Tomorrow is Nichiren's birthday, Tanjo, Otanjo or Otanjo-e. He was born on
February 16, 1222 in Kominato, a small fishing village in Japan. His parents
were Mikuni no Tayu (Nukina Shigetada), a fisherman, and Umegiku-nyo, his wife.
They named their son Zennichimaro.
The legend says that both parents experienced unusual dreams before his birth,
omens for their son's life. On the day Nichiren was born, lotus flowers
bloomed, a large number of fish (red snapper, indicating good fortune) appeared
in the sea, and fresh water sprang out of the earth in front of the house.
Nichiren Buddhist Temples of various denominations have special ceremonies for
this day. In the USA, the main ceremony usually takes place on the Sunday
closest to the actual date. I know that at least in some temples, children
receive gifts
If your temple, community center or group does something special for this
occasion, please let us know. If you, yourself celebrate it in any way, we'd
love to hear about it. Do any of you observe Nichiren's birthday at your home
altar? I do. Since I have no sect/school affiliation, I feel it's especially
important for me to do so. It reinforces the connection and strengthens my
faith while I offer gratitude and respect. And Happy Birthday, of course!
Diana
