I’ve discovered my leak rate is 1
quart every 2 hours until I’m down to 9 quarts. Then the rate drops off
to 1 quart every 23 hours. (I leak (or burn) 2 quarts in 25 hours on my 225. I
thought that self-lubricating nose wheel was for tighter turns on narrow
runways when you installed individual brakes. Figured that was just another of
those advanced engineering features that they don’t build any more.

Drips on the nosewheel? I'm not the only one?
We have run Elite 20W-50 for about 8 years in our IO520, she's old has a lot of
little leaks that just never seem to go away - or they are so far buried that
we will wait until the next time we replace a jug to fix em.
However, based on the knowledge that you all shared we switched to straight 50W
and the burn rate is down from 1Qt over 6hrs to 1Qt over 8-9 hours. The
sample size is about 16 hours, so we'll see what happens. But I have
noticed about a 5 psi uptick since switching. I'll have to pay more
attention to settings to confirm it.
I was in the process of sending an oil
pressure question to the group when yours came over. I have an oil issue as
well but talking to my IA he tells me of issues he has ran across a couple
problems with AeroShell 15/50W. His experience was similar to your s and when
he switched back to straight 50W the problem in both cases went away in three
hours.
My issue is hope can be helped by the group
as well. My E-225 is 700+ hrs. after major. My oil pressure is 50 with normal
temps. After 20 min. flying my oil pressure is a weak 30 still with normal
temps. Altitude 1500, 80 degrees. Two nights ago my temps was up over
normal with 38 lbs. oil pressure but ambient was 90's. It may have been like
this since I have usually only look to see if all is in the green until another
question was posed about pressures and I started looking. At 800 rpm my oil
pressure has always been at 10 lbs but lived with it since it was within limits
but the 30 lbs rather makes me concerned. I have three thick washers in my new
plunger and spring. I use 50 straight weight Aero Shell. I always run the
engine max so its not babied 23-24/2400-2450 cruise. I talked to Deluca since
he had a reamer that reamed the plunger seat. He loaned it and it was
never returned, if anyone knows the where abouts I would like to use it and
return to Tom so others can benefit by his generosity.
Another issue is I will put in 10 qts. oil
and a short flight and I will be down to 8-8.5. I don't see oil being blown
overboard but I also have augmenter tubes that vent the separator into the
augmenters. Other leaks of the engine are small with the largest dripping on
the nose wheel which I see other Navions do.
Hoping its not bearings but being the money
pit I wouldn't doubt it but help me trouble shoot before I pull the engine.

Jim, That is a possibility I never considered but I believe it it may to be less friction on the nose well for shorter takeoffs. What oil press/temps do you...
I'm all over the high-side of the green, well out of the arc until the temp gets up to at least 150. I will see middle of the green at cruise and just a couple...
8 qts is plenty in a E-225. Anything more will just get blown out in the first few hours. The E-225 only needs 3 qts to keep up the oil pressure. You need the...

I thought it was an 80 weight but its a 40 weight. I'm running 50 weight Aeroshell 100 so the Aeroshell 80 would be worse in my case. Thanks Lonnie Prince ...
Oh yeah – I change the oil at 25 hour increments. I know some folks go 50 hours, especially on newer engines with filters. My 225 only has a screen so I feel...
I use Phillips 20W-50 X/C exclusively in my E-series engine and have for at least 1500 hours. There is no synthetic component in this oil which is why it is...
Lonnie, Aeroshell makes a 60 wt oil. Usually used in radials that leaks lots of oil. My E225 has 1200 SMOH and has about 35-40 PSI at cruise (oil temp about...
All, 25 hour oil changes are industry standard, just like 2500-3000 mile oil changes in cars & trucks is standard. The standards are that way for good reason....

I strongly suggest Poplar Grove . Goggle them and have look. They are of the few shops left that will even touch an E series. My brother quit E series 2 years...
