About the National Museum, Lagos

The National Museum Lagos is one of the 34 Museums operated by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM). The NCMM is an agency of Federal Republic of Nigeria with statutory functions of collecting, preserving, conserving, researching and exhibiting the cultural and natural heritage of Nigeria for the information and enjoyment of the public. These museums are located in Nigeria’s 36 states however there is not a museum in the Federal Capital of Abuja.

The Museum in Lagos was opened to the public in March 1957 and since then has continued to play a leading role in the provision of museum services to individuals as well as private and corporate entities using potentials inherent in culture to act as catalyst for national development, peace and unity.

The National Museum Lagos is one of the NCMM’s best Museums holding a comprehensive collection of over 70% of the Commission’s objects for the use of scholars, researchers, other Museums and cultural organizations and schools. The national collection has been noted by international museum scholars as being, “the most important collection of African art in Africa.” Objects from the Museum are often included in international exhibitions and seen by millions around the world.
