THE NUMBER OF LAND-BASED ANIMALS KILLED FOR FOOD IN THE US
World Farm Animals Day
September 25, 2004

http://www.wfad.org/

http://www.wfad.org/mediacenter/victimsreport.pdf

The number of land-based animals killed for food in the US is expected to
rise by 2.5% to 10.2 billion this year, from just under ten billion in 2003,
according to data extrapolated from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics
Service (NASS). This figure does not account for fishes or other acquatic
organisms, who are not counted by any government or industry agency, but are
estimated to exceed the number of land-based animals.

The 10.2 billion total includes 9,390 million "broiler" chickens (up 3.4%
from 9,080 million in 2003), 364 million "layer" hens (down 12.6% from 416
million), 279 million turkeys (down 5.1% from 294 million), 27 million ducks
(up 5.2% from 25.8 million), 128 million pigs (up 3.9% from 123 million),
38.9 million cattle and calves (down 8.1% from 42.4 million), and 3.9
million sheep (down 4.2% from 4.0 million).

The rise in the animal death toll is double the annual U.S. population
increase (currently 294.3 million) and reflects the continuing trend of
switching from cow meat to chicken meat (a cow yields 200 times the amount
of flesh in a chicken). In more personal terms, the average American is
directly responsible for the abuse and death of 2,485 chickens, 78 turkeys
and ducks, 33 pigs, and 11 cows and sheep during a 75-year life span.

Of the 10.2 billion farmed animals expected to be killed this year, 868
million (or 8.7%) will succumb to disease, malnutrition, injury,
suffocation, stress, "culling," or other deadly factory farming practices
before reaching the slaughterhouse. "Layer" hens will experience the highest
rate of non-slaughter death - a staggering 64.5% - primarily because all
males are deliberately suffocated at birth. Also included in the 868 million
are broiler chickens and turkeys who die before being placed in a farm, and
piglets who die before weaning. Most non-slaughter deaths are not reported
by NASS and must be calculated indirectly from hatchery reports, interviews
with industry experts, and other sources.

Globally, the number of animals slaughtered for food in 2003 was 52.7
billion, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. This
conservative figure does not account for non-slaughter deaths,
under-reporting by smaller countries, and many billions of acquatic animals.

The report on the number of victims of animal agriculture is compiled each
year by FARM, a public interest organization, in connection with the annual
observance of World Farm Animals Day on October 2 (Gandhi's birthday). World
Farm Animals Day memorializes the suffering and deaths of innocent, sentient
animals in the world's factory farms and slaughterhouses and promotes
humane, sustainable agriculture. See <http://www.wfad.org/mediacenter> for
details.

Our election-year observance brings factory farm and slaughterhouse
atrocities to the doorsteps of public officials. A number of activists are
holding vigils at state capitols and other government offices. Candidates
for national and state public office are being asked to state their views on
humane treatment of farmed animals. Dozens of governors and mayors are
issuing supportive proclamations.

Activists in hundreds of communities in all 50 states and 20 other countries
are screening videos and arranging information tables, exhibits, leafleting,
marches, vigils, and memorial services. Hundreds of giant billboards and bus
display cards in major metropolitan areas are carrying our message. This
year's observance is co-sponsored by FARM and In Defense of Animals.
