One of the things to look at first John is the nest area. Is the bird sitting nice and flat, tie it on, then hold it up to the light and see if you can see

From a voicing perspective a flute with a low L/D ratio will tend to have fewer high frequency harmonics, so will tend to have a bit more of a "mellow",
