RE: [New Zealand Caterpillar Club] 1939 Caterpillar D2

Ok, do realise that you can adjust the main clutch and the pony motor pinion
clutch. The main clutch is very easy to adjust. If you do not have an owners
manual you can easily get one from Tractor Books (I think it's called). You
will find them selling a lot of manuals on TradeMe. I live in Otago if that is
any help to you.

Subject: RE: [New Zealand Caterpillar Club] 1939 Caterpillar D2

Ok, i checked the number and its a 5J. My father was given the D2 by the family
farm and its been sitting in our shed the last 20 years or so. It still goes as
we have started in the last couple of years but never used it cause of the
clutch. So i asked if i could work on cleaning it up and maybe restoring it, and
he said if i do he would give it to me. So yea im just doing a bit of homework
on it at the moment and working on getting a clutch for it so i can move it
round to work on. I will hopefully take pictures or my work start to finish and
document it. Ill contact Goughs and see what i can find out.Thanks.

> You should find the serial number plate on the engine block next to the pony
clutch lever and on the back of the transmission above the draw bar (or PTO if
you have one) on all Caterpillar tractors. The D2 serial number plate will
start with a 3J, 5J, 4U, or 5U. 3J's started being built in 1938 through to
1947, the 5J's were also built between 1938 and 1947. The 4U was started being
made in 1947 through to 1957, the 5U was started being made in 1947 and was the
last series to be built and they finished in 1957. I don't know how you know
it's a 1939 with out knowing if it's a 5U or not. It is most likely a 3J or a
5J if it is built in 1939. It is important to know the manufacture date and not
the date Goughs imported them from the USA, for historic records prepossess. I
do not have any pony motor parts bar the air cleaner and I do not have the head
off the big motor, but I have 90% of the tractor in parts.

> My clutch is second hand and I do not know if it would fit or not. You would
have to go to Goughs and get them to compare part numbers between 5J and a 5U.
You will not be able to buy after market parts that I know of. There was a very
good wrecker in the USA that has most things you would need. His name is Jim
Zimmerman.

ideas where the best place to get these from. Would I go to Goughs or
aftermarket ones? The starter motor is still ok but isnt 100% so the clutch is
the only major i need to get her running again.
