Just wanted to say hi. I'm not an owner, but in the early 80's I
worked at Hinterhoeller in the cabinet shop. Chances are if you have
one from 1980-1982 it's got my handiwork in it.

Its good to see so many enjoying George's fine creations. If any of
you have any questions about the ships or the shop where they were
made, I'll do my best to answer them.

While I no longer build sailboats, I am one of the few stained glass
artists is North America who makes 3d glass ships with fully billowed
sails. The R.H.Y.C. recently used my work for the trophies for the
Lilac Regatta last weekend.

Working at Hinterhoeller Yachts was an incredible experience and
lessons learned there have carried through to much of my other work.

Thanks for a great group.

Ken

Welcome Christian,

We do not have very many Niagara 30s in as members and
it is good to have you. Don't worry about your
English...it is better than my French. I am the
website manager. Post your question on the site and
see if you get an answer. I also have a friend who
has a Niagara 30 and maybe he knows. I will ask him.
Make sure you post a picture of your boat on the site.
  Good sailing!

Hi Terry,

I had a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke and I got rid of it for a 8
horse 2 stroke. It has more than enough power and I
can't tell any difference from the 9.9 even though is
it 35 lbs. lighter. Those rules are for boats that
race mainly however and do not cruise for hours on the
engine.

(2) hours going in circles while Burlington Northern tried to open
their old rotating bridge. Took a maintenance crew about an hour to
free the damned thing with crow bars and sledge. It was hot here so
it jammed. the 9.9 just hummmed along, but was a real pain for the
marine service guys to mount correctly. they did a great job.
I may have other things later. The previous owner left me with a
whole lot of nice used North Sails: main, jib , 150, storm jib,
beautiful UK 3/4 oz chute. Boat now has a furler by Harken, which I
may hate before this is over. racing for so many years makes one
fussy about these things.
I think the boat is a jewel, few in the west know about this little
treasure.

It appears that this N26 is still available. If so, my wife and I
will likely go check it out. Another local N26 sold very quickly not
long ago, and I was very impressed by its fit and finish. I almost
wonder why this one has been on the market since December.

If anyone knows more about this boat, or bad/good things to look for
on an 1989 N26, let me know. I know that the manufacturer changed in
1986, and I don't know if Halman has a good or bad reputation for the
ones they did.

Thanks!

I am the owner of #140 built in 1989 by Hallman in Whitby Ontario. The
number one problem to look for is core delamination. A weak point is also
rot of the chain plate attachment to the bulkhead, this is mostly from
leaking deck plates where the chain plates pierce the deck. If any area
feels spongy from the weight of your foot, suspect problems. Have a
professional survey performed for your peace of mind. When I purchased my
N26 a survey and repairs as a condition of sale saved me thousands. large
areas were found needing repairs, this is not at all uncommon with N26's.
Good Luck

Burlington Northern from Portland Or. Home port for
now is Portland OR. I may move her to the Puget Sound
in a year. Finally had enough wind for a nice shake
out sail last Saturday. What a lovely experience.
Broad reached up the Columbia River flying past a
Santana 20 who didn't know where the wind was coming
from. Sails pulled in for a beat and had stalled.
They kept watching me bear down on them and blow by
them to leward. Nice!!

Correction on manufacturers name, its Goman not Halman. I own #140 and it is
as fast as can be expected for a 26'. I believe this to be rumor based on no
factual information, probably started by an owner of a Hinterhoeller built
hull, but of course this is my opinion.

You mean Goman are slow and heavy compared to Halman? There where 3
builders right? Niagara Yacht, Goman and Hulman.

For a "Niagara history lesson" check out garvock's posting of a letter from
Richard Hinterhoeller. This should clear up some confusion on manufacturers
and years built. Do some searches on this website and you may find other
answers to your questions. Again I will repeat, the difference in sailing
characteristics are mostly the differences in sailing ability, tune of
rig(how many people really know how to tune and run a fractional rig
correctly?), condition of sails etc... not the manufacturer of the hull.
There are others associated with this website that are more expert than me,
maybe we will all learn something.

Hello All,

On the question of the differences between the three
manufactures I should put in my 2 cents. From what I
have been able to gather, Niagara Yachts and Gowman
are almost the same in quality of construction and
speed. Halman changed a few things. For instance you
can tell that the spreaders are not swept back on a
Hulman Niagara 26. This is an advantage (some say)
running dead down wind, but going up wind it does not
point as well. Hulman also put more Fiberglas in their
boats which increased the weight by a few hundred
pounds. The quality of the workmanship in the Hulman
hulls too has been questioned, with (supposedly) more
leaking and screws protruding through the hull. Other
than these observations that is all that I have been
able to determine.

I agree with Mike. I've got four double old Spinlocks that I replaced last
year. If any one is interested.... Very very cheap.

On our 26 we upgraded to Spinlock XAS clutches and PX 8-12 cam cleats
last season. Very happy esp with the clutches!

By the way, I've got a couple of old sails that I think are in decent shape.
They're yours for the shipping...

John Comeau (N26 owner) and myself are thinking about going up to the GBSR this
upcoming July (in our respective boats), I understand Doug will be there as
well, please go
and check the link, see if u'd be interested: http://www.georgianbaysail.on.ca/

I am still searching for a trailer to take my boat up there, would there be
somebody who
could help in the Simcoe/Georgian Bay area?

Geeez we'd love to do this, but we don't own a trailer and we also race a
J-22. Sounds like a great event.

Hi,

I'm searching for a bow pulpit. Heard of a used one for sale or where I
could have a new one built? I also don't know what price I should
expect to pay for it.

I bought my new pushpit/ladder from:

Stainless Outfitters
110 Saunders Road, Unit 7 & 8
Barrie, ONTARIO L4N 9A8
CANADA
(800) 268-0395

My contact was a fellow named John. Take a few minutes to think about
upgrades you might want, and be sure to measure a couple of times before
ordering. Further questions, feel free to email me directly, or give me a
call.

Cheers, David

Hi Jenny and others thinking of doing the GBSR the
last week in July,

Sorry I have been busy and not checking my mail. Yes
I will be at the Georgian Bay Regatta. I also have a
trailer you can use any time...you just need a vehicle
with at 2" ball and the towing capacity to tow it.
You can also bring it around through the Trent but
that takes a bit of time. We do not have a crane at
Collingwood to lift the boat in however. You must
contract Rob's Crane in Collingwood or take it to the
marina's with travel lifts in Meaford (Richardsons) or
Midland (Dorel or another one up there). If I can be
of any help please let me know. Let me know for sure
if you guys are coming. Are you flying or not? I can
do either, but I am usually white sails.

I will get a plague for the Niagara 26 Championship if
3 or more boats arrive.

Doug Young
242-3873

PS I will be in Scotland for the first two weeks of
July. Other than that contact me at 424-3873.

East coast Vancouver Island, Niagara 35 (1980), 'Serenus', cable is
frayed. Going down to the dock today to try and dismantle it from the
binacle steering. Any comments before I begin tearing it apart?
Thanks Rod

There are, I believe, three in the Niagara region for sale. What are you
looking for as far as condition, and equipment ?.

Gareth,

Incredible offer on the sails...I would be keen to take you up on the
offer if nobody has accepted your donation.

Otherwise, I am looking for decent shape main and genoa.

P.S.: No other N26s seen on Lake Champlain.

Cheers,

David,

I have removed my pulpit and push pit and all stanchions.

I would be open to discuss a trade for your sails if you have not
gotten rid of them.

Cheers,

Charles

I have used main, #1, #3 that are for sale at a reasonable price if
interested. Are Fogh originals from 79 so alyhough in decent shape
are certainly not as fast as new set.
