..sweet, sweet revenge from
www.NashvilleStandup.com

The Great White Stanhope Returns!

The big news is that the legendary Doug Stanhope is back in Nashville,
doing shows at Zanies tonight thru Sunday. If you like standup comedy,
go see this show. No excuses! Doug is a comic genius and has been
favorably compared to Bill Hicks many times.

Last time Doug was in town I saw all of his performances each night he
was here. They were all different.. I heard something new every time.
It was all great stuff. Since then, Doug has had a few tv shows here
and there and recently took over hosting duties at the Man Show.. but
don't let that fool you. Doug is NOT a "turds and peckers"
boobie-obsessed idiot comic. He's not really political either.. but his
subject matter is daring. He doesn't do "shock" material for the sake
of shocking people.. but he does challenge the crowd to question what
they've been spoon-fed from the media, politicians and religions. Most
importantly, Doug is extremely funny.

If you've signed up for this list, you have at least *some* interest in
comedy.. that being the case, I can say with confidence that you would
be very, very foolish to miss Doug's act. I think it's $15 at the door,
which isn't bad at all. I paid $70 a seat for my wife and I to go see
Seinfeld.. but for a fraction of that you can go see the funniest
comedian out there working today. Go! Go to every performance you can
get into.. you won't be sorry.

(Check out Doug's new website: http://www.DougStanhope.com/ )

Last Thursday Laugh-In

Next week, NashvilleStandup returns to the Christopher Pizza Company
for this month's installment of the "Last Thursday Laugh-In" show. The
first show there was a great success, so we've scammed them into
letting us take over their stage the last Thursday of each month at 10
pm. What better way is there to spend your time than with pizza, beer
and standup comedy from Nashville's funniest comedians? This month's
featured comics are Dave Young and Robert Reeves. Admission is FREE.
Christopher Pizza is located at 1524-A Demonbreun Street. For more
info, call 615-300-1550.

N'Sup Invades Chattanooga
NashvilleStandup takes the show on the road with "THE ORIGINAL REGIONAL
SUPERVISORS OF COMEDY" (we're not exactly KINGS, just middle-management
types*) featuring Damian Anaya, Jesse Perry, Chad Riden, Matt Sterling,
Jason Williams and sketch comedy from www.MangyDog.com. Admission is
just $5 (or $2 with a student ID!). THIS FRIDAY, September 26, 2003 @

or someone you know will be in the Chattanooga area Friday night, be
sure to get out there! For more info, call 615-300-1550.

Mary Mack In The Scene
Mikelle Budge (that's Mary Mack to you) was written up in the Nashville
Scene's "A Face In The Crowd" feature last week. She gave props to her
peeps, mentioning NashvilleStandup TWICE, and plugged the Christopher
Pizza show she'll be appearing at TOMORROW. Check out the Scene's
archives to read it:

pizza, beer and hilarious standup comedy comes together like a tsunami
of funny! TOMMOROW's show features media-maven Mary Mack and the very
funny Craig Smith. Christopher Pizza is located at 1524-A Demonbreun

titled "Tim Northern's First CD") is now available! Featuring 12 tracks
of hilarious comedy, the cd is currently for sale at Tim's shows (he'll
be headlining at Zanies October 15 & 18) and will be on sale at
www.timnorthern.com very soon.

Murfreesboro Open Mic
A new place to rock the mic! Starting Thursday night, October 2nd,
around 8pm.. a new stand-up comedy open mic begins in the Inferno bar
in the old 527 Mainstreet Bar across from the square in Murfreesboro.
Keep an eye on the N'Sup forum for more info:
<http://www.NashvilleStandup.com/forum/>

Cantina BarCar Show
The Cantina BarCar show is the longest running regular stand-up comedy
open mic in Nashville.. but how long will it last? If you don't want to
see the show go away forever, show up and support live local comedy! It
certainly wouldn't hurt to buy a drink or two, either. Also, if you've
ever thought about getting up on stage for the first time, this is the
place to go. Let's take it to the stage, sucka!

Mangy Dog
Even if you can't catch the MangyDog magic at Chattanooga's Comedy
Catch Friday night, you can enjoy the hilarity from Mangy Dog
Productions wherever you are right now! In fact, studies show that
MangyDog.com is the leading provider of funny things to waste your time
on while screwing around on the 'net at work**. Check out all their new
funny crap:
<http://www.MangyDog.com/>

Zanies Turns 20!
Zanies celebrated twenty years of bringing their funny ha-ha's to
Nashville last week with SNL's Kevin Nealon. Congratulations to Zanies!

DISCLAIMERS:

* NashvilleStandup.com does not intend to typecast all Nashville-based
comics as "middle-management types." We're fully aware that some comics
are "entry-level" drones, that some are much like ladder-climbing "go
getters" coming up thru the ranks, and that still yet others are on
fire, burning white with glorious god-like intensity. Forgive us for
inferring otherwise.

** NashvilleStandup.com would like to point out that the line "studies
show that MangyDog.com is the leading provider of funny things to waste
your time on while screwing around on the 'net at work" is an outright
lie. We've conducted no studies, but that doesn't mean you can't spend
every waking moment online laughing at the things MangyDog.com has
waiting for you. Go.. now:

He recorded and released his first cd earlier this year.. and is already doing
his
second one. Tim said he listened to the first recording and couldn't stop
thinking
about all the other material he didn't do.. so here we go again! For $5, (or for
any
price now that I think of it) this is going to be a damn good show. It's too
good to
even describe with words.. so instead, I'm going to let the vibes flow thru and

A quick and dirty reminder:

The Cantina / Bar Car shows every Tuesday night at 8 pm have been
REALLY hot recently.. SO hot, in fact, that they've let us set up a
special show this week:

We'll forgo the "Nashville's Funniest Person" open mike stand-up
contest, and instead present 8 hand-picked comics to do 10-minutes
each. The crowd will pick the funniest person, who will win a $100 bar
tab.. which *could* mean drinks for everybody (or one REALLY drunk
comic - either way, it's sure to be fun).. so show up!

This Tuesday, Nov. 4, features comedians Steve Kane, Mary Mack, Craig
Smith, Matt Sterling, Dan Whitehurst, Wix Wichmann, Jason Williams and
Dave Young.

Showtime is 8:30 pm, admission is $3.

The Bar Car is located in Cummins Station, 209 10th Ave. South.

For info, visit www.NashvilleStandup.com or call 615-300-1550.

CANTINA ROCKS EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT:
The N'Sup Showcase at the Cantina Bar Car last week was incredible. The
house was packed with people buyin' booze and laughing loudly. All the
comics did a great job.. but Mary Mack was the crowd favorite, walking
away with a $100 bar tab, a Golden Fresca Award and a smile on her
face. The next showcase show will be December 2nd, so make your plans
now.

Don't forget about the regular Cantina Bar Car open mic contest - every
other Tuesday night at 8:30. Comics who are consistently funny there
get a chance to move up to the special Showcase shows. Every week we
get together and hilarity ensues.

WEDNESDAYS IN NOVEMBER: MATT & CLAY @ ZANIES:
If you've ever wondered what the future holds for comedy, you're not
alone (or perhaps you are.. really, it doesn't matter). If you'd like
to see the future of comedy* first hand, don't miss Matthew Sterling
and Clay Wombacher - appearing at Zanies Wednesday, November 12, 19,
and 26 at 8 p.m. Matt & Clay combine live sketch comedy, short films,
and all manner of silliness to create very funny and unique "comedy
that's good for the soul". Nobody should miss these shows - there
isn't a reason good enough to pass this up.

CRAIG SMITH - CANNED HAM - NEIL HAMBURGER @ THE END:
On November 16th at 9:30, Nashville's own Craig Smith will walk out
onto the stage at The End. After his funny oddball routine, a guy who
calls himself Canned Ham will perform. Then, the anti-comedy of Neil
Hamburger. Last week, when Hamburger was on Late Night with Conan
O'Brien, Conan mentioned this show.. so chances are, it'll be packed.
Get there early, and have $7 in your hands.

NASHVILLE COMICS ON STREAMING WEBCAST:
Local yokel Geoff Breedwell hosts a weekly webcast from 8 until 10 pm
every Sunday night over at <http://wnyd.coms.ph/> . Last week, Mark
Anundson made a funny guest appearance - singing some improvised songs
and doing the Nashville comedy scene proud. This Sunday, MangyDog.com's
Jesse Perry went head-to-head with KeithComedy.com's Keith Alberstadt
in a no-holds-barred comedy show-down. This was one of the funniest
things I've heard recently.** Jesse and Keith's mutual "hate" for each
other has quite often been the funniest thing about the weekly shows at
the Cantina Bar Car and it transplanted pretty well to the broadcast
arena without losing a drop of venom. Geoff plans on having other
Nashville comics as guests on his show in the future.. so keep an eye
on NashvilleStandup.com for the latest details.

NASHVILLE COMICS ON MANGYDOG.COM:
Three Nashville-based comedians have written columns for MangyDog.com
recently:
JESSE PERRY - In "Action Jackson", Jesse talks about his gig as a
feature act in Jackson, Tennessee on Halloween: "You just can't
compete with Satan and his unholy Skittles."
DANNY LIMOR - in "Barry Martin", Danny pays tribute to the late Barry
Martin: "When I met Barry, the first thing he did was make fun of the
way I dressed and the color of my hair. It was safe to say that I liked
Barry right away."
KEITH ALBERSTADT - in "Baseball, Beantown, and Jumping Monkeys (in
bed)", Keith reveals his shameful love of the Mets: "I will always
cheer for them, even if they make stupid trades or continue to pay a
catcher who couldn’t throw out Stephen Hawking."

DISCLAIMERS:

* Matthew Sterling and Clay Wombacher's very smart, extremely funny and
creative comedy shows are one *possible* "future of comedy". There are
*many* possibilities.. among them "All Fart Jokes, All The Time". Which
possible future will become reality? THAT is up to you. Come to Zanies
Nov. 12, 19 and 26. Bask in the glory of this high-quality comedy.
Laugh your ass off. Rest assured, that by supporting this great show,
you have assisted in making sure the future of comedy will be so lucky
as to be anything like what you will witness. It's going to be a damn
good show.

** By "This was one of the funniest things I've heard recently," I (of
course) mean: "Suck it, Mets!"

a friendly punch in the face from www.NashvilleStandup.com

Here's a few highlights from the upcoming schedule:

TOMORROW NIGHT: THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (since last month) -
Every man, woman and larvae in Nashville knows that the "Nashville's
Funniest Person" open-mic stand-up contest (8 p.m. every Tuesday night
at the Cantina Bar Car in Cummins Station) is funny every week.. but
not everybody knows that the first Tuesday of each month, the open-mic
is replaced by The NashvilleStandup.com Showcase Show featuring the
Best of the Best doing their best for all the rest. The next showcase
show (TOMORROW - Tuesday, Dec. 2) features comics Tony Sprott, Christy
Eidson, Damian Anaya, Joe Southards, Jason Williams, Robert Reeves, Lee
Woodward, and Mark Anundson. Admission is $3, and drinks are still
really cheap. Happy hour is from 5 to 8. If you only go to one comedy
show a month, this is the one to go to. The Cantina Bar Car, Cummins
Station, 209 10th Ave. South. Info: www.NashvilleStandup.com or
615-300-1550.

FRIDAY NIGHT: BONGO JAVA -
Two shows the evening of December 5th (8 p.m. and 10 p.m.) featuring
the stand-up comedy of Matt Sterling, Mary Mack, Jason Williams, Chad
Riden and more really funny comedians*. $5 cover (or $3 with college ID
or a really good excuse for being poor). Bongo Java, 2007 Belmont
Avenue. Info: www.NashvilleStandup.com or 615-300-1550.

IN A COUPLE WEEKS: THE NATIVE ENGINE COMEDY SHOW -
Monday, December 15th, at The End. The stand-up comedy of Damian Anaya,
Mary Mack, Jesse Perry, Robert Reeves, Carla Rhodes, Chad Riden, Craig
Smith, Tony Sprott, and Matt Sterling plus a house band. Doors open at
9, showtime is 9:30. Admission is $5. The End, 2219 Elliston Place.

DISCLAIMERS:

* These comedians could have been described as "alternative" if
"alternative" hadn't become "mainstream" at some point. Therefore, they
would almost be "alternative to alternative" comics if that didn't
sound so pretentious and jack-assy. Even though this show is at a
coffee house, rest assured nobody will be wearing any berets or reading
Haikus about Friedrich Nietzsche. See, this is just long winded and
nonsensical.. that's why it just says "really funny comedians." Trust
me, it'll be fun.

Huge thanks to everybody who supported Nashville comedy in 2003! It was
a great year with a lot of highlights.. and this new year already looks
like it's going to top the last. NashvilleStandup is already planning
shows in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Ashland City, Hermitage, Murfreesboro,
Franklin.. and even a *few* in Nashville. Without butts in the seats
these shows wouldn't happen and without the great word of mouth from
YOU, we never could have grown as much as we have. Thanks again.

NEW SHOWS:
If you've been checking the site, you saw a couple shows in new venues
in the last couple weeks: a New Years Eve "D's Nuts" show at Boots
Reverb in Printers Alley, the "Native Engine" show at The End on
Elliston Place and the "Smokin' Comics" show at Liquid Smoke in
Murfreesboro. All of these were fun shows on nice stages - we'll be
back there again, so be sure to come out.

a $100 bar tab. One of those people is going to win. When that person
wins, if you go up to them and congratulate them on having done a great
job and act like you supported them the whole time.. chances are
they'll buy you a drink. So come out tonight, and yell really loud for
all the comics, so you can honestly say to whoever wins, "I was hoping
you'd be the winner!"

LAST COMIC STANDING:
What a blast this week was! Comics came from all over the country to
audition for NBC's Last Comic Standing 2 cast. Many Nashville-based
comedians gave it a shot, but only Keith Alberstadt, Tim Northern and
Wix Wichmann got selected to perform in Tuesday evening's semi-finals
showcase. They represented Nashville comedians well.. and all put on
great performances. Two other comics from out of town were selected to
move up to the next level.. but we're proud of all the Nashville comics
who tried out.

Some photos from the day are online at:
<http://www.chadriden.com/gallery/nsup_20040127>

WSMV interviewed several local comics for their newscasts, and a few
local papers covered the event as well:
Element_ID=46083136>
<http://www.theleafchronicle.com/news/stories/20040130/go/318168.html>

After the merriment at Zanies, the Bar Car was rocking! Thirty three
comics did the legendary open mic.. the show was about 3.5 hours long,
and it was great. Thanks to everybody who came out to party!

TONIGHT ONLY!
Some sort of wackiness is going down over on Vanderbilt campus. Chad
Riden, Jesse Perry, Mary Mack and Matt Sterling will all be performing
and it's open and free to the public, and I believe it starts at 8 p.m.
in the Student Rec Center on Natchez Trace. I hear there are two major
ways to get there:
1. Wedgewood Ave/21st Ave (Hillsboro Pike) continue along Wedgewood
toward West End and turn RT on Natchez Trace, pass by athletic fields
and turn LT into Medical Center Parking. This is a large surface lot
and there should be no problem parking there at night. Walk across the
street (toward the track) and up a slight hill to the Student Rec
Center.
2. West End Avenue to Blakemore (?), turn at the Am South Bank, this is
a RT turn. First light is Natchez Trace, turn left, continue to Medical
Center Parking lot on left, walk across the street (toward the track)
and into Student Rec Center.

BAR CAR SHOWCASE:
This month's NashvilleStandup Showcase at the Bar Car looks like it's
going to be the best show since, well, last week. The first Tuesday of
every month, N'Sup presents a showcase of Nashville's very best local
comedians instead of the open-mic. The next showcase show will be
February 3rd and features comics Keith Alberstadt, Dawna Kinne, Robert
Reeves, Carla Rhodes, Craig Smith, Jason Williams, Ryan Williams and
Lee Woodward. Admission is $3. The Bar Car is in Cummins Station, 209
10th Ave. South. Info: www.NashvilleStandup.com or 615-300-1550.

T.B.G. - LAUGH OUT LOUD:
7:30 pm, February 6th & 7th at Truth Beauty & Goodness Coffee house in
Ashland City. Hilarious comedy from some of NashvillStandup's finest!
No cover, but we'll guilt-trip you into donating $5. TBG serves
specialty coffees, teas, smoothies, bottled water, ciders, soups and
sandwiches. It is an alcohol free & smoke free environment. 116 North
Main Street, Ashland City Tennessee across from the courthouse. Info:

RENEGADE COMEDY TOUR:
Feb. 8 - 8pm @ Exit/In. Local sensations Mary Mack and Jesse Perry open

a rock and roll edge"). Contact Ticketmaster for tickets. Exit/In is at

Well, crap.. that email got cut off here's more:

-- FRED ARMISEN @ THE END:
Saturday, February 28th. The End, 2219 Elliston Place. I *believe* the
doors open at 8 with a band opening up for Fred.. I'm told he might be
going up as late as 10, BUT you should get there early, 'cause this
will sell out fast. Nashville comic Matt Sterling has a review:

-------------
For those unaware of Fred's prodigious talents, he's a supporting cast
member on "SNL," which, like many people affiliated with that program,
means that he's remarkably talented and unique, although encumbered by
the fact that America will never discover his genius because he's on
"SNL."

Fred's a quirky comic performer who is frequently likened to Andy
Kaufman. Admittedly, his character work is often bizarre and absurd
like Kaufman's, but more than anything, he seems to possess Kaufman's
ability to inhabit his characters so fully during his performances that
it can be difficult for some audience members to know whether or not
they're even watching a "character" piece. Of course, these people are
stupid, hopelessly lost individuals, but that's not the point... The
point is that unlike most sketch performers, Fred never winks at the
audience or tips his hand so to speak. Once he adopts a facade, it
sticks for the duration of the piece. I think it's worth noting that
before Fred pursued comedy full time, he was a member of the Blue Man
Group.

- Matt Sterling
-------------

So, yeah, go. See you there!

SUPPORT LIVE NASHVILLE COMEDY:

Sure it's nice outside, but that doesn't mean you can't come enjoy
live comedy at night!
Comedy Central be damned, there's a very strong comedy scene right
here in Nashville.
Support these comedians before it's too late! Many are soon
"graduating" from the
NashvilleStandup community and moving on to bigger cities and/or
hitting the road this
month! For example:

Keith Alberstadt - Keith has been a Nashville-based comic for 8 or 9
years or so. He has
been funny for at least the last three years.* About a year ago, he
went full-time on the
road and is only able to stop in Nashville a few times a year. This
week, he's at the 5th
Annual Boston Comedy & Movie Festival and I hear he's doing really
well. Good luck to
Keith! Check out http://www.KeithComedy.com to see where he'll be
next.

Rob Haynes - This college student is a newcomer to the Nashville
comedy scene, but has
improved rapidly over a very short time and has proven to be one of
the funniest regulars
in town (if you don't count everybody else*). With the school year
ending, Rob will return
to East Tennessee. He'll be doing shows regularly in Johnston City
and Knoxville.. but
won't be in Nashville very often after next week. He'll be back in
the fall.. but if you haven't
seen this guy over the last few months you've missed out on some
really funny original
material from a fun and funny guy.

Mary Mack - The most creative female comic I've ever seen. Very
subtle, very character-
driven, very funny. Everybody who knows this girl loves her, despite
the fact that she's a
hate-mongering racist.* Every Nashville comic has a crush on her, and
audience members
seem to want to hug her after her shows. She recently traveled to
compete in California's
Funniest Female Contest (photos are here: <http://
www.funniestfemale.com/2004/
photos325.htm> ), and unfortunately for Nashville, will be
permanently moving away. She
has already vacated her apartment and is hitting the road for a
summer tour. If you missed
her, don't worry - she'll be on tv before you know it. She's going to
be huge.. and if you've
been a regular at N'Sup shows over the last year, you know why.
Mary's site is http://
www.MaryMackComedy.com

Tim Northern - Tim is largely considered "The Godfather of Nashville
Comedy" - he's been
instrumental in keeping the scene alive and fun for over 10 years..
and has been working
the road regularly for quite a while.. but ever since appearing on
Star Search last year, his
schedule has blown up (and so has his scorching case of herpes*)! Tim
has been doing
shows all over the country, but still calls Nashville home. Whenever
he's in town, he's out
at these local shows, supporting the cause on stage and off. The next
time he'll be
performing in town is May 3rd at the Native Engine: East Side show at
Radio Cafe (see the
details below).

Carla Rhodes - International superstar Carla Rhodes is graduating
college this month, and
is moving to New York City! She has been up there almost every
weekend over the last few
months performing, being interviewed and having fun (streaming video
of Carla having
this "fun" is available for $25 a month on some "entertainment"
websites*). Carla started
performing comedy in clubs when she was just 13 years old.. and we've
been lucky to have
her in our little underground cult these last few years. It's a sad
thing to see her go, but at
the same time it's exciting 'cause we all know she's going to
continue to be successful in
NYC. Be sure to get all the latest Carla news from:
http://carlarhodes.com

There are many more funny and unique people doing hilarious, original
comedy right here
in Nashville. Most of these shows have a minimal cover charge, if
any, and offer drink
specials. See these people now, while it's still cheap to see them
live!

UPCOMING SHOWS:

May 22nd, a heap of Nashville comics will perform around 10:30 at the

NashvilleStandup.com is a not-for-profit organization with a mission

help make it a success. The website is the only resource for complete
local stand-up
comedy show listings and news and serves as a centralized hub of
information for
comedians and comedy fans. NashvilleStandup sponsors and produces
live comedy shows
featuring an impressively diverse mix of comedians and comedy styles
both in the
Nashville area and on the road. Regularly receiving compliments from
traveling comedians
who pass through town, NashvilleStandup.com hopes to one day change
Nashville's

- we're still
undecided on that part).

Want to help the cause? We need:

N'Sup fliers to people leaving

N'SUP FLIER CAMPAIGN '04:

There are several times in the near future, when N'Sup is organizing
a concerted effort to
flier the area:
Apr. 30 - 8pm: Bill Cosby (Allen Arena / Lipscomb University)

NASHVILLESTANDUP.COM ANNOUNCES MOCK THE VOTE CAMPAIGN

NASHVILLE, TN, May 17, 2004 -- The Nashville comedy scene has reached
revolutionary proportions. Every week, there are numerous comedy shows
staged around town, organized by the city’s growing troop of stand-up
performers and behind-the-scene supporters. While some of these shows,
such as the Bar Car Open Mic, have been running for years, new gigs are
sprouting up at a frenzied pace, spurred on by crowds that beg for a
unique outlet and a voice more representative of current trends. These
events are poised to move beyond the realm of sheer entertainment and
into something much more momentous. Despite their humorous tone,
Nashville comedians are serious about effecting a change of face that
extends past mere pomp and circumstance. It has become ever clearer
that audiences demand accountability from their entertainers. The local
comic community’s enthusiasm and dedication to brightening the mood of
its eager public has met with an overwhelmingly positive reception, and
the time has come to use this power to an even greater end.

On this inspiration, members of this burgeoning scene have banded
together and developed a plan destined to provoke a response that
parlays laughter into action. NashvilleStandup.com, the most
comprehensive resource and undisputed home base for comedy in the
region, has announced its sponsorship of a groundbreaking new
initiative: introducing Mock the Vote. In a boldly proactive move to
further involve friends and fans of Nashville comedy,
NashvilleStandup.com will be hosting onsite voter registration at
select events throughout the summer and fall.

Both major presidential candidates in the 2004 election have
demonstrated their ambivalence about our state’s role in the eventual
outcome through a distinct lack of attention. It is the goal and
commitment of NashvilleStandup.com and its affiliates to express our
sincere concern for the state of affairs while convincing all
interested parties of their ability to have true influence and impact.
We are confident in the personal and overall importance of making a
decision and acting upon it. NashvilleStandup.com encourages you to
come out and participate in this exciting and unprecedented movement.

The Mock the Vote campaign will officially launch at the May 24th
installment of the Native Engine Comedy Show. This monthly event at The
End on Elliston Place has joined other established and emerging shows
on the vanguard of Nashville’s progressive comedy scene. Stay tuned for
news on Mock the Vote’s future appearances and other Nashville comedy
endeavors, or visit www.NashvilleStandup.com for more information.

"More fun than kicking Screech* in the nuts."

When you think "Nashville in the summer time" you think "stand-up
comedy", right? I know I do. Nothing beats the heat quite like sitting
in a nice, air-conditioned bar laughing like an idiot. Nothing beats a
cold, crisp, delicious beer.. even if it's being thrown in your face
because somebody "don't take too kindly" to them smart remarks.** Ahh,
summer.

There's a lot going on in the world of NashvilleStandUp. Before I clue
you in on all the happenings, let me remind you about the big show
TONIGHT:

   -- BAR CAR - N'SUP SHOWCASE:
The first Tuesday of every month, NashvilleStandup.com presents a
showcase of Nashville's very best local comedians instead of the
regular Tuesday night Bar Car open-mic. This show features the weekly
winners, local favorites and the occasional surprise guest competing
for a $100 prize.
Tonight's show is hosted by Jesse Perry and features Damian Anaya, Jeff
Havens, David Ridings and Ryan Williams. As a special bonus,
NashvilleStandUp alumni LANDON LYON will perform as well. This is a
MOCK THE VOTE event, where Nashville comics will encourage the audience
to vote, and be registering voters at the show. Admission is $3. The
Bar Car, Cummins Station, 209 10th Ave. South. Show info: 615-300-1550,
Bar Car: 615-259-4875.

I'll see you there. Let me know you read this message and I'll buy you
a drink. On with the news..

One of the touring comics from Nashville was on national tv last
month.. KEITH ALBERSTADT is a funny, funny man.. and he was one of the
comedians making fun of various country music videos in CMT's "20
Funniest Videos". The footage they used of Keith was hilarious stuff..
if they rerun that show, be sure to look for him. Also, check out
http://www.keithcomedy.com/ for all of the latest Keith News.

Freelance writer Martin Brady (The Scene, etc) has reviewed "Hey,
That's Funny! Comedy's Greatest Hits" for NashvilleStandUp.com. Martin
calls it "a superb sampler that will be enjoyed over and over by comedy
fans" - so you might want to check it out. Read the whole review here:
<http://www.nashvillestandup.com/index.php?feature=HeyThatsFunny>

N'Sup will begin advertising on Comedy Central on Comcast very soon.
Several VERY funny commercials have been produced and more are on the
way.. so watch for them. Want to help out? There's a couple things you
could do: TONIGHT, we're filming another ad after the Bar Car Showcase.
Come out to show (starts at 8pm!) and stick around and maybe we'll put
you on tv. Can't make it out? Donate a couple bucks toward the cause! A
little would go a long way. Click the "PayPal: donate" button on
www.NashvilleStandup.com and send what you can. We're doing God's work,
people.. help us out.

"Mock the Vote" is N'Sup's voter-registration effort throughout the
2004 Presidential Campaign. We're debating politics on the forum (
http://www.NashvilleStandUp.com/forum/ ) and registering voters at
selected shows leading up to the election in November. The upcoming
Mock.. shows are:
Aug. 3 - 8pm: N'Sup Showcase (Bar Car)
Aug. 23 - 9pm: Native Engine Comedy Show (The End)

DISCLAIMERS:
* While it is widely accepted that Dustin Diamond (who played "Screech"
on "Saved By The Bell") should be brutally beaten every day of his
life, N'Sup does not officially endorse violence, even in this very
worthy case. If you take it upon yourself to bring physical harm to Mr.
Diamond, N'Sup can not officially condone this behavior.. although it
is not our policy to specifically discourage it either.

Why the hatred for Screech? Besides, the obvious, you mean? Read the
forum to find out:

Tonight only:

NashvilleStandUp.com PRESENTS... JASON WILLIAMS & CHAD RIDEN @ HAIR OF
THE DOG:
8:30pm, November 20th at Hair Of The Dog. Who's the worst father in
Nashville's comedy scene? Find out. Hosted by The Native Engine Comedy
Show's Craig Smith, this show features two full-length sets from a
couple of the funniest comics to call Nashville home PLUS we'll close
out the night with the great music of The Swindlers. This show will be
recorded for release on cd! 1831 12th Ave. South, Nashville. Info:

This show has gotten some good press. The Scene gave it it's comedy
"Critic's Pick" for the week:

"CHAD RIDEN
One of Nashville's staunchest promoters of comedy, Riden is also a
pretty funny guy in his own right. His aggressive, angry-young-man
stance of a few years ago has been leavened somewhat, since Riden more
recently entered the world of marriage and fatherhood. His observations
on the domestic sphere teeter amiably on the edge, but when he wants
to, Riden can still zing pop culture, the media and American life in
general with incisive wit. His Nov. 20 appearance at Hair of the Dog
will be recorded as potential material for a new CD. Riden takes the
stage at 8:30 p.m. For information, call 386-3311 or visit
www.NashvilleStandUp.com. —Martin Brady"

Our_Critics_Picks>

Flattering words from Mr. Brady and I appreciate it.. but he did over
look three other aspects of this show. I can stand and talk for 45
minutes and that can be fun.. but throw in the mix Craig Smith, Jason
Williams and the Swindlers and you've got yourself a helluva show.
Craig is one of the most prolific and consistently funny writers in
town and the shows he puts on are always the highlight of the month.
Jason's material is witty and clever and out of the ordinary. His charm
and unique personality compliment his style and make him a very
entertaining guy. Craig, Jason and I are all fathers of young children
and we all tackle the subject in our own way, but it's only a part of
each of our diverse acts. Tonight, it's up to you to decide.. who is
the worst father in Nashville comedy? Find out at 8:30 at Hair of the
Dog.

Wild, wacky stuff from
www.NashvilleStandUp.com

NashvilleStandUp Remembers Johnny Carson:
The King of Late Night, Johnny Carson, quietly passed away this morning
at his home in Malibu. As host of the Tonight show for three decades,
Carson's influence on popular comedy and American culture in general is
unmatched by anyone I can think of. He was truly The Great One, and he
will be missed.

Tune in to WKRN-TV (ABC, channel 2) at 10pm tonight. They interviewed
me about Johnny - what he meant to entertainment, comedy, late night
television and myself. I'm not sure how they'll edit it.. they'll
probably just play the clip where I weep uncontrollably in between
plugging my websites.

Join the Nashville comics and comedy fans morning the loss of Johnny
over on the MangyDog.com Forum:
<http://www.mangydog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1508>

Comedy writer / late night television historian Mark Evanier has posted
a ton of Carson stuff on his website. He says: "They once asked him
what he'd like his epitath to be. He said, "I'll be right back."
Mark's site is: <http://www.newsfromme.com>

N'Sup On 102.9 The Buzz:
This last week, several Nashville comics started making random fake
phone calls on the air with Doogie at 102.9 The Buzz. It's funny stuff.
If you're not out at a live show, turn on the radio from 7-9pm and
listen for our cut-ins at random times.

Changes At The Bar Car:
The longest running open mic stand-up comedy show in Tennessee has
gotten even better!
Happy Hour now runs from 4-8pm with hot chicks behind the bar and hot
wings from the Wing Stop. (This will happen EVERY NIGHT actually, the
Bar Car will be open 7 days a week again.) Bar Car will be getting a
better sound system, a new paint job, and new artwork on the walls
every other Friday. Also, there is now a $2 cover for the open mic, but
no drink minimum.
Hope to see you out at the show every Tuesday night at 8pm. The Bar
Car is located in Cummins Station, 209 10th Ave. South. For more
information, visit www.NashvilleStandUp.com or call 615-300-1550.

There's a couple other really good shows on the schedule you should
make plans now for:
- Nashville's own Keith Alberstadt will be back in town this week after
a tour that took him all over the country and even to the Bob and Tom
show again. See Keith with Last Comic Standing's Kathleen Madigan and
N'Sup favorite BW Davis all week at Zanies. I believe Keith will
headline on Sunday night.. if you ask me, that's the night to go.
- N'Sup Presents.. Ryan Williams & Craig Smith at Hair Of The Dog
Saturday night. Hosted by me (Chad Riden), this show will feature two
of the funniest comics in Nashville doing long sets to be recorded for
release on cd!
- The Native Engine Comedy Show returns on Monday the 31st with Craig
Smith, Landon Lyon, Jesse Perry, Matt Sterling, Jason Williams, Ryan
Williams and Dave Young. Be at The End by 9pm if you want a seat -
that's a killer lineup. This show features a headlining set from Landon
Lyon who won the distinction of "Comic Of The Year" in December at the
Bar Car's Showcase Showdown of Showcase Winners from 2004. If you miss
this show, you'll miss one of the best shows of 2005.

2005.02.22 Nashville Comedy News
a refreshing swim in Lake NashvilleStandUp.com

IN THIS EDITION:
Tim Northern on Bob & Tom; Carla Rhodes on tv; Comedy classes at
Zanies; The N'Sup Spotlight; Special "Clean" Show at Bar Car; Mitch
Hedberg, Lewis Black, Corey Holcomb & Tim Wilson come to Nashville; the
N'Sup Store Winter Blow Out Sale; plus, tree-pruning tips from the
experts.

Bob and Tom alert!
The "Godfather of Nashville Comedy", Tim Northern, will be on the Bob
and Tom Show Wednesday, February 23rd! In Nashville, wake up at the
crack of dawn and tune into 102.9 The Buzz to hear what Mr. Northern
has to say.

Carla Rhodes: big pimpin' up in NYC
N'Sup alumni Carla Rhodes made an appearance on the FUSE network
<www.fuse.tv> February 12th & 13th talking about cover and anthem
songs. She spouted endless pop culture knowledge and made with the
funny right there on the tv! Congrats to her.

Rik Roberts' comedy classes at Zanies
Anybody who has seen Rik headline across the country knows he's a funny
guy.. and he's teaching a few levels of comedy classes at Zanies. If
you're thinking about doing stand-up or just want to be funnier in
general, you might want to check this out. More info is at:
<http://www.nashville.zanies.com/news.php?NewsSection=Comedy+Classes>
SPECIAL N'SUP DISCOUNT: If you contact Rik at: rikcomic@... or
615-293-3629 and tell him that NashvilleStandUp.com sent you, he'll
give you a discount of 25% off the enrollment fee AND Rik will donate
$25 to N'Sup.. so let's make it happen, people!

There's tons of great shows coming up.. but I'd like to shine the N'Sup
Spotlight on this one -

TOMMY JOYCE & DAVE YOUNG (JESSE ZANE'S NASHVILLE NIGHTS):
Wednesday, February 23rd at 9pm. NO cover. Two of Tennessee's top
comics will take the stage for a great night of laughter. The
philosophical Tommy Joyce is a cerebral and hilarious story teller with
a slant toward the absurd. Dave Young's energetic, party animal persona
automatically ensures audiences of having fun.. but his comedy'll put
'em in the floor laughing. This show will be recorded for release on
cd. It's free.. it's gonna be fun.. don't miss it! Jesse Zane's
Nashville Nights is at 308 Church St. in Nashville. info: 615-242-9773
or visit www.NashvilleStandUp.com

There's your "Don't Miss It Or You'll Be Sorry" event of the moment..
so mark your calendars. Look, I'll just plan your whole Wednesday for
you: wake up at dawn and listen to Tim Northern on Bob and Tom... then
call in sick to work so you can rest up. At 8pm, go on down to
Printer's Alley to get a good seat and a few pre-show cocktails at
Jesse Zane's.. and laugh until your face hurts.

Speaking of don't miss it events.. you should be out at the Bar Car
every Tuesday - you never know who will stop in. Last week Henry
Phillips and Auggie Smith showed up and tried out some new material
before they began their week at Zanies.

Also, here's something cool coming up over at the Bar Car -
N'SUP OPEN MIC STAND-UP COMEDY CONTEST (BAR CAR)
SPECIAL "CLEAN" SHOW
Sometimes comedy open-mic's can get pretty raunchy.. but on Tuesday,
March 1st, the Bar Car show will be an all-clean show with material and
language airable on prime-time tv. Any comic who slips up will be
punished in a lightheartedly wacky fashion on stage and then beaten
bloody behind the building.

The "Nashville's Funniest Person" stand-up comedy contest, 8pm every
Tuesday night. The longest-running stand-up comedy show in Tennessee
features local regulars, nationally touring acts trying out new
material, and the occasional lunatic wacko.
$2 admission. Happy hour specials run from 4-8pm.

The Bar Car, Cummins Station, 209 10th Ave. South (10th & Demonbreun).

Show info: www.NashvilleStandUp.com or 615-300-1550, Bar Car:
615-259-4875.

The rest of the schedule for February and March is up on N'Sup.. and
it's pretty good. Here's just a few names you'll see this next month:
Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black, Corey Holcomb & Tim Wilson.

N'SUP STORE WINTER BLOW OUT SALE:
There are new items for sale in the N'Sup store.. and until March 1st,
we're running a Winter Blow Out Sale: $3 off Sweatshirts, Hooded
Sweatshirts and Jr. Hoodies (whatever the hell that is!). When you
place your order, use Coupon code: WINTERSALE.
