Us three and one more whose name I don't recognize, so far. I'll be
back in Nashville more often this year than last, would love to get
together with local origami enthusiasts to do... whatever

Just got around to getting my account going again. I haven't posted anything on
Yahoo in a minute.

I've done several origami projects this year with my students, but I have no
idea what the names of them are. The two best were a modular star design made up
of triangles and a flower shape that slid apart to form a ring. The entire
school was awash in paper folding for a few weeks. I've been trying to figure
out how to make something out of the classic gum wrapper chain shape. I've seen
bags and wallets made from this but it might be a little too difficult for 12-14
year olds.

Ideas?

Thanks

Michael

Sorry I haven't had much time to work on starting up this group yet.  I'll try to get around to that in the next day or two.

I did some research into the gum wrapper chain purses recently...
Every one I found was just the standard chain stitched together at the
edges with thread or fishing line. I have been trying to come up with
a 2d tiling variant with a similar link and lock to the classic chain,
with little success. I have exhausted the possibilities with 1x3
units and am now looking into patterns using 1x4 units.

So, I guess I should get this whole thing started.  I started this group because I would like to foster a paper folding group in Nashville that has regular meetings.  This is purely selfish in initial motivation, since I want to fold paper with other people. Right now this list is small, and consists mostly of people who I know.  If you want, feel free to sent an intro email and let us know who you are and what your origami experience and interest(s) are.

Beyond that, I figure we have several things to work out.  My plan is to advertise this group in a couple of locations that may be sympathetic (which I have already done to some degree), then to plan and hold some meetings which will be publicized a bit more.

To do that, we need to figure out several things.  Well, need may be a strong word.

1.  What do we want to call the group?  (Does it need to be clever or pun-y?)
2.  How often do we want to meet? (I'm thinking monthly or bi-monthly.)
3.  How long should meetings be?
4.  Where do we want to meet? (I have several ideas, but I'd welcome suggestions.)
5.  What do we want to do at meetings?  Just fold whatever?  Learn/teach a specific model or technique?  Something else?  (I actually want to do all of that...)
6.  What am I forgetting?

Anyway, your ideas and feedback are not only welcome but necessary.  Let's figure out where we want to go and then do it.

thanks,
malachi

Pretty much any time on Sunday is good. Do you want to plan it around lunch or
dinner? Strictly the afternoon?

Has a location been chosen? If so, the address is sufficient but directions are
acceptable too.

Well, our first meeting was a success with three attendees. Although we didn't manage to settle on any bylaws or elect officers, we did tentatively agree to try to meet again some time in mid to late June, probably on a Sunday again since that seemed to work well.

Are there any thoughts, suggestions, or objections?

What would you guys like to see in terms of meeting structure?  More free-folding?  Learning/teaching a specific model or technique?  Something else?

Remember, this group is whatever we want to make of it.  ("Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl...")

thanks,

Perhaps next time, the founding of the anarcho-syndicalist commune will not be
so contentious. I think we could really make some progress if _certain_ members
were not so committed to hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which
perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society.

That being said, perhaps we should band together to assists Bats in constructing
a multi-unit structure. However, it might be good to begin with something
requiring substantially less than 2000 units.

Barring that, either free fold or some wet folding. If wet folding, what sponge
works best? What fold is sponge worthy?

We could meet again on the 28th, same bat time, same bat cave.

Suggestion: coffee and something baked by Bats.

June 28th?  I don't know of any conflicts right off.

As far as wet folding, things that have some curvature are good.  Simple models are actually better.  I can dig up some good models.

As far as sponges... I just have some really cheap ones. *shurg*

I went to Uncle Dave Macon Days today and I saw that the Japan-America Society of Tennessee (http://www.jastn.com/index.php) had a table of origami models for sale.  Mostly modular ornaments and some crane earrings, bookmarks, roses, and a few other odds and ends.  I talked to them and explained that we're starting a club in Nashville.  I gave them my email address, so maybe they will get in touch.
