For those of you who get Sports Illustrated, this week's edition, they put
out there Pics of the Year. There is a great aerial shot of 8 or so kayaks
and canoes taken at the race in a windy, picturesque, part of the river. It
is a cool shot and for those who can pick themselves out in the pic, it
maybe worth keeping.

Paddling Quiz - win swag
Last night Joe Glickman ran a paddling general knowledge quiz for the
assembled internationals at the Club Mina - the Dubai Shamaal's Race HQ.
The questions are on Surfski.info - the first readers to send correct
answers to all the questions will be sent a set of Shamaal Kit courtesy of
the race organisers.
Southern Shamaal
This weekend's Southern Shamaal 4 day, 250km International Relay Race is set
to be a cracker. The forecast is for good downwind conditions on 3 of the 4
days with 25kts and 4m swells on day 3! There's something like 28 teams
signed up for the race including teams from Australia, South Africa, USA and
the UAE.
Check out the previews, interviews and some more radical photo sequences of
paddlers coming through the surf (a preview of day 3 of the southern
shamaal??).
Enjoy!

A host of the world's best surfski paddlers are campaigning in the Middle
East - about to take part in the US$60,000 Dubai Shamaal, with a host of top
sprint and marathon paddlers from Europe.
South Africans Hank McGregor, Dawid Mocke, Jasper Mocke, Clint Pretorius,
Matt Bouman, Herman Chalupsky, Sean Rice, Barry Lewin, Tom Schilperoort,
Darryl Bartho, Michele Eray are up against the likes of last year's winner
Australian Tim Jacobs and compatriots Murray Stewart, Dane Sloss, Jasmin
Kelly and Mark Anderson from Australia. Dicing with the lead women will be
Katie Pocock from NZ. Joe Glickman and Philippe Boccara represent the USA.
The Europeans are there in force with multiple world marathon champion Busto
Fernandes (Spain) leading the charge along with Ivan Lawler (UK), Tim
Brabants (UK), Eirik Veras Larsen (Norway) and a host of other Spanish,
Portuguese, Swedish, German and Italian athletes.
The new Nelo surfski will have its first outing in a big race as well.
Reports are that it's a speedy, low volume craft.
The weather looks as though it's going to play ball - the Dubai Shamaal for
which the race is named is scheduled to blow at about 16kt on Wednesday,
which should make for a good race (and will definitely be challenging for
some the European paddlers).
Live Commentary
You can follow the action from around 1pm Dubai time on www.surfski.info
(google "time now dubai" to see when that is!) 11h00 South African time.

I am just about to go out for a 2hr paddle in a few minutes. Years ago,
before I got into surfskis I was paddling sea kayaks and racing them like so
many of us in New England. I was always wondering what it what be like to
do some expedition kayaking like Chris Duff and Freya. While I made it
through the ranks of the ACA and BCU certification process, and put in many
miles in my sea kayaks, I realized I would never be brave enough to do any
real expedition type kayaking. Then my focus changed to racing surfskis but
I have always admired the skill and bravery that the expedition kayakers
have.
A few months ago at Double Beaver Race in Jamestown, Rhode Island, while no
one was paddling sea kayaks, we were all introduced to Marcus Demuth.
Marcus came in second behind Joe Glickman and just ahead of Mike Tracy. A
month later Marcus had had another good showing in the Lighthouse to
Lighthouse race placing 5th, again just ahead of Mike. To top off the
racing season Marcus paddled a kayak double in the Mayors Cup with veteran
Mike Blair of Team Achilles. While most of us know Marcus lives in New
York we knew very little about him.
Well, little did we know, the Marcus has been doing expedition kayaking
around the globe since 2005 including Iceland, Australia, Chile, and more.
Joe Glickman wrote a nice article profiling Marcus in Adventure Kayak
Magazine several months ago. All this information is on Marcus's web site,
Marcusdemuth.com.
Marcus Demuth and Biff Wruszek will attempt to become the first kayakers to
circumnavigate Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego, a trip of over 1,000 Miles.
Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego, appr. the size of Ireland, is shared equally
by Chile and Argentina, is the most Southern landmass in the World (besides
Antarctica), and located in one of the harshest maritime climates of the
World.
Marcus is uniquely talented in that he can race surfskis, paddle in some of
the most unforgiving seas in the world, and be able to give back to other
paddlers in the form of helping the Achilles team members enjoy the great
pleasures of being on the water.
There is a link to Marcus' and Biffs blog on the front page of our site were
you can follow them throughout their journey. You can also make a donation
to this expedition to help support Marcus and Biff. I will be donating
later today on behalf of the team Surfskiracing.com, who now can appreciate
Marcus' talents that take him well beyond Surfski racing.

Thanks, Andrew, Great Video! That happened to me off Napatree Point, RI, but
the result wasn't the same. I had a paddle leash on. The boat broached and
was sliding sideways on the foam pile. I stuck my paddle in the foam to high
brace, just like in the video, but didn't use the leg technique seen here, so
the wave washed the boat out from under me. Then I found out why you're not
supposed to use a leash in the surf. While I treaded water with a death grip
on my paddle, the ski continued on its own on the wave for 2 boat lengths -Â as
far as it could on the leash, then rode up broadside over the pile with the
leash stretched to it's limit, then slowly the bow came around. There seemed
to be an eternity while the ski paused on the fully stretched leash with the bow
pointed directly at my head, then it came at me. It missed my left ear by
about a foot as it shot past. This all probably took about 5 seconds, but it
seemed like a lifetime.

A couple of surfski related videos are online at NESurfski.net, showing
both ends of the experience spectrum. An aussie spec skiing makes an incredible
recovery in big surf, while a BBC reporter tries a ski for the first time.
Thanks for the support NESurfski has had over the 2009 season, the site's
popularity/hit- rate continues to grow and we're looking forward to 2010.

I agree w/ TIm that 4 years is pretty good! But, I also have a friend who just
returned both his and his wife's garmin's for refurbishing. For $79.95 they
made them both "new again". It's cheaper than a new one. :-) You might want
to check into that.

Four years is pretty good--you must have taken care to rinse and dry
with each use. I know little about the workings but maybe the speaker is
clogged with salt crystals and maybe further gentle rinsing might help?
Seek out other opinions too.

In 2008, two South Africans, Steve Woods and Bevan Manson, diced down the
Mississippi River in surfskis to break the record for the Phatwater Kayak
Challenge.
This year, Joe Glickman was invited down to sample the delights of Natchez,
Mississippi and to write about the race, but also about the remarkable
history of the city - and about "enough characters to last to New Years"
(including a 4'11'' bartender who catches cigarettes with a pair of
chopsticks, and a dog named Ketchup who drinks at the bar.)
We just posted the resulting piece - and if ever there was a story that made

The Uno Review is now posted on the site. Take a look. You can see how
close all the high performance skis are in regard to speed.
I think at this point, most of us who have owned, demo, raced different
boats now, would agree Fit becomes increasingly more important in ski
selection. If you are very comfortable in a ski, you feel more secure, and
will challenge yourself more than an ill fitting ski, and ultimately paddle
more.

Aloha,
Below you will find the 2010 West Coast FL Offshore Schedule. We are
excited this year to announce the addition of a "Doubles
Mini-Series" built into the season. As always, all races are open
to both doubles and singles (Surfskis, Outriggers, and Paddleboards) but
to encourage more doubles participation we have added a point series for
the doubles races. All races are Offshore and will be scheduled as
downwinds when the wind gods participate. All final race details will
be announced via our website http://clearwatercanoeclub.com
<http://clearwatercanoeclub.com/>
<http://clearwatercanoeclub.com%20by/> > by 4pm on the Friday before the
event. All races are $5 per person. Shuttles will be arranged for all
downwind races. Most races will be held out of the Sand Key Sailing
Center in Clearwater, FL unless we get a big East wind, then we will
travel over to Cypress Beach Park in Tampa, FL. Likewise, the East
Coast Champs 1-man race will be held in Miami, FL together as part of
the East Coast Champs Race Weekend and the Shark Bite Challenge will be
held at Honeymoon Island in Dunedin, FL as part of the Shark Bite Race
Weekend.
We will follow the same format as last year with the top time in each
category equaling 100%. You will receive a % score based on how your
time compares to the top time in your category. Your top 4 race %'s
out of the 6 total 1-man races will determine the winner in the 1-man
series. Your top 3 race %'s out of the 4 total doubles races will
determine the winner in doubles series.
Please let me know if you have any questions…

England to have the best of both worlds, ocean and some great flatwater

Five or six years ago there was a small manufacturer (in Florida, I think)
putting out a 24' tandem kayak designed for ocean racing. I remember
communicating with the owner some years ago and he said he had just delivered
one for the Blackburn Race (2002? 2003?).
I can't seem to find anything matching this description on the internet
anymore. I seem to recall the company had "Sport" in its name. Ring any
