I went to this and it was fun.  They were mostly folding cranes and Yoshizawa butterflies.  I was apparently the only person they didn't already know, and I had apparently met the guy who was teaching in passing at the Handmade and Bound festival last fall.  I also taught a couple of people how to fold sonobe units and they seemed to enjoy it.

Their new studio space is spacious and I might talk with them about experimenting with paper making at some point in the future.

Open Studios at Platetone: Printmaking, Paper and Book Arts
January 24th, 2013, 6:00-9:00pm

Join members of Nashville’s community printmaking, paper and book arts studio, Platetone, for monthly open studio sessions. While members demonstrate various printmaking techniques, visitors are encouraged to get creative with ink and paper.

Our featured artist for January, Stephen Zerne, will be demonstrating the art of origami. Come help Platetone fold cranes to celebrate and decorate our new space on 4th Ave, and learn the craft of paperfolding while using prints and papers created by Platetone artists.

Tour our new space and enjoy light refreshments while meeting our growing group of artists. Visitors can select cranes to bring home for a small donation.

Platetone: Printmaking, Paper and Book Arts is located at:
535 4th Avenue South
Nashville, TN 37210

A fine arts community studio offering workspace, workshops and exhibition opportunities

Platetone Printshop was founded in 2004 as community printmaking studio offering membership to fine art printmakers. Expanding upon its vision, Platetone Printmaking, Paper and Book Arts was formed in 2012 to include other paper media and book artists.

The mission of Platetone is to inspire and interact with our community by providing accessibility to studio space and equipment, sponsoring events that showcase book, paper arts, and printmaking, while providing educational opportunities for all ages. We believe art should be accessible to everyone and that small groups of like-minds can inspire and enrich the community. Platetone exists to support local artists, inspire and create new artists, and serve as a local institution for all things book, paper, and print.

Platetone Printmaking, Paper and Book Arts is located in downtown Nashville at 535 4th Avenue South (formerly the Lost Boys Center).

This is a great price, and these were all pretty good years...  If I didn't already have them, I would be getting them.  I thought I would pass along the info in case anyone might be interested.

We have completed our annual inventory for the year and quite honestly, we are stuffed to the gills! So, to make room for 9 new papers and 2 new books that were recently ordered, we need to clear some room.

For right now, we have put a bunch of annuals on sale for $10 each - that's 60% off original price! So if you missed or lost any of these year's, now is the time to grab them. also, the table of contents for the annuals are on each product's page.

The new papers we have ordered are papers from Austria this time as we are trying hard to find different and unusual papers to compliment that standard papers you can find most places.

So take a look at http://origamiusa.org/catalog/sale to see what is on sale.

Mike

Yesterday's meeting went really well and there was some discussion about the Cherry Blossom Festival coming up on March 23.  It looks like we will have a logo!  There are still some details to be worked out, but things are coming together.

If you are interested in helping teach at the Cherry Blossom Festival and I haven't talked to you about it already, please let me know.

Lastly, do any of you use Twitter?  I was thinking about setting up a twitter account for the club, but I am not very good at posting things in the moment, so it would probably only be worth doing if one or two of you were interested in also contributing.

thanks,
malachi

Apparently, starting today Woot! is offering every shirt they have ever offered in the past (at a higher than "normal" price [$18]).

Three origami related ones that come up in a search (I have the first two.):

Please describe the Endada Festival.

Will it be a similar set up as the Cherry Blossom festival?

Somewhat.  The layout is a bit different with some rows of tables with arts and crafts and then a couple of small stages for musical performances throughout the day.  Last year we had a table or two under a tent.

Things went well, despite the cool weather, and we didn't have any rain.  The sidewalls were very, very helpful with keeping the wind away, so there were only one or two times that paper started to blow away.

We got around $45 in donations, which almost covers the fee for the spot, and we stayed busy the entire time.  We were very close to the stage again, though, so it got loud sometimes (in particular with the drums, but it was nice to see them back).  There were some stretches where I just didn't even try to give verbal instructions.

The flyers and banners seemed to be well received, thanks Melissa!

We got about three seconds of video in the WKRN story Saturday night, too.  One of me and two of Melissa towards the middle and end.

Now onward to Endada (and the White Oak Festival, but I think I'll be doing that solo unless someone else wants to come to East Tennessee...)

Hi All,

I discovered I own several duplicates of books by Tomoko Fuse (and Jun Mitani and Toshikazu Kawasaki).

I've placed them for sale on eBay and Amazon.

My eBay seller id is robert_not_bob.

I hope this link works for you:

My Amazon seller id is need_space_in_basement.

I hope this link works for you:

All are in virtually-new condition (there was never a need to open a duplicate).

Thank you!

We should discuss some fall event planning at our meeting this Sunday.  I just got an email about the opening of vendor registration for Handmade and Bound (Oct. 4 & 5).  That event was a lot of fun last year.  Not as much traffic as some of the other events we attend, but much more focused interest from artists.

However, Oct. 5th is also the Celebrate Nashville event (which we did not attend last year, but we were under the Japanese Consulate tent in 2011) that I had also been thinking about...
