncooperation. In past years the group offered an in-depth discussion series on applying the Gandhian perspective from such sources as Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama, Arun Gandhi, Harvard-scholar Gene Sharp, and Civil Rights leaders Bernard Lafayette and Rev. James Lawson. We may do so again in the future. Currently, we want to provided a safe place for Washington, DC area nonviolence advocates and pacifists (both political and personal) to discuss applying nonviolent action and conflict resolution to U.S. government, D.C. area community and even DC peace and justice community issues. We also are interested in better group processes which reflect a long tradition of nonviolent and nonhierarchal organizing, as well as psychological and spiritual aspects of nonviolence. ON TOPIC are nonviolence theory and practice, organizing or announcements of other group's peace and nonviolence events, trainings, etc. OFF TOPIC is advocacy of violence (physical force and destruction of objects or people for political purposes, except in the occassional Plowshares type action where people accept public and legal responsbility for their actions). Also please do not post announcements of events only tangentialy related to work for peace and nonviolence. Participants are encouraged to engage in friendly and nonviolent discourse.
