Beth,

Thanks for joining the group. I will be going in on Friday for my
2:00 office hours and they run to 4:00. I'll probably be getting
back to the theatre early, around 8:30 or so, to be available for the
Star City Wildcats setup, which will be at 9:00.

Most of the time I'll have my good friend from Charlottesville No
Shame, Ursula Hull on hand. She was technical director at C'ville
NS, until she took over as the Producer when I left. Since there
will be several people coming down from Charlottesville No Shame to
help with the first show, she might be interesting to talk to as well.

Later today or early tomorrow I will have an updated version of the
How To No Shame Book online at www.noshame.org.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Todd

Hey Todd,

I assume Stephanie at MMT told you I'm going to spend this Friday and possibly the following one as well covering what happens at No Shame? It'll be kind of a scene story. What time will you be getting there on Friday night?? We'll want to follow you around a bit before the show to see if you're nervous or calm or whatever.

All Best,

Auditions for the One-Act Festival will be held Monday, Oct. 13, at 7

need anyone and everyone who is interested to come to auditions on
Oct. 13. (We also need men for some of our pieces.) Audition
monologues and further information can be found in the theatre
lobby.

Getting involved might be a good way to get the word out about No

Sure, I'll wear something wildly inappropriate. :)

I'll be there from roughly 2-4, but I have a graduate level class to teach at
the Adult Education Center so I will have to leave at 4 to go get ready for
that.

I haven't heard back from too many people, I know I'm going to be
there tonight, and Kevin from the Roanoke Times, is anyone else
coming?

Let me know so I can give you directions to the house, I don't want to
post them on the message board.

Lastly, those who are on the staff, we need to have some kind of
meeting ASAP about who is doing what, it is only a few days away
before we open, so it is kind of a priority that anyone who is going
to be staff get signed up in the group and get their info posted in
the appropriate databases.

Also, people who are willing to be actors should sign up on the actor
database. I know Richie said he wanted to do acting at No Shame,
maybe more than writing, so he should get on there. I have a piece I
want him to do, but I want to direct him in it and I want it to be
off book, so he should get in touch with me.

Lastly, there will be NS MMT t-shirts soonly conjured out of the
ether. They will sell for some price around $19.95.

Just like admission, nobody gets in one for free.

Todd

Hey gang,

I'm meeting the reporter from the Roanoke Times for a few beers and
to watch some video tapes of Charlottesville No Shame and the
original Iowa City Public Television documentary at my house on
Tuesday night at 9:00.

Anyone out there who is on this list and would like to get a sample
of what No Shame is like, and to meet some of us in advance, is
welcome to come along too. BYOB, though, me broke.

Email me off list to get my address.

I've added a database for members of the group to post who they are,
so that we can get to know each other a little better, and in
addition to the database of actor contact information, I've included
a database for directors.

No Shame is a great way for new directors to get experience. Not all
writers are interested in performing their own work, or directing
their own work--not every actor or director is interested in coming
up with their own writing to get in the line up.

These contact lists will, I hope, be a way to pair up writers and
directors, and allow both to have an easier time finding actors they
enjoy working with.

I hope that members of the group will make use of these databases, as
well as the useful links and opportunity to up and download files.
Writers who want to upload drafts for discussion by the group are
more than encouraged to do so. The great thing about No Shame is
that is is more of a wide open lab for experimenting with performance
than it is a showcase of local talents...sure, it is that, but it is
so much more than that!

Because we want to ensure that there actually WILL be a show on the
opening night, I've set up a database with some people who have
already said they want to come for the first show and perform, many
of them from Charlottesville.

This is likely the only show we will pre-set a portion of the order
for, but I think it is worthwhile to have some veterans on the stage
for the first show, especially if they are coming all the way from
Charlottesville.

Check the database out and if you want to be on the pre-set list for
this opening show, let me know via email and I will add you to the
database.

Thanks, folks, looks like a good lineup already!

Buzz is good, we haven't even opened yet and I've heard a lot of
people tell me they have heard of No Shame. Keep spreading the word
and encourage anyone who is interested in watching, acting, singing,
writing, or helping to join this yahoo group, it will be the main
conduit of information and dialogue about No Shame at Mill Mountain

I've set up an actor's contact sheet in the database section. If you
are interested in acting in No Shame pieces, you can put your contact
information and description of yourself in there.

This way writers who don't know a lot of actors can get in touch with
people to be in their pieces, and actors who can let people know they
are available to do things.

I will also set up a folder in the photos section so that people can
upload head shots if they wish.

Thanks, I think this will be useful

1) don't forget Best of No Shame in Charlottesville this weekend, it
woudl be great if some of our local people could go.

2) I have updated the No Shame Roanoke page from the www.noshame.org
website, check to see if there is anything I need to change (except
the typo towards the bottom which should read "have to do" instead
of "have do" and that the logo in the corner should link directly to
the MMT No Shame pages instead of the MMT main page--I caught those
already.

3) The Star City Wildcats are playing at the Green Dolphin tomorrow
night in the last round of the Battle of the Bands. Come on down to
help them win--they are the band that will be playing at the No Shame
opening on the 17th, and are really cool people. This would be a
nice way to get together and hear some great music and maybe have
some cheap beers. I'll be the guy in the No Shame t-shirt drinking
PBR. ($1.50 a bottle, last I checked) The band are really cool and
they have already listed us as a gig on their website. Let's show
them the same support they are showing us, and help them win that
title of Best Band in Roanoke!!! (check the calendar for more
information)

I've updated the calendar listings at the left to show call times and
performance times for No Shame. Same is true for links. If you want
to upload scripts to the files section, you're perfectly free to do
that too and ask for comments. If we can get actors as well as
writers on this group you can distribute your scripts this way too.

I'm totally cool with members of this group putting up announcements
on the calendar and on the message board for arts related events in
which they are involved, or where they think group members could go
and talk up No Shame to the people there.

Kinds of things I'm looking for are poetry slams, performances of
original music by local musicians or song writers, plays, improv
groups, readings, anything, really.

The great thing about No Shame is that it can stretch your notion of
what is theatre or performable on stage. At other No Shames we've
had dance routines (even fitness areobic routines!), magic acts,
mime, puppetry, live body painting, songs played on a handsaw, hand
mime, the field is so wide open, it boggles the mind.

Encourage anyone who is curious about No Shame to visit the main
website (www.noshame.org) and to click on Roanoke. They will find
the link there for this Yahoogroup.

You can also invite people through the promote or invite links. The
more people we have in this group the more No Shame is going to feel
like a community, where we can really talk about what we're doing.
No Shame works best when people think of it as a lab environment
where people try things and take risks, not a showcase or "talent
show".

It is official, the Star City Wildcats will play an opening set for
the No Shame grand opening on October 17th. They will probably start
playing at 10:30 when we open the doors to the audience, and the show
may start just a little bit late as a result.

This is really exciting, and should bring a nice crowd to the opening
with their inclusion in the publicity and their own mailing list.

Also, the band members do their own original songs as well as
Rockabilly covers, and are interested in using No Shame as a way to
test new material, with luck that idea will get around to other bands
in the area.

Brandon, their bass player also makes marionettes and writes puppet
plays, and he's looking forward to using No Shame as a way to try out
short puppet pieces, which is so cool I can't even begin to describe
it.

Lastly, Jennifer, the band's photographer, is going to bring her
camera to independently photodocument the opening, so we should have
something not too many No Shames have, and that is pictures of the
first performance.

To those on this list, please keep spreading the word, there are
fliers (tri-fold brochures) you can pick up at MMT, or contact me.
Also encourage people who are interested in No Shame to join this
group, since it is a great way to get info about No Shame as well as
discuss what you see and/or want to do there.

Thanks,

Todd

I've been talking to the guys at Star City Wildcats, a local
rockabilly band (see links) and they said they'd be happy to play the
opening night of No Shame on October 17th.

Have to clear it with the theatre and work out details, but that
would be a great way to kick it off, maybe have a dance party
afterwards.

Woo hoo!

Thanks for the offer but I'll have to say no for now - we're getting
married at the end of September and things are busy til then.

Raincheck til October maybe? (Not sure if my partner will be up for
this, but I can possibly co-opt someone else to join me! Besides I love
those shoes)

Laura? You and your significant other??? We bowl on Sunday nights,

I'm putting links to websites of some interesting local folks I'd
like to see perform at No Shame.

Anyone who is a member of this site can put a link up for your own
self or for people you'd like to see at No Shame.

We need to really network and grow like a community, and that means
word of mouth. Don't rely on posters or ads. If you see someone
performing, or reading, or playing, or dancing and you think they'd
be good at No Shame, then tell them about No Shame.

And get out the word and try to get people to sign up to be part of
this group.

Laura,

I'd be happy to hang around a little longer. I think you just go in
and tell the guy at the desk that you want to see me, I'll be
downstairs in the office at a computer workstation writing my No
Shame piece for tomorrow night. See if Dwayne wants to meet us and
maybe we can grab a beer or something.

I'm having office hours at MMT every Friday from 2:30 to 4:00, but
can hang around there this friday to talk to you for a bit. Then I'm
heading up to Charlottesville to go to that No Shame tomorrow night.

I've also set up a yahoo group for No Shame Roanoke at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/no_shame_theatre_roanoke/

If you want to join, it might be useful.

The three main rules are:

1) Nothing that is NOT original, meaning NO copyright infringement in
any aspect of the piece.

2) All pieces must be UNDER 5 minutes.

3) You CAN'T BREAK ANYTHING, this primarily means laws. You can't go
onstage and do ANYTHING that is illegal. No actual murders, shooting
up, etc. Simulated law breaking is ok, unless that is also breaking
the law. In many states and I am sure in Virginia, simulated sex
with even a simulated minor is illegal. Finding out what is illegal
and not doing it is your responsibility. Also, you can't break the
theatre, you can't break the audience, and can't break your actors
and you can't break yourself. Don't do anything onstage that will
require a lot of clean up after you. With 15 short pieces we don't
want a 10 minute scene change between pieces.

> * Scripts on stage? Allowed, discouraged, banned?

Each piece needs to be entirely self contained--bring your own props,
costumes, and so forth. Script in hand is fine, and pretty much the
norm, however we want YOU to be the person who sets your bar on how
your scripts are performed. Some pieces are done entirely cold, some
have been rehearsed for months. Please do whatever will suit the
piece best...Also, remember that you need to bring enough scripts for
everyone, and one extra for the stage manager.

The stage manager will keep this and give it to the Light Board
Operator. Scripts need to accurately reflect what is done on stage--
and that means even if you are doing an improv you have to have an
outline and keep to it. Also, these scripts are retained for our
archives. This will allow us to help decide what pieces we will
showcase in any "best of" collections we do. Authors retain all
right to the material, of course. For this reason we also ask that
you have contact information for the author as well as a list of your
actors.

> * Props?
> * Costumes?

All fine, no real restrictions other than you can't throw a bunch of
real prop gasoline around and light it with a real match. Also you
are responsible for props, costumes, actors, and so forth--bring what
you need, you won't be allowed access to anything in the theatre's
costume closet, props bin, or anything else. Don't force anyone on
stage with you from the audience either, we want everyone to embrace
risk taking, but we don't want sitting in the audience to be a risk
they don't want to take.

Admission is $5, and you have to pay if you sit in a seat, whether
you are a writer or a performer or what. The thing about No Shame is
that it isn't a regular performance, it is a lab where everyone
participates and shares in the cost of keeping the doors open. You
aren't paying $5 so you can do your 5 minute piece, please think of
it as paying $5 to watch 14 other people do theirs. It is a
community, not a showcase. That may not seem like much of a
distinction, but it is an absolutely vital one to understand.

Also, no booze will be sold, because we are wanting to have
involvement of a wide range of ages. Having to check IDs all night
would keep me from watching the theatre work, and I'd rather do that
than card people. Drinking at an actual bar before and after while
discussing theatre is very very much encouraged...if you are of legal
age, of course.

Have a look at:

Where you will find some sample scripts, photos, reviews, etc for a
better idea of what this No Shame business is all about.

Also try listening to:

This is a sound file recording of a WVTF public radio story on No
Shame.

For more information than you would ever want to know about No Shame
visit this link:

http://www.ristentltd.com/MANWEB/index

It looks like homoerotic material from the URL, but MANWEB stands for
Manual Website combined. What was I thinking? Anyway, this is an
online version of the print text I wrote with No Shame co-founder
Jeff Goode. It is a very good source for information on how a No
Shame works. You can get a print copy with a plastic no beer spill
cover for the low low price of ten bucks, but if you don't have any
money you can read it all online for free at the above URL.

That's about it...if you or the others have more questions or want to
arrange a time to get together and talk about it all over beers, let
me know. Also, if you want to come up to Charlottesville some Friday
to try it out there before October 17th, let me know and we can hook
up a road trip.

Thanks,

Hope this helps, sorry I have been so hard to get in touch with.

Thanks for coming by and checking out NS MMT (No Shame Mill Mountain
Theatre.

We're starting October 17th.

We'll be in the Waldron stage most Friday Nights at 11:00, and
admission is $5 for everyone who takes up a seat in the audience
(this includes actors, writers, pets, whatever.)

We start taking scripts at 10:30 and take the first 15 pieces to show
up at the door. The show starts as close to 11:00 as possible.

Staff will be at the theatre by 10:00, and if possible we will let
people into the theatre in small groups for a quick look at the stage
configuration and what lights are available that night, there won't
be a place or time to rehearse or do a run through in the space--so
have your piece ready to travel!

All pieces must be original (no copyright violations), under 5
minutes, self contained, and they must not break any laws. You can't
endanger the theatre, the audience, your performers or yourself.

Other than that pieces can be pretty much anything you want to do.
Scenes, monologues, dance pieces, mime, stand-up, puppetry, songs,
instrumental, magic, clowning, improvisation, shadow, kabuki,
whatever.

You need to bring enough scripts for your actors and one more for the
stage manager to give to the Light Board Operator. This script must
have light cues indicated. We keep these for our archives, but we'll
never do them again without your permission. We will have periodic
buffet performances -- sort of the Best Of -- at a normal hour like
8:00pm so that people who haven't been can get an idea of what it is
all about. In this case we need to have a reminder of what your
script was about, how to contact you, and who was in your piece. Put
all that on the script you give us.

If you have other questions, just ask here, or send me an email.

Also, check out www.noshame.org for more detailed info.

There are other message boards there, a link to a How To manual,
links to other No Shames too. Try clicking on Charlottesville to get
an idea of what another No Shame in Virginia is like. Look at the
sample scripts in the on-line script library, the pictures, and the
press clippings.

In no time you will be an expert.

See you at the theatre!

Todd
