I'd look at at least a base of annuals. Alyssum would make a nice base plant, and pansies should also be flowering, and come in a wide range of colours....

Spinich, silverbeet, leeks(plants), carrots.... That is what I have, I also have beetroot, but I planted that in summer and it lasts right thru the winter...

If I can add to that the walnuts are the seeds. But as Paul says you are better to buy grafted trees. Walnuts take many years to produce (7-14) and seedlings...
