This list is dedicated to the discussion of contemporary techniques of music composition and expression.
Too many music based email lists are focused on the discussion and procurement of the latest, greatest toys - I should know; I'm on most of them :> If you want gear talk, software talk, or anything not focused on the techniques of genuine creative action and the develop a finished aural product there are plenty of other lists to join.
The list is dedicated to getting the most out of the aforementioned toys. Discussion of melodic writing, thematic development, chord theory, drum programming, practice techniques, sound effects, synth techniques, mixing, mastering, methods of improvisation, are encouraged. In fact, whatever it is that you do to actually >make< your music, as opposed to the latest toy you want to buy, or the last gig you saw, or where you are playing next, are encouraged. Long philosophical arguments aren't, unless you've found some practical use for them.
I want this to be a place where people
- can post unfinished/half finished musical ideas and receive feedback. (That doesn't mean mailing a link to you mp3.com site and a message saying 'check out my songzz!' - don't ask for feedback if you don't have a specific question.)
- discuss the actual creation of melodies/harmonies and sounds; the noise
you make and the techniques that make it.
- ask questions like:
What is making the sound on the mp3 I just uploaded?
I want to be able to do XXX. Can you? How?
I don't know what I want to do with all this cool gear. How should I
start to find out what I really want to do? What are >you< doing?
