The IC-7200 uses a USB connection. But this connection acts as a serial
port and if you look in the Windows device manager, you will see a serial
port comport number for it. Just select this comport number in the N4PY
program and it will work fine.

For MixW and N4PY to work together, In MixW you select the Tentec Pegasus as
the radio type. This causes MixW to not use a comport to talk to the radio
but instead talk to the N4PY program directly through the tentec file
interface. This works well.

Hi,

The IC-7200 apparently doesn't use the usual Icom CI-V interface ... but
sends the CI-V data over a USB connection. Does the N4PY control software
work with this system and control the IC-7200?

My second question relates to the use of MixW and the N4PY control software
working simultaneously on the IC-7200. The control software would control
the operation of the IC-7200 via the USB connection .... while the MixW
software would control the digital data using a digital interface of some
sort to provide the AF data in/out and PTT to the data port on the radio.

Is there some way the control program and MixW program can interface to
exchange information on Frequency and mode which is useful for the built in
logging program in MixW? e.g. When the frequency is changed at the N4PY
control program ... or by actually turning the tuning dial on the radio ...
will it show on the MixW logging program ? .... which would be very convenient.

Thanks,

Jim, VE3CI

Eric -

I was able to download what you want after a little bit of detective work.

In your URL path, the path you need to use is -

http://www.philcovington.com/SDR/N8VB_VCOMDriverBuild226.zip

Misc info:

I used the APPLE Safari browser on PC (or Mac) to quickly figure out the
problem. Using Safari, when your mouse-over the Download button, it shows a
path which is totally the logical place I am sure Phil meant to locate the
driver build-version you seek. However, Build 226 of this driver is indeed not
there.

Using Internet Explorer (I am using latest released version/revision of IE 8 on
XP Pro), I did not see a path when you mouse-over the Download button.

In IE, if you mouse over the "Source and Binary" link, it does show a path in
the IE Status Bar (View menu>Toolbars>Status Bar enabled) but just like the
Safari browser, this path does not work. I could have also seen the path in the
HTML source for this page but I didn't take time to view and read the syntax in
that page-view.

What is located in his Downloads folder are older Versions 101 and 36 of this
driver. But if you just go to the SDR folder-level at
http://www.philcovington.com/SDR/, you will find Build 226 sitting here. I am
sure Phil just made a mistake when he uploaded the Build 226 driver by placing
it one folder-directory up from where he meant it to be. Easy fix when he can
get time but for now you can get it from the SDR folder level. If you have any
questions about getting it from here until Phil moves it into his Download
folder, let me know.

Is there a setting to change the fonts for the buttons or frequency display.

Thanks for this info. on the screen size. I've wanted to make my screen a little larger since I got the software, but didn't want to bother you. I tried 1.5, too large, then I tried your suggestion at 1.2. It works great.

I have been running the n4py program for several years with a variety of radios
and I may have ran across the question/answer but not sure.

Is there an easy way to enlarge the screen display without using the Windows
screen settings? I know that will work but I would like to only have the n4py
display size change. Primarily for the visually impaired. Thanks, Bob, k9foh

Thanks Carl.

I have moved to a different Serial to USB device, outside of Navigator, and the
problem disappeared. So it looks like something is hung in the Navigator
driver.

Is Scheme Faster than C?

    Jonathan Sobel

During my first term of graduate school at Indiana University, I had
the good fortune to be taking the courses Analysis of Algorithms and
Programming Languages at the same time.  One of the assignments in the
Algorithms course was a major term project in which we were to
implement and optimize the Fast Multiplication algorithm.  Fast
Multiplication is a recursive "divide-and-conquer" algorithm for
multiplying two numbers, especially large numbers: hundreds or
thousands of digits.  (It is also used at the hardware level, where
the units are bits, instead of digits.)

Part of our grade for this project was based on how fast the program
ran.  Everyone else immediately started writing in C, and even some in
Assembly.  Of course, they all spent hours upon hours debugging as
they tried to get their highly optimized programs running.  Modify,
re-compile, test; modify, re-compile, test; on and on....

To everyone's amazement and surprise, I started writing in Scheme.  I
had only seen Scheme for the first time 2 months before, in my
Programming Languages course, but its simplicity made it attractive.
Even more importantly, I had discovered the joy of incremental
compilation: make a change or an addition WITHOUT recompiling
everything.  I wonder how many hours I saved....  On the other hand,
the speed of the program was the most important factor, and even
though Chez Scheme (the Scheme implementation most people use here at
IU) is amazingly fast, it can't quite keep up with C in most cases.
So why choose Scheme?

Each call to the "fast-multiply" function produces three recursive
calls to "fast-multiply" (or to a simple "multiply" routine, once you
reach small enough numbers).  What I noticed was that each of those
three recursive calls had nearly the same control context.  In a
simple-minded implementation in C, that context would be saved and
restored three times, being destroyed after the return of each call.
I thought to myself: If only I had explicit control over the flow of
my program, I could speed it up significantly by creating that context
only once and using it three times, destroying it only after the
return of the third recursive call.  Function calls are so costly!
But I would never want to attempt such a thing from scratch in C.

What I had been learning in my Programming Language course, however,
was that I really could manage my own control flow if I wanted.
Furthermore, I could start with a simpler, more naive program and
basically DERIVE the sophisticated one through a series of
correctness-preserving program transformations.  This is where Scheme
really won.  Because of its extremely algorithmic---almost
mathematical---nature, Scheme can be easily manipulated in a sort of
algebraic style.  One can follow a series of rewrite rules (just about
blindly) to transform a program into another form with some desirable
property.  This was exactly what I needed.

I started by implementing the algorithm very directly, following the
steps given in our Analysis of Algorithms textbook line by line.  (I
definitely did NOT spend much time debugging in this phase.)  Then I
converted the program to a continuation passing style.  Next I made
the continuations into explicit record structures, rather than Scheme
procedures.  Finally, I transformed all the procedures to pass
information via registers, instead of calling each other with
arguments.  At this stage, a procedure call is merely a simple "goto,"
quite a cheap operation.  I completed the entire transformation in a
few hours.  (With what I know now, I could have transformed it even
further, removing all traces of heap allocation.)

With the Scheme program in its final form, it was a simple matter to
translate it into C.  The C program contained no function calls
whatsoever; I really did use "goto."  I had never had the courage to
use a "goto" in C before; it was just too dangerous a tool.  It was
kind of fun to use them now, knowing that I was completely safe in
doing so.  That was the amazing part: I had PRODUCED a program that I
could not have WRITTEN, and would not have wanted to write directly,
for that matter.

Of course, you might be asking yourself, as I was, "But does it run
fast?"  Speed was, after all, my main goal.  The answer is a very
resounding "Yes!"  Out of a class of about 15 students, only one
person beat me (and only barely), and he wrote significant portions of
his program directly in Assembly Language.  The next fastest after me
took nearly twice as long to do the same work.

Now I know of several more transformations which I could have applied
to my Scheme program before I translated it into C, which would have
put mine in first place.  A runtime profile of my program revealed
that the majority of time was spent in the C routines "malloc" and
"free."  I could have eliminated that heap usage by transforming my
program into a form in which all data allocation and control
management would have been completely stack-based, with an explicitly
managed stack.  I could have pushed onto the stack exactly that
control information which I deemed necessary.  There were places where
I could have modified the existing stack record, rather than popping
it off and creating a (similar) new one in its place.  These
transformations were also presented in my Programming Languages
course.  Unfortunately, at the time that I did my Algorithms project,
I did not yet grasp them well enough to use them well.

What I learned most from this experience was the importance of a
structured, systematic approach to programming.  I have found that is
it always better to write a simple, direct program to solve a problem,
having become convinced through experience that radical structural
transformations can come later; and I can depend on those
transformations to preserve the original semantics of my program.  I
have also learned that I can be free to focus on the NATURE of
whatever problem I am trying to solve, rather than on how "efficient"
my solution is.  Real efficiency comes from elegant solutions, not
optimized programs.  Optimization is always just a few
correctness-preserving transformations away.

This sounds like the program is hung in the navigator driver waiting for a
serial port read to complete. I think it is a bug in the navigator serial
port driver The reason I think the program is hung in the driver software
is because task manager cannot stop the program.

I am using N4PY software to control my Ten-Tec Orion through a US Interface
Navigator.

If I attempt to turn off the N4PY software
without the Orion powered it WILL NOT shut down.

If I go to the Window Task
Manager and try END TASK it still will not close.

There are two ways I
can close the software:
Turn on the
Orion and close the software, or
Unplug the USB cable
to the Navigator
interface.
Both methods seem
rather brute force.

Any suggestions as
to what might be the issue??

Thanks!

I have a user that is having difficulty interfacing MixW with N4PY. He has
tried both the tentec file interface and also the third party logging
program THP port interface. His symptom is identical with both interfaces.
If he changes a frequency in MixW, it gets sent to N4PY and also the radio
and all is well. But if he changes the frequency directly on the radio,
N4PY picks up the change and sends it to MixW. MixW acknowledges receiving
the new frequency but does not update its display. Is there some setting in
MixW that needs to be set for the MixW frequency display to update? I don't
have MixW to check this out myself.

thanks for the suggestion Carl, but i have let the software search and have
manualy connected each port (even though I knew what port it should have been!)
I have also set and set auto-baud- still with no results.

It is possible to have a bad CT-17? Is there a way to confirm that?

CL-V level converters are a new thing for me. No matter what settings I use
I can't seem to get anyone's software to acknowledge my IC-7000 through the
CT-17 interface. I pluged the mini cable into the front of the CT-17 and
into the back of the radio, the big RS232 through an adapter to a DB9 and
into the computer com port, set the baud to 19200 (and 1200 and 9600) N 8-1
and N 8-2. I have tried auto select for the com ports and auto select for
baud- still nothing. Is there another user out there who would like to
share their successful settings with me? I'm really frustrated! Thanks de
