The first National Christians Singles' Seminar took place in Kansas City, Missouri, on the Labor Day weekend in 1977. The thought of such an event originated with a widowed Christian woman named Maxine Edwards Woolridge. She was seeking a way to enhance the immediate region's ministry to the single Christians. She conferred with single members at the Swope Parkway Church of Christ. The idea of the seminar was presented to their minister, the late Brother Marion Holt. The expressed purpose of the Singles' Seminar was to "bring people together who had some very common interests and provide an opportunity to share and strengthen that ministry of fellowship." The seminar was carefully designed to address issues pertinent to persons who had not married and persons who through the medium of divorce or death of a spouse were single once again.
The first National Christian Singles' Seminar began with a continental breakfast on Friday morning. Other activities included: lectures, dinner, worship service, singing, fellowship and a shopping break before the formal banquet that evening. One acitivity of particular interest entailed the instructions to greet someone not previously known to the participants, exchange addresses with the individual and thus become pen pals.
