Hello Sam,

Here are the titles of Paul Devereux' best known books:

Earth lights. Turnstone Press Ltd., 1982
Earth Lights Revelation, Blandford Press, 1989

You can find an outline of Paul Devereux' ideas at below URL. It's a
lecture script entitled "EARTH LIGHTS AND THE RE-INVENTION OF UFOLOGY" for
presentation to the British UFO Research Association (BUFORA) in 1997.

     http://www.acemake.com/PaulDevereux/earthlights.html

About the Dover lights: Where is Dover? Have you seen the lights yourself?

Best regards,

Hello Everybody,

I have been receiving your group email. Very interesting. I am a
filmmaker in Mathias, WV and have a production in the works called "The
Lights." I had based the screenplay on a couple stories I had heard about
strange lights in the area where I live (Lost River Valley area of
Northeastern West Virginia). Since I started my film not only have I been
contacted by quite a few people who have told me about unexplained phenomena
they have seen, but I finally got to see some lights myself. I am not sure
if they are the same thing as the "earth lights" mentioned by Sam. I
welcome you all to visit my website at www.wv-thelights.com

Please take a look in particular at the press releases and the Forum page.
In fact, I would welcome you to add some comments to the Forum page--either
under one of the topics already listed, or by starting a new discussion
topic.

Keep looking up.

Ray Schmitt

Did she see the orbs in the sky when she took the photograph?
Or do they just show up on the photo?

Possibly. We have a simlilar impression, though I'd formulate it
differently: We have the impression that some people are able to see
things in the sky which others can't. You could call it a special talent.
The British UFO researcher Albert Budden has described how such a talent
could develop.

Twickel Watch is using scientific methods to get answers to questions. So
far we haven't come across evidence that orbs or light phenomena are
energies left by someone deseased. Do you know the Paul Devereux' books
about earth lights? He has interesting ideas about the cause of so called
earth lights.

Thanks. I have not personally but have been receiving some information
involving orbs of light that are believed to be energy left by the deceased.

Thanks,

Thank you very much, Frits. This may not be they same type of orb, and I
should have given more information, but I am very interested in this type of
phenomena.

I am a member of MUFON and have been since shortly after my son and I had a
UFO fly directly overhead during the early seventies while on a duck hunt.
This craft was less than five hundred feet away and absolutely noiseless. I
have been a believer ever since.

My son sent an e-mail about the orbs. He has an aquaintance who has had orbs
show up in photos of him taken by his wife. They never appear in photos of
his wife. I contacted a member of MUFON who has had a lot of paranormal
experience and she says some people are orb attractors and some are not. She
also told me that this type orb is believed to be energy left by someone
deceased. I asked her if old home places were good spots to try photographing
orbs. She said yes but old graveyards are better and the best luck she has
heard of was the scene of an auto accident where people are killed but she
could not bring herself to do this. They seem to show up best where there was
a violent death. I have no experience in this but I do know of a few old
homesites and cemetaries so I may give it a try. This kind of stuff
fascinates me and I don't disbelieve anything anymore.

Thanks,

Carroll

Hello Carroll,

This is not a precise answer to your question, but I think it may be
relevant.

In the fall of 1997, a number unidentified lights were sighted over a
rural area called "Twickel" in the east of the Netherlands. During this
"flap" the UFO Working Group Netherlands decided to established a study
group called Twickel Watch, of which I'm an investigator. Twickel Watch is
still active and is trying to find a satisfactory explanation for these
unidentified aerial light phenomena.

One of the eyewitnesses of the Twickel Lights is a police officer, who
became a member/observer of Twickel Watch. His name is I.T.

IT patrols the Twickel area on a daily basis. He has had a number of
sightings of light phenomena (LP), while on patrol in the Twickel area.
During night-time operations against poaching he uses a night vision
monocular. Note: this is not an infrared viewer, but an opto-electronic
device that works as an image intensifier. Night vision monoculars are
also widely in use by the military and are known for the greenish images
they produce.

One night IT noticed, with the naked eye, a bright white, motionless, oval
shaped LP in the sky. He estimated that the distance between him and the
LP was four to five kilometers. After some seconds the LP suddenly went
out and wasn't visible anymore. Out of curiosity he took his night vision
monocular and trained it on the region in the sky where the LP had gone
out. To his astonishment the oval phenomenon appeared to be still there,
being visible only with the night vision monocular. After some seconds the
phenomenon suddenly illuminated, becoming bright white, and visible with
the naked eye again. Shortly after that, it's color changed into a very
deep red, and the LP shot straight up. According to IT, it was out of
sight within a second.

IT has had several other sightings of this kind. His observations seem
to indicate that LP, sighted from some distance, can sometimes change
into non- or dim-luminous phenomena and reverse.

Best wishes,

Hello Ghost Girl, My name is Sam Wright, I live in Russellville, Arkansas.
We have near here, some 25 miles North, what is called the Dover Lights.
The Park service has built an overlook on the edge of a mountain overlooking
a valley some several hundred feet deep with a creek running through it.
After dark on most nights, the lights are visible, some small, some large,
some moving, and some stationary. Some have heard indian chants with the
sound of Tom-toms. More than a few have claimed that they have been chased
by the lights. (I don't drink, so I would not know about that).
The story is that when the Spanish soldiers were here in the 16th century
looking for precious metals, they forced the local indians to dig silver.
The indians rebeled and killed the Spanish soldiers. The indian legend says
that the lights are the result of starlight reflecting off of the silver
that remains in the ground.
There are a number of people coming this Saturday from Memphis, TN and some
from St Louis, MO. If you don't mind, I'll send you an update on what
happens. Sam Wright

Hello Gregory,

The lights in question have been observed at approx. a few feet to approx. 40 ft
max. off the ground. We have observed them at this location since April 2000.
Obviously these are not planets, (stargazing is a hobby of mine) nor are they
the result of swamp/marsh gas. Thanks for the suggestion though... :)

It sounds very much like a bright planet or star 'scintillating' due to
atmospheric turbulence. Where there any bright planets/stars in the vicinity?
Mars is at opposition at the moment, and sounds like a good candidate. It may
also have been an effect due to a atmospheric temperature inversion-I have
seen
this condition used quite reasonably to explain quite a few 'UFO' sightings in
   Australia.

Hi Everyone,

I am a filmmaker in Mathias, WV currently in post-production on a sci-fi
film called "The Lights." The film is based on a couple of stories I had
heard about mysterious lights in our neck of the woods. Since we
developed a website to publicize the film as we were working on it
(www.wv-thelights.com), many people have started contacting me about various
lights they have been seeing in this area (Lost River Valley, Hardy County,
West Virginia). Last week I took up an offer from one nearby person to see
some lights that they had been seeing off their deck for about one week.
Below is my account and that of another interested spectator who I asked to
join me. Check out the Forum page on our website and feel free to add
comments.

Thanks,

Ray Schmitt

Description of Lights

I went up to (deleted) home on Monday evening, June 18, 2001, at 9:00 PM
after reading their e-mail message of June 17, 2001 concerning seeing
"strange blue lights." The (deleted) home is .4 miles up a mountain off
Jenkins Hollow Road, in Mathias, WV. The dirt road winds its way through
woods until it reaches their home. They cut down about 100 feet of trees on
the hillside sloping down from their small yard to give them a view of the
distant mountain range. The view is toward the east (North Mountain) and
WV/VA line. They explained to me what they had been seeing and pointed out
the different directions the lights seem to emanate from as we stood on
their outside deck waiting for it to get darker.

The skies that night were crystal clear without any moon. Since my night
vision is poor I was initially unable to see the lights they were pointing
out. However, I got my 7 x 35 mm Sears binoculars out of my truck and went
back up on the deck.

Around 9:30 PM just as they had stated, we started seeing lights. The
darker it got, the more lights I began to see. They were small, but very
bright, and in the nearby woods and above the tree tops. They looked white
to me but the (deleted) reported also seeing blue and red lights. I was
able to watch them through my binoculars. They would be still and then
shoot about very quickly horizontally like Humming Birds through the nearby
trees and above the tree tops. The lights seemed to pulsate slightly as
they moved about. Their movement was extremely quick and they had no
difficulty navigating through the trees. Many of the lights followed the
path of the driveway leading up the hill.

Around 9:45 (deleted) and their son arrived. They, too, began seeing the
lights move about in the wooded area. As the night progressed the lights
became more numerous and would come closer to the house. Some were
practically right in front of us--perhaps 100 feet away. Others would come
near the satellite dish and then dart about. It was quite incredible. It
should be noted that we saw several of these same lights an estimated 2-3
miles away against the backdrop of North Mountain. These distant lights
seemed as bright and clear as the lights in front of us.

After observing this for about 20 minutes we started looking farther into
the distance, including the horizon over North Mountain and upwards in the
sky. We started watching a bright light move high across the sky from right
to left (south to north) . It was not like the small lights we were
watching dart about through the woods in front of the house. This light was
moving northward relatively slow and very high in the sky. With my
binoculars I watched the object move across the sky for about two minutes.
The tail end of the light seemed to "wobble" as it traveled. Others were
watching the same movement with their naked eyes.

I saw another large glowing round object to the left (north). It appeared
just above the mountain ridge and changed in color from a white light to
orange. It dropped down out of sight behind North Mountain and then
reappeared. We all were watching it as it started to go straight up
seemingly changing color at the same time before it disappeared.

Note: While the others in our party described the lights as being both
white and blue, and even changing to red, they appeared white to me. This
may be because of my poor night vision or because I was looking through
binoculars. If a person were not paying careful attention he or she might
think the lights they were seeing "in the corner of their eyes" were
fireflies. But after careful watching, the numerous lights were to big and
moved to quickly to be fire flies. We also saw blue, red and white blinking
lights moving across the sky but knew that they were airplanes since we
could also hear the jet engines. The lights that we witnessed did not make
any sound.

Ray,
Thank you for sharing that extraordinary experience last night at the
(deleted) Homestead. Here is my recollection of the experience.
Arrived at 9:45 PM
Within the first 5 minutes of our arrival we witnessed the strange blue
lights (Some call these Ghost Lights) zigging and zagging atop the tree line
and on the ridges of the mountains. We thought them to be fireflies at first
but they were much too bright and traveled too fast.
We also saw several bright orange lights that fascinated me even further.
The first orange light (Ray pointed out over the ridge of North Mountain)
began to move from right to left and seemed to duck below the mountain top.
A short few minutes later it appeared and started climbing upwards (about 2
o'clock in direction) in an angle then all of a sudden transformed into 4
lights.
The second orange light came from behind the house and was traveling toward
North Mountain at a pretty good speed considering the altitude it was at. It
would zig and zag kind of like it was jumping up or down in altitude across
the sky then suddenly disappeared. (example
____--------______---------________----------)
The 3rd orange light came from behind North Mountain and got brighter as it
climbed straight up and all of a sudden just vanished.
I have no explanation of what it was that we witnessed. I returned home and
did witness a few blue lights in Middle Cove but, no where near the quantity
witnessed at the (deleted) residence.

It sounds very much like a bright planet or star 'scintillating' due to
atmospheric turbulence. Where there any bright planets/stars in the vicinity?
Mars is at opposition at the moment, and sounds like a good candidate. It may
also have been an effect due to a atmospheric temperature inversion-I have seen
this condition used quite reasonably to explain quite a few 'UFO' sightings in
Australia.

Hi Sean and List,

How are you doing Sean? Will be checking out your updates shortly. We've gotten
some excellent video footage out here in Ontario Canada along with some great
pics. I'm still going through these and will let you know when they are online.
The videos were shot in both regular mode and night vision using zoom. Colours
observed were green, white, amber, and red. The lights appeared to split and
reform both with the naked eye and optical devices. Any questions? Speculation?
I'd like to get out there with a spectrometer in the near future. Have also been
thinking of proposing a possible joint venture with a local university if I can
garner some interest in this research. Some of the "toys" I'd love to have on
hand do not come cheaply as I am sure you are quite aware.

Any thoughts on Dr. Walker's P.P.E work?

Take good care and we'll keep in touch,
Sue

anybody out there ever see a wave, a very large wave

This happened on just after crossing I-10, where

Subject: Earth Lights Stuff
sean@...

Hi Everyone,
I'd like to welcome all new members to the group (we now total
five...), and extend my thanks to you all for your interest. Just to
prove that this mailing list is for discussion as well as site
updates, I'm posting a few ideas about the earth light phenomenon that
I've had recently...

Firstly, as usual there has been no major updates that I'm aware of in
the field of Earth Light research, just as there isn't every year
(although I admit I don't keep my ear to the ground as much as I used
to). Also, there isn't much in the way of new Web sites devoted to the
phenomenon, although I have stumbled across a couple of updates on our
old favourites: Ghosts.org and Project Hessdalen. Still, I can't help
but feel that the field of earth light research is isolated due to the
obscurity of the events, and the lack of promotion or investigation of
the genre. I'm quite surprised that the site has got over 7000 hits
now, given that I rarely see it mentioned elsewhere.

Anyway, enough moaning, and on to the topic at hand: ALP. The most
major development that I have been cogitating on is the fact that most
of the major American sites center on railroad tracks: and when those
tracks are removed, the lights disappear too. This has happened too
many times (Maco, Crossett, to name a couple) to be of mere
coincidence, and leads me to conclude that the railways either a)
attract ALP, or b) propagate it. Maybe they do both. Lately, theories
and studies of earth lights have all come to the same "electromagnetic
plasma generated by the earth" conclusions. If this is indeed the
case, then we might be able to work out what role the tracks have in
transmitting the electricity from the ground into an electromagnetic
loop of plasma in the atmosphere.

The ground is fairly alive with electricity anyway, and small tectonic
strains can have large effects: no problem there. So let's say that
the electricity gets transmitted to the surface. It now needs to leap
out into the air and form a ball. This seems highly unlikely, which is
where I believe the railroad tracks come in...

If the tracks themselves become electrified, it may be possible for a
spark to somehow bridge the gap between them: if the conditions are
just perfect. This might not even be visible, only in the form of a
potential difference being exchanged by the tracks themselves... now,
if this can sufficiently ionise the air around the tracks, then this
energy might somehow get caught, being fed by the tracks, and
eventually form a ball of glowing plasma that can break free and
wander about.

Problems with this theory? Well, that's a big gap to cross, so the
potential difference would need to be *huge*... I think it's something
like 1000V per metre, so call it something like 2000V. However, I
remember from my college days that even a mere Van De Graff generator
can get up to 100,000 volts on a dry day. Maybe the ground could
generate such voltages? The current would not have to be all that
strong. If there is an unusually still piece of air above the tracks,
it might be able to form both the connection for the electricity, and
the container for the glowing plasma. The conditions needed to make
such an event happen would be highly exceptional: as mirrored by the
fact that the lights are so rare.

Well, I'm clutching at straws a bit here, I admit, but these lights
must be formed *somehow*, and I'm sure that the railroad tracks have
some part in that. The microclimate around the lights seems to be
inextricably linked to their characteristics, and that is a very
important line of investigation for us to pursue.

Anyway, I'll probably be posting some of this to the site later (most
likely under "theories") because there are more people looking at the
site than there are on this list :-)

A few "mysterylights.com" changes...

I added a note about how to report a sighting to us, because I get a lot of
sightings, and only a few have any great detail in them. Plus there were a
few other things I wanted to point out, such as privacy policies etc.:
http://www.mysterylights.com/other/report/

I changed the "sub-title" of the site from "The Earth Lights Resource at
http://www.mysterylights.com/" to "The Earth Light - Ghost Light - and
Spooklight Resource", to provide a more accurate description.

A added a copyright statement to
http://www.mysterylights.com/policies/copyright/ due to some unfortunate
plagarism that I had seen elsewhere. See also our new acceptable use guide
at http://www.mysterylights.com/policies/acceptableuse/ It also contains
instructions about linking to the site (i.e. you don't have to ask for
permission any more!).

I chopped out some of the rubbish from the homepage at
http://www.mysterylights.com/ to make it a bit easier to follow.

I updated http://www.mysterylights.com/cases/ and
http://www.mysterylights.com/links/ to contain a decent link I found
pertaining to the Crossett Light, AR.

I also did some other minor style cleanups, that I won't bore you with
here, but that should make the site a little bit more accessible, and
perhaps quicker to download.

Hey, great! As I've said before, I give you full permission to link to any

can also quote stuff if you want (with the relevant information).

Yes. Earth lights aren't the most popular subject in the world, simply
because not many people know about them, only a handful of experts. I would
much rather see this list as a "discussion forum for ALP" than an "updates
list for mysterylights.com", but there's no reason why it can't be both.

It is my hope that in the future there will be much more discussion about
this topic, and we shall be looked upon as "pioneers of the genre" :-)

Hi Sean,

I should have specified. What I meant is add the url of the main page
for this discussion group to our resources page in order to allow any
of our guests who may want to join this list in order to receive your
updates or discuss this type of phenomena with others who share an
interest in it.

By promote I meant I would mention this discussion group and provide
a link for those who may be interested in joining on some of the
other groups I'm on.

I have not to date found any other discussion groups specific to this
topic of which we are so heavily involved. At one time I considered
starting one, however due to time constraints I never got around to
it..:)

Hope this clarifies..:)

Er.. I'm not sure if you mean that you want to link to this egroup in order
to promote my site, or use this group to promote your site, or whatever.
Basically, you don't really need to ask me for permission to link to any of
my pages: you have my full permission to link to anything I publish... but
if you want an "updates" egroup for your site, why don't you just sign up
for one: http://www.egroups.com/ It took me all of about 5-10 minutes to

Just a quick note to record that I've cleaned up the site quite a bit in
the last few days. The coding on the front page
http://www.mysterylights.com/ is much improved. I had intended it to be
XHTML Basic for a while, but I couldn't use scripts, so I gave in. At least
it is valid XHTML 1.0 Strict now.
I got rid of the large image on the front page as well, so the site should
be a little bit more accessible. I tweaked some of the CSS as well, like
changing px's to em's. I also changed some of the text to make it more
readable and better structured. More updates coming soon.

That is one of the problems with ALP research - most researcers are
isolated due to the rarity of the subject. I'm sure that even I have only
come across 1-10% of the total ALP sites there are out there.
Case-in-point: your site. It's excellent, but I had never seen it until Sue
contacted me and told me about it.

Research carries on my end as well, but I am not fortunate enough to live
as close to an ALP area of interest as you do, so when you do your
investigations, think of me! I mainly collect and collate data from the
Web, and occasionally I get emails about ALP as well, which is quite a
highlight.

You have a wonderful wealth of information on the mystery lights
