I have been contacted about an opportunity to teach/demonstrate origami next year at Dollywood next year. �During the month of April (and into May a little bit), they have a celebration of cultures event and next year they are considering a focus on Asian culture. �They are looking for opportunities to incorporate cultural elements in addition to the more typical performance arts of music and dance. �

Currently the idea would be to have a group of people who can teach who will each commit to, say, a week there (they should cover expenses). �The person I talked to is also contacting the Crossville group and the home office of Origami USA to see if they might also want to be involved, and to possibly get OUSA to sell materials. �

If any of you are interest in participating or have ideas for ways to incorporate origami (I also suggested an origami art installation of some sort), let me know. �There is, of course, a chance that they may not end up doing this at all, since they are still in the planning stages, but it sounds like it would be fun to me.�

I’ve been told that one of the tactics that the “rockin” campaigns on Kickstarter use is the “Stretch Goal” where we set an additional funding goal (past the already achieved 100%) and promise to give away some special something to all the contributors for helping out with drumming up the additional funding.

As we’re rushing to “grow” the project as fast as possible I could definitely see doing some such thing at some point. Looking at things such as the Crawford retrospective and the French, Japanese, German (and now, perhaps Spanish) translations… the extra funding that we’ve reached will definitely help, but it’s not enough to get us there yet. Each translation looks like it will cost several thousand just to “launch” and the Crawford retrospective will cost a similar amount… so we can really use every cent that comes in.

But I’m thinking, right now, continuing to sitting in a place of profound gratitude for everyone’s generosity and support, I’d rather just send something out to everyone and hope that you all enjoy it and share with all your friends.

So I’m sending out a first piece of what's comping from your contributions. The attached model was taught to me by Meenakshi Mukerji two years ago who challenged me to come up with a straight-forward algorithm for assembly.

I’d been working on the diagrams off and on for a couple of years but had never had the time to complete them. So I took some of the funding and had our photographer take images of me assembling it which were then sent out to the illustrator for rotoscoping. So here it is, photographed just yesterday and amazingly in near complete form.

So please share and send it to all your friends. Let's spread it around let’s see how many copies we can get out there on the net and how fast. Perhaps it will help get the word out to people who haven't heard yet and get more traffic back to our origami campaign.

PS: Some history on the SIP. The model was originally folded and posted by Francesco Mancini in ’04 and was originally “discovered” by Robert Lang in ’99. Meenakshi used a slightly different module from Francesco (30 degrees vs. 22.5) whose module was co-discovered and documented in ’04 by Leong Cheng Chit. Around that time it was also independently discovered and assembled by Jared Needle and Leong Cheng Chit. And this is a draft of the diagrams... comments and corrections are welcome!

*What will the format of the class be?*

We are streaming a regular class with live teacher and students in the
classroom. The teacher will be talking. Every class will have a moderator
who will be sitting near the camera and keeping an eye on the chat window
when you can ask questions by typing. The moderator will also be folding
the model for the camera so the online students can watch the closeup of
the folds. If you miss a step or can't follow for some reason, please don't
be discouraged. We will record these lessons and post it on the website
soon so you can rewind/forward the lesson as many times as you want to
catch up. Since this is so new, we will try our best to accommodate
everyone but everyone must realize that a teachers priority will be the
students who are in the live classroom to not dilute their experience.

You can build on your own experience by inviting some origami friends to
your home and joining the fun. They might also help you with a fold or step
that you might have missed. It makes it all the more fun. Imagine little
classrooms all around the world with a teacher at Origami Heaven!

My picture made it into the Nashville Scene photos of the Handmade and Bound festival last weekend.

I thought the festival went really well for us and I think we talked to people who are more interested and engaged than the average person we talk to at something like the cultural or the cherry blossom festival. Also, it was indoors, which was nice. �I expect that we will do it again next year.�

As I mentioned before, the new paper supply company Origami Paper Monster was considering giving us a discount. The other day they sent me the following:
