This weekend there is a convention which will stream some of the
classes (and recording them for later viewing online as well).

I think the boxes workshop will be particularly interesting.

Hello Folding friends,

We are very very excited to announce that the online streaming sessions
schedule from Origami Heaven are posted on the website.
Ideally we would prefer to have you with us in person, but these streaming
sessions will add a totally new dimension to this event.
The link for the streaming sessions is on our website or you could go to
https://meeting.sinc.stonybrook.edu/origamiheaven

Invite some friends and have a party and join origami heaven together.
Imagine a whole network of mini classrooms connected. It is going to be so
exciting!

It is still not too late to register for Origami Heaven. We are also very
excited to have a nice warm up before the folding mania this weekend as the
Origami lecture series also starts today with talks from Erik and Martin
Demaine at the Simons center at Stony brook University. If you are in the
Long Island area, please consider coming and joining the fun!

Below is pasted from the website--

Please visit https://meeting.sinc.stonybrook.edu/origamiheaven to join us
from your home.
You can sign in as guest, no password is needed, but your location will be
appreciated. Feel free to chat using the chat window. Microphone access
will not be available to avoid the class from being disrupted. A moderator
will try to answer your questions. Please be patient as this is a new thing
we are trying to figure out. We are very excited that you will be with us
at Origami Heaven.

*Schedule of streamed events:-*
(all times are EDT GMT-4:00)
*Saturday August 4th *
11:30 am Workshop on designing boxes with Christine Edison
1:15 pm Origami Heaven Pin Exchange
5:00pm Origami Fan Paint workshop with Sok Song and Uyen. (You will need
color/paint in addition to paper for this class. )

*Sunday August 5th*
1:00pm Joseph Wu Owl-with Marcio Noguchi
2:00pm "Crane it in"-workshop on connected cranes with Andrew Hans
3:30 pm Stamm/Joyce dragon with Ros Joyce. Amazing variation of Stamm
dragon. (ideal paper to have is florist foil).

*What will the format of the class be?*

We are streaming a regular class with live teacher and students in the
classroom. The teacher will be talking. Every class will have a moderator
who will be sitting near the camera and keeping an eye on the chat window
when you can ask questions by typing. The moderator will also be folding
the model for the camera so the online students can watch the closeup of
the folds. If you miss a step or can't follow for some reason, please don't
be discouraged. We will record these lessons and post it on the website
soon so you can rewind/forward the lesson as many times as you want to
catch up. Since this is so new, we will try our best to accommodate
everyone but everyone must realize that a teachers priority will be the
students who are in the live classroom to not dilute their experience.

You can build on your own experience by inviting some origami friends to
your home and joining the fun. They might also help you with a fold or step
that you might have missed. It makes it all the more fun. Imagine little
classrooms all around the world with a teacher at Origami Heaven!

Thanks again and see you all at Origami Heaven.

My picture made it into the Nashville Scene photos of the Handmade and Bound festival last weekend.

I thought the festival went really well for us and I think we talked to people who are more interested and engaged than the average person we talk to at something like the cultural or the cherry blossom festival. Also, it was indoors, which was nice.  I expect that we will do it again next year.

As I mentioned before, the new paper supply company Origami Paper Monster was considering giving us a discount. The other day they sent me the following:

"We created a special 10% coupon code for Nashville Origami Club members. You can enter NASHVILLE2012 upon checkout at www.origamipapermonster.com. We're also taking paper requests so send us an email if you have any ideas!"

I'm looking forward to this month's meeting on the 21st. We will discuss plans for the Hands On Creativity event that will be the weekend after the club meeting, and we will also be folding a bat, for those interested.

thanks,
malachi

Today was a really great club meeting, with 15 people if I counted correctly.

We discussed the Cherry Blossom Festival which is coming up on March 23rd.  I will be putting in our application in the next week.

My plan is pretty much the same as last year: teach simple to low intermediate models from a small menu.  Suggestions for other models to teach are welcome.

If you want to come and help teach origami during the festival let me know.  I still have plenty of supplies, but I could use some help in a few other areas if you have the time and/or interest.

* We could probably use better signage.  In the past I have just printed out some simple signs but if anyone has a better idea that would be great.

* We could probably use more informative fliers to give out.  In the past I have used the sheet of traditional diagrams with out name and contact info in the corner as well as the mini-cards, but we could certainly have a more robust flier to give out. Either as a single sheet or maybe a square that could be folded into something.  My graphic design and layout skills are nonexistent so help with this would be appreciated.

* Last year we gave away tops and one-minute roses for donations.  I plan to do this again this year to help defray the cost of getting the booth.  If you have any ideas for good models to prepare in advance for that, or if you would be willing to fold some in advance please let me know.

* If you want to pitch in a few dollars that would be handy, too.  I am planning to borrow a tent again and bring my own tables and chairs so the space will cost $50 instead of $150 (which would come with a table and two chairs) to keep costs low.

* On a related note, if you have any chairs (and maybe a table) that you can bring, that would be helpful.  I should be able to bring at least one 6' banquet table, and hopefully two which was adequate last year, but I don't have many chairs and the ones I have are nearing the end of their life.  Also, any compact weights, including something like a gallon jug full of water would also be helpful in securing the tent.

thank you,
malachi

I went to this and it was fun.  They were mostly folding cranes and Yoshizawa butterflies.  I was apparently the only person they didn't already know, and I had apparently met the guy who was teaching in passing at the Handmade and Bound festival last fall.  I also taught a couple of people how to fold sonobe units and they seemed to enjoy it.

Their new studio space is spacious and I might talk with them about experimenting with paper making at some point in the future.

We have completed our annual inventory for the year and quite honestly, we are stuffed to the gills! So, to make room for 9 new papers and 2 new books that were recently ordered, we need to clear some room.

For right now, we have put a bunch of annuals on sale for $10 each - that's 60% off original price! So if you missed or lost any of these year's, now is the time to grab them. also, the table of contents for the annuals are on each product's page.

The new papers we have ordered are papers from Austria this time as we are trying hard to find different and unusual papers to compliment that standard papers you can find most places.

So take a look at http://origamiusa.org/catalog/sale to see what is on sale.

Mike

Yesterday's meeting went really well and there was some discussion about the Cherry Blossom Festival coming up on March 23.  It looks like we will have a logo!  There are still some details to be worked out, but things are coming together.

If you are interested in helping teach at the Cherry Blossom Festival and I haven't talked to you about it already, please let me know.

Lastly, do any of you use Twitter?  I was thinking about setting up a twitter account for the club, but I am not very good at posting things in the moment, so it would probably only be worth doing if one or two of you were interested in also contributing.

thanks,
malachi
