KATRINA UPDATE 4
By Sherry Stultz
Friday, September 3, 2005

Last night was tough. I felt my reserves slipping as Astra has a sore
throat, fever and is extremely grumpy. She had a nightmare last night and it
finally occurred to me my confusion is slipping onto her. Apparently a
grizzly bear was trying to eat her. She was terrified. I have got to take
better care of myself.

I was trying to fall asleep and my cell phone rang and it gave me such a
start I jumped right out of bed. I have been able to call out for a week,
but no calls in. It was Astra's dad, Vince. They had some power restored to
Jackson County.

He rambled on for a good twenty minutes about everything that was happening.
His choice to stay was his, but I do not envy him and I will not go back to
Ocean Springs until all the gun-wielding looters are gone. Apparently a FEMA
truck driver was shot in the chest and his truck hi-jacked in D'Iberville
(north Biloxi). Looting in Ocean Springs has been rampant and there are so
many missing people that folks who stayed behind are in a state of shock and
bewilderment. News is also slow to get to them.

The Ocean Springs Wal-mart is supposed to open today at 8 AM, allowing 14
people at a time to enter the store to buy what they need. They are getting
generators in for people to purchase, but it is cash only for all purchases.
Vince and other employees spent several days repairing the roof and other
parts of the building.

Vince said he tried to get to Front Beach to take some more pictures. He has
been taking rolls and rolls of shots around the area since the storm passed.
The police would not allow anyone on the beach and a woman nearby told him
the bodies from residents from Gulf Park Estates had washed on shore.

While I was on the phone with Vince it beeped. Again I was stunned and I saw
it was my dear friend Shannon who I had been trying to contact at her
mother's home south of Jackson, Mississippi all week. I was so glad to speak
to her. My whole chest lifted. She is staying in Vicksburg with a friend
since her mother's home has been without electricity, phone, gas and water
all week and had become unbearable with two small children. She will wait to
return as well. Even as power is restored, there are shortages of all
commodities, especially gas.

The looting has troubled me because it seems now the area has grown and with
it, more and more people who know less and less about each other. The
community is fractured by this growth and the cracks are showing themselves
quite clearly. The police, bless them, are under more stress than ever.
Crime has grown little over the last 20 years, but I don't think they have
ever faced such a tenuous situation with the local populous.

I think tonight Dianne and are going to the movies, which will be a respite
from the internet and TV. I just can't keep watching it.
