Subject: Spring/Launch is in the Air
doomdahdoomdoom

Only four weekends to work on the boat before launch and since it's my first
spring (I bought her in "ready-to-launch" condition last year), I'm making a
list of chores to try to avoid missing anything important...

Would anybody care to share their pre-launch chores/checklist?

So far for things I need to do before she's in the water I've got:
- new spark plugs/gear oil in the outboard and make sure it still starts
- gelcoat repair
- scrape back the flaky sections of the bottom paint
- probably epoxy the keel joint where it's cracked
- paint the bottom with VC17
- wax the topsides
- top up charge on batteries
- reinstall instruments

I've also got a few specific maintenance items to probably get done ahead of
launch:
- rebed both chain plates (starboard side was leaking last summer)
- repair or replace bilge pump (found out it was broken/useless at the end of
last season)
- replace worn-out spin halyard
- test/replace lights on mast

There's probably more to add...

2nd Wind's Hull number is really 98. The first owner of my boat had to
put a 1 in front of the sail number to race because there was already a
# 98 race at his club. The sail number has stayed the same ever since.

We're in and she still floats! It was a beautiful but busy weekend here at
QCYC. All boats went in over Saturday/Sunday. I even managed to get a sail
Saturday evening on a buddy's Viking 28 that had launched a few days early. The
season has officially started - yippee!!

I ran across this ad on Kijiji for an old main that has apparently never been
used:

http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-boats-MAIN-SAIL-FOR-NIAGARA-26-SAILBOAT\
-W0QQAdIdZ115716752

I contacted the poster and got pictures of it sent to me then contacted North to
see if they could help identify it. I was hoping that it might be a steal of a
deal on a new sail for my racing season, but here's what the North rep had to
say:

>From the photos I can see a number of manufacturing and detailing features that
allow me to estimate the age with reasonable accuracy.
This sail is close to 20 yrs old, and designed as a basic cruising sail - so I
would not expect it to offer the level of performance that you are currently
enjoying.

Anyway, I figured I should pass along the ad to any other N26 owners who might
be looking for a cruising main. She's asking $650.

pictures would be nice.

On our Niagara we bought a new main ($2300) in 2004. The boat sailed
flatter and faster. The old main was a bit bagged out and we frequently
had to double reef. the new one allowed single reef in same conditions.
Was well worth it.

Hi all

For the past two springs, I've applied Interlux Bottomkote to the hull. Both
times the paint has been very "chunky" with lots of solid pieces. Last year it
solidified in the painting tray as we were applying it. Is this normal? I
shook the can this year after it had been on the shelf in the basement since
last spring (never opened). Should I have shaken it longer (like for 10 minutes
or some crazy thing?)

I would suggest getting rid of that paint an use VC17. You have to
completely clean the hull however before applying it. You may also want to
apply a barrier coat such as inter-protect as well. Big job but well worth
the effort.

Deck is cored with 1/4 inch end grain balsa.

On Sloop du Jour excessive moisture was present in about 40% of the deck
areas. Recored with balsa core and with solid laminate plate G-10 in
areas penetrated by hardware. Hardware was bedded with 3M 4200. This
was done almost two years ago and appears to have worked.

It would have been the same as the balsa core. I still have some at home
and I'll measure and get back in da or 2.

Hi Gary,

Some time ago I rebedded the windows, teak handrail and inside genny
track on Panache with 4200. Leaked a bit before I started, leaked
like a sieve afterwards. Operator error, no doubt.

I have just rebedded the whole lot (and winches as well) with butyl
tape No leaks so far in the light rain we've had, but I plan to take
a pressure washer to the deck today, so I'll let you know how it
works...

Cheers, David

I just rebedded my handrails and resealed my chain plates and . I used 3M 4200.
You really have to force the sealant in around the chain plates. I also
tightened all the nuts on the toe rail and replaced the plexiglass on my
forehatch. For the 1st time that I can remember I have no deck leaks. ( I've had
the boat 28 years). All work was completed mid April.

I made new hand rails about 15 years ago. I got the new teak from Noah's in
Toronto and used the old hand rails as templates.

The decking is all end grain balsa. When I removed my hand rails this time I
drilled the holes in the deck a drill size bigger to clean out all old caulking.
I then made up a thick polyester resin paste and filled the holes. This seals
the balsa. I redrilled new holes in the same spot. To re-install the hand rails,
it really requires 2 people. With new hand rails, 2 people are required.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi y'all!

So, I have pretty much completed the re-bedding of my windows,
handrails and winches. And we've had two rains, plus I've powerwashed
the decks.

The butyl tape is easy to work with, worked wonders (if anyone wants
to try it, email me, I learned a number of cools tricks that made life
easy), and has much to recommend it. I have used about 70 linier feet
of it (for a total of less than $25) so far. Almost all of the leaks
are sealed tight. A couple need some more work, but the touch-up is
easy: loosen the bolts, jam some more in and tighten up.

I still have leaks. One is from the teak eyebrow, which I plan to
remove and rebed with butyl this summer, and I suspect the hatches
leak as well.

But it's progress!

Cheers, David

Couple of Comments:

1. If you are replacing the hand rails, consider replacing the teak with
stainless steel/chrome - it never needs re-painting!

2. Careful tightening the Toe Rail nuts too tight. If you overtighten you can
squeeze out all the caulking put in at the factory - and end up with more,
not less leaks!

3. What is this 'Butyl Tape'?

4. 3M 4200 is supposed to be the 'Gold Standard'. But keep in mind you
may have to rebed such items again. And removing items so bedded with
4200 is somewhat of a nightmare. An easier re-working bedding is Sikaflex
- 290 I think. Though there may be other better first & Re-working
alternatives.

5. Who / where do you get a new plexiglass Hatch made?

6. Has anyone figured out a cosmetically more pleasing and simple clean
line interior 'edging' around the windows - to replace the big plastic old
fashioned trim?

7. I would be interested in traveller arrangements that meet the need for
frequent adjustment with less than Herculean force - preferably at 'onshore'
rather than 'offshore' prices ? Pictures would be good! Until I decide on a
suitable arrangement, I'm being pressured into making a decision by the
fact of one broken car stop. If anyone has an extra or a source of same I
would be grateful. Current stop - one side only - is a thin Clevis pin!

Fair winds & Good Sailing !

Richard can correct me if I am wrong here, but butyl tape is very much
like (if not in fact what was used) the sealant between the hull/deck
joint. I admit it's a throwback to my flying days, frequently used in
aircraft manufacture as a sealant.

I have used both sikaflex and 4200, without success, and as you
mention, the cleanup is a pain.

On another topic, I decided this winter to pull all the winches on
Panache. Partly to give them a good cleaning and overhaul, partly
because my racing crew wanted some changes in location, and partly to
stop some leaks. The primaries are Barient 25s, the secondaries
Barient 22s, and the coachroof halyard winches Barient 19 STs.

I had a sufficient spare bits to replace the worn pawls and suspect
pawl springs on the 25s and 22s, but the 19s have smaller pawls and
springs. I didn't realize that when I built my spares kit. Does
anyone know where I can get springs for a 19? Any suggestions would
be most appreciated.

Thanks, all! Cheers, David
