I recall that the DVD extras actually mention the hat and how the producers made a conscious decision to build a bit of comic relief into Wolfe's ventures

In "The Witness", Wolfe was in court waring a "Three Cornered Hat". My brother, who is 72 and has read every one of Rex Stouts Nero Wolfe, saw this episode
