Dear No Desalination concerned persons

Saw this in yesterdays 'The West Australian' page 67.

In summary:
-grant applications are now open
-up to $ 250,000 per grant is available
-for fencing,weed,removal,dune stabilisation,protect coastal species,
education etc
-applications close 25 July 2008

Funding could be used to protect, enhance and publicise the sanctity of
the site you are trying to protect from a desalination proposal.

More information is available:

I have added this link in the help folder of links.

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
nodesalination group:

Do you think that the various statements made by the WA Water
Corporation have mislead people to believe that the Kwinana
Desalination Plant is powered by wind power.

o Yes they have misled me and many other people
o Yes they have misled me

Taking Water Corporation's comments on face value led me to
assume that the WA Water Corporation could back up its
claims that the proposed Binningup desalination plant would
be powered by renewable energy.

o Yes I and many other people I know have been misled

Subject: Binningup Desal Action Group PER Submission uploaded to site

Dear all desalination concered people

I have just uploaded the Binningup Desalination Action Group's PER
submission to the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority
dated 13th of June 2008.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nodesalination/files/
(click on groups concerned or opposed)

This submission is packed with 86 pages of information about the
environmentally harmful impact of building a massive desalination plant
in a remote coastal ecosystem.

The plant will threaten a number of rare and endangered species
inhabiting the plant site however it will also have the same adverse
impacts on the environment as any other plant planned to be constructed
in Australia such as:
-air pollutants
-marine pollutants
-solid waste disposal
-hypersaline discharges
-low disolved oxygen levels in ocean depressions near the plant
-noise and vibration
-construction impacts on the community
-construction dewatering
-seawater intrusion
-acid sulphate soils
-energy use
-powerline hazards
-access to land from powerlines and pipelines
-effects on residents
-property values
-visual amentity
-beach access
-social problems form large construction workforce
-effect on seagrass
-effects on, fish and tiny biota
-effects on cetaceans, turtles, penguines etc
-effects on land animals, tiny and microscopic soil creatures
-effects on migratory birds
-carcinogenic THM's in the product water
-risk assessment
-attracting heavy industry
-etc

I suggest you read this and post any comments to the group.

Please load in any submissions to the yahoogroup that you or other
groups have prepared on the same issue.

Dear Group

On the 24th of July at the Sheraton hotel Perth 9 am the Department of
Climate Change is holding an information session about their Green Paper
on emissions trading.

I unfortunately cannot attend due to a hospital procedure.

I urge everyone who can attend to call 1800 057 590 to register asap.

Please go there and make a noise about the CO2 emissions from Kwinana
270, 000 tonnes per annum and Binningup twice this.

Regards

Michael Derry

See Perth catchment rainfall updated at;
http://www.warwickhughes.com/blog/?p=187
There never was a rain shortage to justify seawater desalination

From the Orange Coast Voice newspaper in Orange County, California,
where two large desalination plants by Poseidon Resources Inc. are
moving through the approval process. The OC Voice is a progressive
monthly newspaper for the area. As its publisher and editor, I was also
a founding member of Residents 4 Responsible Desal, a Huntington Beach
group active in opposing Poseidon's plans. I am no longer active in the
group, but our newspaper follows local desalination news regularly and
in depth. Here are some recent articles published on the blog:

You might also want to check out the older version of the group's
website, still up but not connected to the homepage, because it has lots
of studies, news articles, etc. about desalination and water issues:

and the new website: http://www.r4rd.org/
